    Re: Soy

Soy: soy is a legume and according to Induction Rule # 4 in Chapter 11, "Foods that combine proteina nd carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes are not permitted at this time." So soy is not allowed during Induction phase per the Induction rules, whether it's ground up soybeans (soy flour), soybeans ground into a fine paste (soy "butter"), fresh soybeans (edamame), dried roasted/fried soybeans (soy nuts).

The only soy product that is acceptable is tofu according to the Cheese footnote.

The Atkins products---There were two sides to the Atkins empire: the medical clinic and the business. The business was initially the books. That was expanded to include vitamin supplements. Eventually that was expanded further to include low carb food products. When Atkins was really big a few years ago, Atkins Nutritionals was selling everything from the bars and shakes to muffins, fudge, cheesecakes, etc. They said these products were to make the diet "easier" to do. In reality, it only had the "Snackwell" effect---that is people ate this stuff, thinking it would help promote or not endanger their weight loss, and they didn't lose weight or they didn't lose weight as easily.

The company ended up down-sizing the products, removing many things, including the vitamin supplements. But they still published books that promoted the company products.

If you want to eat WASA rye crackers or Oatmeal for Induction, like the website says you can, it's up to you. But just know that in the collective experience of ADBB, we have found that following the Rules in the book optimizes weight loss.

      Re: Soy

Jeannine, if you are wanting pancakes there are some induction-legal recipes around that dont contain soy flour!

Here is one that RichT posted a while back
      Recipe for pancakes -

      3 Large eggs
3 Tablespoons of Cream cheese (Philadelphia for example)
      a pinch of nutmeg
      a pinch of cinnamon.

Whisk all together and it gives you a batter completely induction friendly...... then cook the same as you would normally. THey are lovely with a little splenda sprinkled over them
      And from donna (D14965)
      Pancakes

      2 extra large eggs
      1/4 cup whipping cream
      1 pack splenda
      dash of cinnamon

Beat this all together ... I also add a teaspoon of psyllium husk for fibre and it improves the texture of the pancakes
Fry in melted butter as you would normal pancakes..
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

        Re: Soy

Ugh. I had been using the website since I moved to Houston because it was really helpful in providing recipes that were low-carb but still interesting. It got me rolling in thinking about food differently. It's very frustrating to find out that it's an unreliable source.

I'm on Day 10 of Induction. On four days, I ate flax because I thought it was legal. On four days, and not the same four days, I ate soya flour or soy nut butter. I weighed myself this morning, and I've lost 8 of my intended 31 lbs. I think I'm doing alright. I'm ticked off that I've worked so hard to stay straight on this, only to find that I've been screwing it up, but I've gotten good results and don't think I need to restart. I don't consider it cheating. But it still sticks in my craw. Grrrrrrr.

Anyhow, thanks all for the input. As far as the book contradicting itself...I think it's like anything. Common sense and good judgement have to kick in at some point. If the book says *no legumes* but there's a recipe in Induction that includes soya flour, I would go with *no legumes*.

the best way that anyone can do induction is to only eat from the acceptable foods list,

your loss is fantastic for what you have to lose, great work!

            Re: Soy

I think the recipe section was modified or added by Atkins Nutritionals...to get you to buy their products! I ignore the recipes, as most of them have frankenfood ingredients.

              Re: Soy

He does list the zuchini bread - same as he has the strawberry shake replacement. In the 1997 version none of this stuff was listed. It was written right when they started carrying all this new stuff that Dr Atkins added these recipes and such himself because he (as stated) took notice of people needing "fast food".

Personally I would hold back on some of the "processed foods" and quick foods. There are so many other things you can cook with for the 14-days.

                Re: Soy

another thing to bear in mind is that the available lowcarb products that were around before 2002 were a lot different than what is available now. Some 'oldtimers' have posted in the past that the ingredients in many instances bear little relation now to what they were when Dr Atkins wrote his books.
