  • Day 3 Extreme Nausea! Help

I was really excited about trying Atkins.
I have been living off carbs most of my life.
The first day was no problem. I felt full and didn't crave my usually sweets.
The second day was a little strange. I didn't feel very hungry. Which is really strange. Usually I am always hungry. So I was happy.
The third day. I felt very nauseated and dreaded eating eggs or chicken or beef or even cheese! It was strange.
So the fourth day I quit. Now it's the 6th day and I still can't bring myself to eat eggs or chicken, etc....! I actually got some medicine for my nausea.
It's really strange, because I never feel nauseated or dread meat, cheese,or eggs.
Maybe I will wait and try again in a few weeks. What do you think?

    What else did you eat?

Did you have your 3 cups of vegetables along with the meat, cheese and eggs?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Yes, I had about 3 cups of veggies. And I have always had about 2.5 liters or more of water per day.

I just stir fried some veggies for breakfast and had a salad for lunch and dinner along with all the meat, cheese and eggs.

      Thanks for your reply!

Maybe I should start more slowly. Maybe slowly cut out the carbs for 2 weeks and then do induction. Maybe because I usually eat high carb food and little meat.

I think you need to just get through the nausea. It's probably your system adjusting - you say you 'lived off carbs', so it's really quite a change - and you feeling extreme loss of appetite.

On the other hand it might be unrelated to Atkins, and just be a tummy bug, so it might not even recur.

I'd start again as soon as the nausea passes, but this time work through a day or so of nausea if it occurs again.

Re: Day 3 Extreme Nausea! Help

Hi Miss! I think a few things could help. I've tried Atkins before and felt TERRIBLE around Day 3-4 but I know why. And this time around, not at all

              01. I'd post your menu in the "Review My Menu" section. Be as specific as possible. Such as "breakfast: this and this, this measured out amount" etc. Sometimes not getting enough of certain things can aid in the sick feeling.

              02. Check out the menu section. I can't eat eggs-meat-cheese nonstop. Most of us here can't. When they are that straight forward and uneventful, even the best of us can get bored QUICK. I do things like sausage quiche muffins, fried eggs (scrambled make me want to vomit) and bacon, etc. Some folks don't even use eggs. This morning I had a chicken salad instead. Just lettuce, chicken and dressing. For dinner, I've had spaghetti squash "noodles" with alfredo sauce, cheesecake pancakes, cheeseburger quiches, garlic butter roast, garlic butter shrimp, herb green beans. Last night Kristi had fake mashed potatos.

Really for me, the key to doing this was trying recipes. If I have it in my head all I'm eating is 2 bacon. 2 scrambled eggs. 1 piece of cheese. Some broccoli. A basic boring salad. Beef for dinner... I would probably feel blah about it as well.

Re: Day 3 Extreme Nausea! Help

Okay I got so caught up in talking food.. DUH!

Be sure to check the threads on "Induction Flu". Your body runs on carbs for fuel right now. As your body runs out of these stored carbs (typically day 3, 4 or 5) and has to switch over to burning your fat for fuel, you may feel extremely terrible.

You might feel sluggish, sleepy, headache-y, weak, nauseous, dizzy, etc. Its because your body is sort of going "WHAT NOW!?!" as it switches over to the other source of fuel. Once it picks up burning fat for fuel, you feel like a human again =)

Also, when you top the fact that your body might have serious food addictions that you weren't even aware of (often you see folks in Induction craving things they never thought they would and not missing the things they were sure they couldn't live without), your body does go through physical withdrawl symptoms as well.

Thanks for the advice. Your success inspires me to try again.
I am going to try to get through the adjustment phase.
I think induction is just a shock to my system.

                      To MrsBrittney,
Thank you for all your ideas. I read you are trying it for your 2nd time. I wish you the best of luck this time around. It's good to know that others have felt terrible during induction. (not that I wish that on anyone)
The thing is I am living in Korea. I can't find a whole lot of things here. I found all the basics veggies, meat, poultry, butter, cheese, spices etc. But, I can't find low carb sauces, etc. I can't afford to have things shipped across the world. I found some gravy and some thousand Island dressing. That's about as exciting as it gets. I can't find low carb flour, or splenda or even whipping cream...etc.
But, I will definately do as you suggested.
I will check out the recipes.
I think I should be able to use butter, oil and spices to jazz it up a little.
I didn't know about induction flu. I think my body was definately going through withdrawl. I really think I have a sugar addiction.

Thanks and good luck to you.

I can't find low carb sauces, etc
I have not bought any special low carb products, very few available here in Ireland anyway. It doesn't make any difference. Mostly Atkins is built around eating fresh natural foods, so "veggies, meat, poultry, butter, cheese, spices etc" are just what you need! I don't know if there is nutritional information on packages in Korea, but if there is, just get obsessive about reading them. There are lots of 'normal' foods that are low carb - though you won't as a rule find them in the "healthy choice" displays!!

Induction flu is not nice - I felt shocking for a few days. But if you try to think of it as proof that the new way you are eating is working, and bear in mind that you will soon not just adjust but feel fantastic, you can kinda make feeling bad feel good, if you know what I mean.

The truth is, I think deep down I want to keep it simple.
I am going to work with what I got. Your right!
I am going to work through it now that I know about induction flu.
Thank you so much for your suggestions.
                          Congradulations on your weightloss!! Wonderful!
I am going to start this week or next week. (on vacation now so I think I should enjoy it)

Unfortunately, I likely won't be able to find the ingredients to make your sauces.
After reading more on the site I am convinced that after the first week into it I should be able to enjoy eating an Atkins diet.
I prey to God I enjoy the food.
