  • newbie needs serious help!

hi, i'm new here, and i really need some advice!!

so i decided to start atkins a couple weeks ago, i read the book and everything..and i was super motivated. here is my problem, i did induction for a few days..loved it, and then for some reason i cheated on the third day and decided to start over. this has happened three times already...i'll go 3-4 days on induction, then i'll give into a craving and go off induction for a day. each time gets more difficult for me mentally.

i really really want this, but for some reason my subconscious must not. any tips to finally getting over my 4 day slump? oh yeah, i'm living with my parents right now, so there's no way in heck i'll be able to clean out the pantry and fridge to make it atkins friendly.

any tips would be awesome, because i would love for tomorrow to be the last time i have to start over! i just need a kick in the butt or something.

I am sure more people will have thoughts on this. Here are mine

*Identify what food tempts you and have your family hide it.
*Identify what situation makes you cheat and mix things up so you don't get into that situation
*Have plenty of a favourity legal treat around so that if temptation hits you you can have it instead (I have to do this one a lot )
    * Drink plenty of water
    * Have a current picture of you on hand so that if you get into the temptation again you take it out and look at it and remind yourself what you are trying to shed
    * Start keeping your stats or a journal here to help you keep accountable
    * Don't start over when you fail. Continue! We all trip up. That does not mean we start at 0, we just pick ourself up and continue (that way you will not have to face Day 3 again.

Here's one of my favorite sayings...

"Nothing tastes as good as thin feels".

The next time you are tempted to cheat, think about this and how much you want to be a more thin and happy person. If you know that you're going to beat yourself up over cheating, why do it? Don't give in to the temptation and you'll feel so much better about yourself. Remember, Atkins is a way of life, not just a way of eating. You obviously want to lose the weight because you keep starting over...

      You can do this.

          Re: newbie needs serious help!

I have the same problems. One thing I can tell you is,,,,,be prepared!! Always, always have your meals ready for you at anytime. This is key for me. That way you will always have something ready to eat incase you come down with cravings. Now my question is,,,what do you cheat on? Sweets or meals? If you cheat on sweets, I would suggest getting the recipe for Pumpkin treat or the mock danish on this web site and keep the ingrediants on hand, so that if you run into a sweet tooth craving, you can make these up in minutes. I have been struggling over sweets (skittles) myself. I just yesterday bought all of the stuff for the pumpkin treat and the mock danish, just incase I have an urge that I can't control at that time. Now I know we are supposed to kill the sweet tooth, but I would rather eat a sweet legal treat than something that isn't legal and bad for me. I take it day by day, sometimes hour by hour.

I would definately talk to some of the mods and experts on here about some vitamins and supplements that you can take as well.

If you find yourself craving illegal food on the 3 and 4 day of induction, make sure you have something from the acceptable food list of induction, by your side at all times. Don't let yourself get hungry!!

          Good luck!!

Could you separate things in the pantry/fridge, at least temporarily until you get through a clean induction? Perhaps put atkins-friendly food on the eye level shelf and everything else on the rest of the pantry shelves. That way it'd be far less tempting to grab the other stuff. Once you get through induction, hopefully those cravings will have subsided.

Since this is an on-going problem...here's my advice. Sit down and write out what happened on those occassions that caused you to slide backwards. Write out what you will do differently this time around when those obstacles pop back into your life. If you have it written out and are conscious of what you'll do...it is easier to change the way you react. Come here to talk it over before you eat out of control. Take a walk. Write in your journal. Exercise. Drink water instead. Dance. Read. Whatever it takes to stop you from reaching for food for emotional support. Once you do get into the habit of doing rather than eating when you are stressed or unhappy...it gets easier. This has helped me, I hope it can be of help to you too.

It took me a few stutter- starts before I did a cheat free day. I think you'll be fine. Just be very conscious of what your eating because even some "acceptable" foods will sometimes cause cravings.

so i figured out what it is...it's seriously something buried deep in my subconscious that doesn't want me to get past day 4. i swear...i'm perfectly fine, and then on day 4 my brain starts coming up with any excuse possible to cheat and start over the next day. anyways, thanks for all the advice, now i'm pretty sure i will be prepared for day 4 when it comes. i'm going to go out of my way to make sure i make it through.

                            Re: newbie needs serious help!

I started and stopped a lot on induction.
I first heard about atkins in the early 90s. and i tried it but it never stuck.
I got sick in 2006 and spent about 10 days in the hospital so it scared me about my health.
Then I had surgery in 3/2007 and my doctor told me that atkins is okay and he eats low carb.
so one day it hit me.
Labor day 2007, I stopped eating bread, rice, potatoes, pasta.
Once I made up my mind to never eat this again, induction was a breeze.
i am a carb addict. and I will never recover.
but once you hit bottom, it will feel better to stop going off induction. you will get to a point where you will want to stay on atkins because it feels good, you love the results, and it gets easy. I mean after awhile on atkins, its easy. No other diet in my life was easy.
I can pass up free bagels every friday at work, SINCE august of 07.
I can pass up free pizza at work, since august of 07.
I never ever could do this on any other diet.
Atkins works. It works for me. and now there is no other way I would ever want to live.
                            Good luck.
