  • Help!! I do not understand the carb count

    Hi Community,
Thanks for all your messages. It is all very helpful.
I have read the boards, i bought the book.

But i still do not understand the count for Veggie net carbs.
In the book Dr. Atkins says 20 net carbs- of which 12-15 from Veggies.
and then goes on saying maximum 3 cups of salad or 2 cups of salads and 1 veggies.

The math do not add up:
1/2 cup of Romaine is only 0.2 -- so 2 cups is only 0.8 net carbs
1 cup of veggies varies but in any event the total is nowhere near the required 12 net carbs per day.

I also checked many menus and saw that they have very little veggies.
often a lot less than 12 net carbs.

    Please help!
    Thanks
Ps: on Induction day 5th now-
126 lbs- I only want to lose 6lbs/8lbs.

Well, one thing is that "salad" veggies aren't just lettuces. If you check our lists they also include olives, mushrooms, cucumbers, peppers and a variety of other veggies that add additional nutrients and carbs to your diet (not to mention variety). Also, your vegetables will vary according to type. green beans, asparagus, summer squash all have slightly different counts so on days that you are needing more veggie carbs, choose from the higher ones and on days when you are close to 20 choose the lower carb ones. Although personally, as long as you are eating 20 carbs I think you should be fine. I always went to about a 2/3 or 3/4 cup serving on some veggies like string beans because I love them and was still hungry and hadn't reached my 20 carbs. Probably not by the book, but I don't think it hurt me in the long run.

If you want to do it by the book, the easiest way is to add olives. They are small, it is easy to add the right amount of carbs and you can snack on them or put them in a salad.

Actually, though the Atkins company website says to have 12-15 carbs of veggies, the rule in DANDR which we follow here is '3 cups' as stated. We are supposed to get 'most' of the up to 20 net carbs from our veggies, so you need to choose some of the higher carb ones if you want to include eggs, cheese and cream in your menus and still get most carbs from veg.

Careful choices from both lists can bring you to something close to 12 net carbs, so you need to compare carbs per cup of the various options and choose wisely. We have had veg challenges here where people have managed to get 12 net carbs from 3 cups of induction veg, so it is possible

Remember that olives are on the 'special category' list so can be added now and again to give some variety, and though we do count their carbs they do not come in the 'veg' 3 cups.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

        Hi, and thanks for helping.
According to the food list 1 cup of broccoli is only 2 net carbs
same thing with cucumber and Cauliflower- which are the foods that i am eating mostly. So to make for 12 net carbs i need much more than 1 cup a/day OR am i missing something??

Can you please give me the carb count for eggs? i thought eggs had no carbs?

        Thanks again for your help,

Elizellen, advised fitday to me when I was confused and it has been a blessing although it can be time consuming at first. Good luck on your weight loss

Re: Help!! I do not understand the carb count

Eggs and dairy products (cheese, cream, etc) do have carbs, but generally the carb count is less than one per piece so some packaging will show zero which is untrue. Many of us set up an account at fitday.com to track what we eat and let it do the carb counting for us.

Personally, I don't fret too much over the exact carbs from veggies. I try to get in the three cups from the list and let the carbs figure themselves out. While I have not yet stepped on a scale, I know for certain my clothes are loser than 10 days ago so it must working OK.

Now go enjoy a salad and quit stressing about it!

Thanks Eric, I am trying not to stress out, but the scale is up 1.8lbs since yesterday so i need to figure things out.

I am using Fitday for the past 2 days.
Would you know if Fitday counting carbs or net carbs?

              Thanks always for your help!

Fitday is counting carbs, you need to subtract your fiber from the carbohydrates for NET carbs Just check the columns and adjust your intake accordingly.

Just a thought here . . . did you get on the scale each day before you started induction?

If like me you avoided it, then you will probably not be aware that our body weight fluctuates up and down not only through each day but through each week, so you might be noticing a normal weight-wobble for your body and nothing needs changing in what you eat.

Re: Help!! I do not understand the carb count

                      Hi Elli,
Thanks for your insight. You'r right, this is a day to day weighting so it could be inaccurate- And actually there are a number of things that could have created the weight gain: 1) I am pre-menstrual and now even feel bloated 2) i had 2 shakes yesterday and now will take them off my menu 3) I did not count net carbs for eggs and had more than the allowed veggies because i did not understand the counting.

So! instead of giving up i decided to get more determined and there i go.
Thanks again to everyone, happy saturday night!

Elizellen, good point there. Of course we don't realize how much our weight fluctuates in a week until we are at our most vulnerable - during a weight loss period. If I take too much notice of the scales I could get so depressed. On Sunday 22 June I had lost 21lbs today 29 June I have lost only 19lbs. The scales are not always our friends, making us happy when we appear to see a low number and miserable when we see a different higher number. I wish I could go without weighing, just maybe once a month but the bloomin things are addictive just like sugar that got me in this mess in the first place.

Hi! I think in only 1 day of eating right, not having shakes -i am back on track.
I tested positive for Ketone this morning.
Weighted and i am back to where i started the week.
Now i look forward to the real weight loss!
