Ok, so if you can eat 2 cups off the salad list and one cup off the other list: How the heck will it ever add up to 12-15 net carbs. the math simply doesn't fit. I can't seem to get more than about 10 net carbs and I'm only getting to about 15 total each day. (and struggling to get that) I have spent a LOT of time on Fitday entering all my salad dressings and all my custom foods and being SUPER particular and tracking every last 1/2 teaspoon of everything. So.....I don't get it. I'm not eating the cream, avocado, or olives. I am eating all my "allowed" veg - but it doesn't add up.

Can someone please help clarify this for me.

    Re: veggie question

you really need a carb counter--a good one--not fitday

7 layer very basic 2 cup dinner salad:
1 cup iceburg or any lettuce 1.5 carbs
1/4 cup raw stems and pieces mushrooms 1.5 carbs
1 stalk celery sliced up 2 carbs
green pepper 3 rings cut thin 2 carbs
cucumber sliced thin 8 slices 1.5 carbs
tomato--4 slices or 1/2 cup cherry 5 carbs
onion 4 thin round slices cut up 5 carbs

    dressing---2 carbs or less...........

well..... I guess that would eat up your 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup of other veg for 20.5 carbs and leave you with no cheese or optionals (not to mention spices on meats or seasonings) and you just ate all your carbs in one sitting.

What carb counter do you like?

I only eat about 10 carbs from veggies. The rest I get from eggs. As long as you're eating 3 cups of veggies, I wouldn't worry to much about the carbs (unless you're going way over )

what? you can cut down a bit on onions and tomato..add in your cheese and what ever...even a hard boiled egg on top and real bacon bits--not all veggies have the same carb count-- like a cup of broccoli is 7 carbs but a cup of spinach is 2.5---my hunger is not the same almost 6 weeks in..at lunch a cup of salad and a protein is enough..my one cup of veggie is usually split between breakfast and dinner..and the one cup more salad is in between meals and dinner...rung 1 ---I added a little more and different veggie's

the point of the post was for you to understand and learn to carb count-
--fitday was to try to help you with 60% fat 30% protein 10% carbs
you need to find what your reccommended calorie intake is for your
age, weight and activity level --mine is close to 2300--and try to stay at that level--a few hundred on induction is o.k.--so your metabolism is eating your stored fat and not what you overate...

            Re: veggie question

AS Bill has demonstrated, if you choose your veg carefully you can achieve 'most' of your 20 net carbs from the 3 cups.

Twice a year we have a 'Veggie Challenge' where those on induciton try to get 12-15 net carbs from their 3 cups of veg and many people manage to do that, so if you are having problems getting more than 3-5 net carbs from veg now maybe join the next one and get some help from the other participants to up your own count.

If you read previous threads in the Semi-Annual Challenges forum (http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...hallenges/) on this topic you might glean some useful advice to help you before the next challenge starts.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Thanks for clearing that up, Bill. I'm sorry I was one that didn't understand what you were getting at, either.

So, when I fix my two cups of Induction legal salad, don't just open a bag of precut salad and dump two cups in a bowl??? Add some green peppers, mushrooms, onions, etc. Gotcha!

There are about 20 vegetables on the "salad" list. So don't limit yourself to only lettuce. Cucumbers, red or green peppers, celery, mushrooms, jicama, are on that "Salad" list too. So rather than eating a green salad---a salad made only of leafy green veggies---have a mixed salad with the other 19 salad list veggies on it!

By the way, all the vegetables on the "Salad" list can be cooked (yes, including the lettuce.) Dr. Atkins never wrote that we had to eat those "Salad" vegetables raw (personally, I like mushrooms, which are on the "salad" list, cooked.) So you can use them in cooked preparations, like stir fry.

There is a tool on the internet (free) called Fitday.com. I'm sure there are others as well. While you are going through the learning phase of Atkins, use it to calculate your carbs, fats and protein. It may just crystallize what everyone else has been saying about the carb counts for various veggies.

                      Re: veggie question

Thanks for the spreadsheet Bill - that is very helpful. do you (as in you personally) count net or total carbs? B/c you posted that broccoli has 7 carbs and spinach 2.5 and net carb wise Broccoli has 4 and Spinach .5 in a cup. So I think this of of my confusion is that part.

My big problem is I am a salad purest - I HATE all the raw veggie "junking" up my salad. Every once in a while I'll take a cucumber. I like cheese and nuts (Of course they don't help the veggie situation). But I don't even like carrot or tomatoe and raw mushrooms and pepper really don't agree with me. I love ALL these veggies cooked - so throwing them on my lettuce and snakign them in that way has been hard. I have been trying. I did add celery yesterday.

Fitday is fine to see the percentges. But you have to customize everything with carbs to show net vs total carbs. Then it forces you to change the calorie counts - so that is no longer accurate. The ration also get skewed but only slightly. My biggest problem is the way the program rounds. It won't calculate to a decimal and some thing that is 1.6 net carbs (such as a cup of ice burg lettuce) it counts as 1. I am going to keep entering it and keep a runnign tally by hand so i can easiely see which carbs are from veg and which from eggs and cheese. OTherwise Ian't tell what I am really adding my 5 additional veg carbs to.

Am I the only one thinking of this in this way? Am I trying to do it too accurately?

should have posted raw-- cup--- cut up to be accurate--again I should have said I was just pointing out--all veggie's of coarse have different carb count's for Raworcooked --with fats and other minor herbs spices and garlic---and NEt is different from Total

I have been reading your posts and I now understand you like your information accurate and percise. I can only wish to be so organized!
I do not follow my diet so close as to count every carb..I do study the list as new items(that I never had before) are added or all new one's introduced to my diet for the first time--I do stick to 2 cups mixed salad and one cup of some veggie (from the list)---

6 weeks in--at an average of 5 pounds per week for me--has me not questioning if I'm controlling it correctly---but if I stall--or (groan) Gain--I will not be so laxadazical

grrr my post got timed out and it ate it - I hate when that happens!

thanks Bill, You are right on - I am one of "those" people who have to be over organized and precise - sometimes to my detrement. But I have found that if I don't do that I have trouble staying on track. I've always been an all or nothing type. With my girls (My oldest just turned three and my twins are 18 months) I really struggle during the day. It's hard to meal plan, cook, count carbs. And as much as I'd lvoe to do it theday ahead. Otheran dinner my days get turned inside and out and I need flexibility right now. I like to be able to have a nice balanced dinner. My husband and i eat after the girls go down for the night and it's my only adult time for the day. I have a heard time b/c I have the tendency to sit down at 5 and tally the day and realize I haven't done well enough eating my veg.

5lbs a week av. is AWESEOM way to go :clappy I'd be so thrilled to pull a 1.5-2lbs a week av. If I wasin your shoes I would be so precise either!!!

Thanks for that chart that will help me a lot. Then i can keep a running tally through my day. I livea long ways from a book store and I need a good carb counting book!

                          Thanks!

One of my big problems right now is not being able to eat tomatoes. They are such an essential ingredient and I think they produced a BIG problem for me during induction. I was three weeks in and literaly felt drugged dopy after eating them for two days (about 3/4cup raw) so I have stopped them - but i KNOW if I could have them I'd be so much more creative! I am dying to try the pizza! I thi I am going to get through this week (my first week working rung 1 OWL) and then give them a try again and see if I get the same results. Hopefully it was a detox thing and not on-going. But I worry b/c I am allergic to the plants and have to wear long sleeves to tie up my plants.

I'd like to eat quiche - but that's the weird egg - thing. It's taken me 7 years to be able to eat eggs again. I know lots of people have weird egg relationships.

Anyone have a good recipe for broccoli cheese soup? and I'd love more ideas with turnips!
