  • Confused about DANDR and Net Carbs

I admit that I've only really studied the pages of DANDR that cover Induction (p. 107-154) and have only skimmed the rest. I'm on day 6 of Induction and am doing pretty well. I've read on this board that the members here follow Dr. Atkins 2002 book, which is the one I have. What I'm confused about is that the Rules of Induction in DANDR don't talk in terms of Net Carbs, they talk in terms of Carbs (see p. 123 and 143 for example). I know I must be missing something. My mom did Atkins years ago and doesn't remember the Net Carbs concept either. She counted total Carbs. I know you all are experts so I thought I'd ask you. I definitely don't want to be figuring this wrong. Is the Net Carbs concept in the 2002 version of DANDR?

And then my last question, although DANDR says a good rule of thumb is to count one ounce of cheese as 1.0 carb, don't you think it's okay to follow Dr. Atkins' Carb Gram Counter book and include the actual Net Carb count, which happens to be way less than 1.0 for the kinds of cheese I always eat -- cheddar (0.4 net carbs/oz) and muenster (0.3 net carbs/oz)?

    Thanks everyone!

Re: Confused about DANDR and Net Carbs

In his original book (Dr Atkins Diet Revolution aka DADR) in the 70's he worked with total carbs including fibre, but in the years between this book and Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution aka DANDR he changed his thinking.

Dr Atkins talked in DANDR about the 'carbs that count' and told us to deduct fibre from any carbs listed for foods we eat, so we work with 'net carbs'.

As for counting cheese as being one carb per ounce on induction, I think he realised that is is easy to eat shedloads of cheese if you love it (as I do) and wanted to restrict us as cheese often can be a 'staller' for people, hence the 3-4 ounce limit.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: Confused about DANDR and Net Carbs

What I do with cheese is use the actual number of carbs given on the package or on Fitday, but make sure I don't eat more than 4 oz. This way I 'save' more carbs for veggies.

Re: Confused about DANDR and Net Carbs

        Kristen,
I totally understand what you are talking about. When I first started Atkins in August I thought I just count the carbs, period. I didn't find in the book that I was to count the net carbs only. In his list of foods and carbs the fiber isn't taken out or mentioned, at least in the 2002 book I had from the library. So here I was eating only 20 or most days less than 20 carbs period a day. I lost like crazy. I was really happy about that. BUT, I was not feeling like I was eating enough of the "good" stuff, veggies and such. I was skimping on the veggies and using my carbs on stuff like heavy cream for my coffee, eggs, cheese, and splenda. Now that I have started counting my carbs and fiber on fit day I am able to work in more veggies and feel safe doing it.

I am starting with a whole new problem myself and that is I have started owl and in just the last couple of days let myself count too many "sweets", legal of course, as quite a bit of my carb total for the day. I was enjoying too many cheese clouds, and crustless keylime pies and such. I am going to get a handle on that this week! I have to. I refuse to let myself get back into the habit of poor eating. I need to take care of myself for me and my family.

I wish you luck. I hope you find a happy place that works for you.

I was confused by this at first too. What I've been doing is counting the cheese net carbs by the amount of net carbs listed in Dr. Atkins' Carb Gram Counter book, but not eating more than 4 onces of cheese a day.

Chapter 8, the subsection called "The Carbs That Count" goes into the whole subtracting fiber thing for net carbs or "digestible carbs" as the carb counter in the back of the book calls them.

Basically, you can deduct the grams of fiber from the food's total carb count. I called the net number of grams.
This is one of the confusing things about the book---Dr. Atkins expects you to read it from cover to cover and carry-over concepts he introduces from chapter to chapter.

just remember its carb minus fiber... don't be filled with products that say net carb 3 and there is 17 carbs no fiber but 14g sugar alcohol

I definitely like my new book better where the "fiber" is listed beside the carb count and then I know what to subtract. The version from the library was not clear on that and yet both books are 2002 versions!

This si where I have always been confused.
I always thought you took the carbs and subtracted the dietary fibers, sugar alcohols, malitol. I think there is naother one, and if it was under so many carbs it was "legal" Now what everyone is saying is you only subtract the Dietary Fibers from the original carb count?

The 2002 edition is the first one to do net carbs. I have read the 1999 edition from cover to cover and it was never mentioned.
