This is my second time around. I lost 35 pounds doing atkins after my first daughter. I just had my second child in October and I am ready to go! The first time we (my husband has baby weight to lose too) were diligent about never going over 20 carbs. He has been good this time but me not so much. I have been averaging between 22-25. We are on day 12 and I have lost 9 pounds so I know it's working. Last time around we did cheat. We'd splurge with one meal about once a month and we still both met our goals and stayed that way until I got pregnant again. Anyway my brother has been in the hospital and unable to eat for a while. As a way to celebrate his release tomorrow he is having the entire family over for a big pancake breakfast. I KNOW that it will not be good for us to cheat this early. But will it undo everything we have done? My husband said he will not cheat but I think it would be rude for us not to go or to go and not eat. Advice please and thanks a million!!

Re: cheating
Not going to get me to condone any cheats in induction
But nice try.
How about checking out what else they serve in addition to pancakes and celebrate without a cheat.

Re: cheating
I think your husband is having the right attitude. There will be many moments when you can find a gazillion excuses to cheat. However, if you want to make Atkins a way of eating for life, then you will have to learn how to deal with them.
Does your family know you are doing Atkins? If not, you should definitely tell them and explain why you cannot eat anything that has sugar, flour, etc. There are so many other ways of showing your happiness for your brother being back home other than eating a pancake. Why not treat him with a cheesecake? A low-carb one, I mean... Then you could have cheesecake, while the rest could have both! I'm pretty sure they'll appreciate it and not find it rude."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Re: cheating
Im not an expert in the matter, but I think if you're family is being so supportive of your brother and his not being able to eat while being hospitalized then they should be equally as supportive of you for taking control of your diet/health. I think cheating with pancakes is really going to slow your results, possibly knock you out of ketosis, make you discouraged, and may cause you to continue cheating. Now are pancakes really worth all that??????????? Something to think about.

Re: cheating
I have cheated and from my experience it did me more harm than good. It threw me out of ketosis and I basically had to start over again. I don't think I have to tell you how hard it is to get started. Then the worst thing is cheating and not being able to stop before you regain everthing you lost.

Re: cheating
See the thing for me is this. Atkins works VERY VERY well for me. Once I got to my target weight I ate good carbs and kept it off. I just need a jump start loosing the weight. I know I am trying to make excuses...
I remember before throwing me out of ketosis and going back within a day or two. I need to get some new test strips. Also I do have some self control. I can cheat for one meal and go back the next day. But again more excuses. I was just looking for opinions and thank you so much for sharing them!

When you did Atkins the last time, did you follow the diet properly and go through the 3 weight loss phases or did you just stay on Induction phase the entire time?
See, if you follow the Diet properly, then "cheating" is a relative matter. That is, what is a "forbidden" food on Induction, such as oatmeal, isn't a necessarily "forbidden" food during On-Going Weight Loss Phase or Pre-Maintenance Phase (and most certainly isn't a forbidden food on Maintenance Phase.)
Also, if you follow the Diet properly keeping your net carb intake at 20 daily isn't required for the vast majority of us to either lose or maintain weight, because during OWL Phase, you find your carbohydrate level to lose weight and during Pre-Maintenance, you find your carbohydrate level to maintain the weight. For me, I could eat up to 50 net carbs daily and lose weight. I can eat up to about 65 and still maintain it. Only a very small percentage of people need to keep their carbs so low in order to lose weight or maintain it. In the time I've been at ADBB, there have only been 3 or 4 members who needed to stay that low for weight loss and weight maintenance.
As for rudeness, look at it this way.... losing weight is a medical/health necessity for you. So is it truly rude to decline eating something because it is injurious to your health? For example, would it be rude for a person allergic to peanuts to decline eating a peanut butter sandwich? Would it be rude for a person with uncontrolled diabetes to decline eating cotton candy? Would it be rude for a person allergic to eggs to decline eating a platter of scrambled eggs?
I would say to go to the family breakfast and bring additional food, like a frittatta that you and your husband and others who might not particularly like pancakes to eat (personally, I like waffles.) I've found that at family gatherings extra food is always welcome.

Re: cheating
You sound like me the last time/first time I did Atkins. Then I ended up 235 pounds in a years time after being 15 pounds from my goal weight. It is really really simple. If you are going to do it, do it. If you are just going to talk about it and not really do it, enjoy the pancakes. Either way, it is up to you.
Good luck with your dilemma.

Re: cheating
Actually, it takes less time to throw together a frittatta that feeds 6-8 people then it does to cook pancakes for 6-8 people (believe me, I've done both many times and frittattas are easy-peasy compared to mixing batter and cooking individual pancakes.) Vegetable Frittata Recipe : : Food NetworkOriginally posted by alliesmommy View PostSorry should have clarified. We were on induction for only a month or so. Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure what to do yet. It will be a spur of the moment decision. Bringing food in this situation is not practical for what it is. But thanks anyway
But I've learned on my Atkins journey that it's just as easy to not find an excuse to cheat as it is to find an excuse to cheat.

Re: cheating
sounds like a byob event... bring your own bacon!
or have already eaten and just have coffee. That wouldn't be rude, especially if you let him know you have changed your diet.
if you do partake of the cakes, then just keep on going with Atkins next meal... and restart induction.Best Regards ~Kellen

Re: cheating
If you're going to cheat, are pancakes really the thing to do it with? Do you love them so much that they are going to be worth it? If not, take an egg dish and be done with it.
If it was me, pancakes wouldn't even tempt me. Now cinnamon rolls might, but pancakes I could walk by without blinking an eye. Oh, wait, I did that today. I made breakfast for dinner. The kids got pancakes. I had eggs.

Re: cheating
My buddy advises that he goes full out on a work out untill he cant possibly do anymore the day before he did he cheat day. And the following day he ate anything he wanted (i.e.) french toast, candy bars, sodas, just lots of sugar to throw the body out of whack. Then proceeded back to induction. But did this every 2 weeks. he went to the gym everyday but cheat day. He went from 315 to 205 in 7 months by continuing the same trend. I have started the trend also. But mine is a little stricker than a regular induction. Mine is try to account for less than 5 carbs a day like his was.

Re: cheating
my advice (although i'm also new to this WOE): don't let other people dictate what you should eat. they don't have to live in your body, you do.
i have found out that people have gotten offended because i won't eat something, but after a while it ceases to become an issue because they already know my 'rules.'
