    Hiya

I've just read that Splenda could be a cause in weight loss stalling to some people (in a previous thread).. even though we are allowed 3pks

Just wondering who has had bad experiences with Splenda..... if any?

Thank goodness I can say that Splenda has not affected me negatively...and I must admit I indulge in more than what is allowed. I am really not sure if I could do this way of eating without it as I'm a confirmed sweet-o-holic!

The only problem I personally have are the headaches and the after taste. The few times I have tried it I have not experienced a stall though.

I switched to Sweetn'Low before I started Atkins because Splenda caused me to have dry eyes, so I don't know if it stalls or not, but the S&L doesn't.

Splenda gives me a mild rash on my neck and arms.

I use blue agave nectar if I want something sweet, or just plain raw honey.

I quit all artificial sweeteners after my brain tumor diagnosis! (Seriously, I know it sounds like a joke but it's true.) They are considered a neurotoxin and have caused seizures and headaches in many people. Not everyone experiences them, but for some people it is a cumulative thing where for a long time it doesn't affect you adversely then all of a sudden you're having migraines and you don't know why. There is plenty of evidence that it is not as safe as the commercials would have us believe.

According to a webpage I found, agave syrup is fairly high in carbs - 5.33 per teaspoon!
Agave Nectar - Madhava Honey - Fine Colorado & Rocky Mountain Honey Products
8 )Total Carbohydrate Grams: Serving Size: This product falls into the "honey" category, and thus its serving size is 1 tablespoon (note: tablespoon and not teaspoon). In turn, 1 tablespoon of Agave Nectar weighs 21 grams. Based on the fact that it contains on the average 77% solids, one serving (1 tablespoon) contains 16 grams total carbohydrates (21 grams x 77% = 16 grams).
                9) Calories per Serving: A serving (1 tablespoon) contains 60 calories.
(One serving contains 16 grams of total carbohydrates. One gram of carbohydrate provides 4 calories. Therefore, 16 grams of total carbohydrate contains 64 calories, but a few of these calories are not digestible.)

It does have a high carb count as most natural sweetners do, but guess what...It has a very minimal impact on your blood sugar because your system can metabolize it very slowly. Your body knows what to do with it, plus it's loaded with nutrients the same as raw honey.

It's something to consider using in the later phases of Atkins.

I agree with everything you said and have witnessed first hand what fake sweetners can do to people.
My aunt was loaded with tumors and false MS symptoms from years and years of aspertame and saccarhin (?) use.

I am so sorry to hear you had to endure those tumors. I hope you are feeling better now!!!

Re: Splenda YES.. vs Splenda NO

Great thread. It is good to have a discussion about sweeteners.

I am skeptical about agave as it is almost pure fructose and metabolized through the liver. Many studies have linked increased fructose use to increased obesity. See for instance here

I do use some Splenda with out any adverse problem that I know about. But I do try to limit my sweetener consumption.

Re: Splenda YES.. vs Splenda NO

From what I understand, Agave Nectar is low glycemic because it is mostly Fructose instead of Sucrose and that is what makes it have a low GI.
Fructose has a glycemic level of 22 and Sucrose GI is around 64.
Isn't it considered that anything above a GI range of 40 enters the blood too quickly?

Agave is low glycemic but is is carby and when the liver tries to metabolize it bad things can happen. Being low glycemic does not make up for those kind of shortcomings in my opinion.
Here is a good blog by Eades if you want to read more about it. Pretty interesting stuff.

Splenda seems to be sort of a Gateway drug for me. I can handle 3 a day no problem. If I have more than that, I start to get a sweet tooth. It does not stall my weight loss, but jacks up my cravings. Good Luck!

I think that the Splenda has the same effect on me that it does with you bigRob. It doesn't stall my weight loss, but I do start getting those cravings for something sweet. I had to just cut them out. (And I raise bees, sheesh...talk about temptation).
