  • PLEASE Learn from my mistakes. :(

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO mad at myself right now. :

I have ALWAYS been one to read ingredients lists - even before I started atkins - when I was on weight watchers or when I was just doing it "on my own" - i ALWAYS read ingredients lists (along with the nutritional information)...

But now I know why it has been 25 days and I ONLY lost 5 pounds my first week on atkins and haven't lost anything since. I am so mad, i want to cry...

BUT before I tell you why - I will say that the second I saw this - this morning - I threw the bottle out in the trash - no questions asked, even though the bottle was still pretty full and I hate "wasting" food...I didn't care - out in the trash it went this morning.

So before i even started atkins, I've ALWAYS looked at the ingredients list to make sure that what i'm buying does NOT contain ANY type of corn syrup - especially High Fructose Corn Syrup...

But yup - what was right there smack dab in the middle of the ingredients list of my wal-mart brand mayonnaise? yup - you guessed it. HFCS - or as I like to call it POISON!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how or why I missed reading the ingredients when I first bought this (and, btw, this is my second bottle of this type of mayo this month) - but I am sooooooooooo mad and upset.

If this is the reason why I haven't lost anything, than I accept my mistake and understand why I haven't lost more than those first 5 pounds that first week, but I am so mad

But believe me - that POISON is absolutely OUT of my house and I am going to read EVERY SINGLE INGREDIENT of everything I buy now - even if it takes me 3 hours to go grocery shopping, I will be reading EVERY SINGLE INGREDIENT of EVERYTHING I buy.

Which, again - I usually do - but for some reason I just didn't on this item - it has 0 g carbs/0 g sugar - but i just didn't look at the ingredients. :

so again, PLEASE learn from my mistake . and from here on out - it's TOTALLY "clean" from here on out.

Re: PLEASE Learn from my mistakes.

oh god, just read this and ran to check my mayo ingredients, it lists sugar, but according to the nutritional info it has 1.5g/100g of carbs, so i think that is ok, yes? i'm hardly eating it anyway.

but thanks for the warning about checking actual ingredients, i would never have thought of that!

Re: PLEASE Learn from my mistakes.

I wasn't checking labels on things I "knew" the carb count on either.

I bought a store brand of cream cheese and after I had eaten half the package, I read the label and it is 2 carbs per ounce instead of the normal 1 carb per ounce.

Another thing to help with creeping carbs is liquid Splenda. The packets have 1 gram each, but the liquid has no carbs.

It's pretty hard to find, but I found EZ-Sweet liquid sucralose (the same thing as Splenda) online at Netrition. That will save me three carbs per day.

Don't be too upset, Keriann. It's going to take time to get our weight off, and this is just a temporary setback. At least you won't make that mistake again.

          Hiya Hon

Firstly (big hug) I know exactly how you feel. I am on day 22 and have lost only 7lbs.. - was eating a baddies somewhere as it took me to day 4 to get into ketosis.. then the second week( at the end ), I found the same thing.. my mayo had sugar... grrrrr
Then in week three I was so sick with flu that I had to have cough syrup.. plus I had a few glasses of whiskey (my own silly choice)

PLUS... STARTING the day before WEeK 4 TOM arrived...

SO............ Not the best of starts for me either, but I guess, 7lbs down is 7lbs down (if you look at how much a pound of butter is - WOW).. and on top of it, I've been measuring.. and have lost inches.. So thats something..
Well.. lets get onto this week and get going,...

          Good luck hon..

Hey Kerri-Ann! Well, atleast you caught it! Don't be too hard on yourself, though - instead be proud of yourself for checking and getting rid of it! There are brands out there without any. I have a generic brand I bought from a small store here that has no sugar in it. Does Hellman's have added sugars? Can't remember...

              Hi,
Trader Joes' mayonaise makes a mayonaise that is sugar free. It's pretty tastey too.

I just checked, and my mayo (although 0carb/serving) contains sugar as well. I eat a fair amount of it, but have still lost weight. Do you guys think that it just effects some people differently? Should I throw it out anyway? I'm like you Keriann, I *hate* to waste, but I don't want to open myself up to the 'carb creep', either.

I don't understand. I thought that as long as it wasn't in the first few ingredients that it was ok to have. I got this from:
                  Q & A

Q: My mayonnaise jar says 0 carbs but the ingredients list sugar. Help!

A: Read the ingredients list again. Ingredients are listed in a descending order. In other words the ingredients listed at the top of the list are in a greater concentration than the ingredients at the bottomof the list. So, if the sugar is listed towards the bottom, it's okay to use. But be sure to count the carbs.

                  Quote:
Product A ingredients: Eggs, soybean oil, salt, sugar, spices.

Sugar is listed at the bottomof the list, so the product is "okay"to use.

Product B ingredients: Eggs, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, corn oil, salt.

2 sugars are listed at the top of the list. Put this product back on the shelf!

yeah - i'm not so sure about just "sugar" being listed - but for me, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP specifically is absolute RAT POISON!!!!!! if the ingredients list "sugar" and the NI says 0g/carbs 0g/sugar - then (as i posted in another post around here) i'll be counting at least 0.5 if not 1 g carbs for that - but it's the EVIL poison that is known as HFCS.

thank you for all your replies - but it still sucks.
at least I did go down to the cafeteria here at work and stole some heinz mayonnaise for my tuna salad for lunch
I checked on the 'net too and it does NOT contain any HFCS in it.

I feel your pain Kerri Ann! Thanks for the Trader Joes suggestion! I will be going there this weekend too - so far I have been using my grocery store version of mayo, 1 g of sugar/carb but there is sugar listed on the ingredients, second to last ingredient but still not 100% induction safe! Look at it this way - be happy because maybe this is what has been stalling you!!! Now you can move forward and probably lose more.

Trader Joes is a grocery store (www.traderjoes.com) - don't know if there are any in Oklahoma though? Check out all of the locations on their website - maybe if you have a friend or family member that lives near one they can buy it and send it to you? I don't believe you can order their products online. The other alternative is that Duke's mayo that everyone was talking about - I guess it's sugar free and you CAN order that online.
