  • Exercise during Induction phase

Do you guys recommend exercise during the induction phase. I just started my induction yesterday, and I have to say that today is sooooo much better than yesterday. Yesterday, I felt like giving up but I didn't I'm diabetic (type 2)so I felt like I couldn't make it but I'm constantly checking my blood sugar to make sure that it's not going too low...

I have 2 questions, prior to my induction phase, I was going to the gym 5x a week (cardio for 45 mins each and some strength training 2x a week) Should I continue this or do you recommend lesser exercise during the induction phase? since I wouldn't know how my body will react.

Second question is, if my blood sugar goes so low, I still want to continue this diet, what do you recommend for me to do (cause obviously I will need some carbs/sugar) I was wondering what you guys recommend, a glass of orange juice??? a piece of candy???

    Thanks!

    Re: Exercise during Induction phase

Dee, I'm certainly not an expert, but I do know that exercising on induction can be draining. The most important thing I learned is to be SURE to get my full allotment of allowed veggies in -- otherwise I would be very fatigued.

I found the half cup of canned pumpkin (with cream cheese, egg and spices) to be a real taste treat and also the most effective energy boost of any food on our list.

You will be dealing with a lot of changes anyway as your body switches over to burning fat and it will take a while for you to manufacture the enzymes necessary to do a good job of it. You may feel sick, nauseous and weak during that period.

I'd say go with what feels right for your body. If you feel like you are pushing too hard, you probably are. I had to back way off and work back up.

As for the blood sugar/diabetes questions, I'll leave that for someone with first-hand knowledge to answer.

Dee, sorry to reply to my own post, but your question is VERY important and I'm surprised that it's being overlooked.

Why don't you start a new thread with the word "Diabetic" in it. I know there are several diabetics here, and if they see that, they will probably jump in with your answer.

        Re: Exercise during Induction phase

I would recommend exercising as long as it feels ok - you have the energy, you don't feel like you're going to pass out, etc. Sometimes Induction can be tough on the body, but exercise can still be done. Even taking a brisk 15 minute walk counts so even if you can't do your normal routine just move as much as you can.

Like, Sunny_One said you should post your question about blood sugar here. There are many people who will be able to give you great answers.

        Wishing you much success!

          Re: Exercise during Induction phase

Hi Dee -- I read your post and wanted to put my 2 cents worth in.

I am also a Type 2 Diabetic. During induction I exercised everyday, as a matter of fact before I started this WOE I hadn't done any exercises so everything was new to me. I didn't have any trouble with my blood sugar going to low in fact my blood sugar readings started to get closer to what my endocrinologist wanted within 3 - 4 days. Last week (my 8th week on the plan) I saw my endocrinologist and she changed my meds - my fasting (morning) numbers were still a little high so I take more metformin at night, but my daily numbers were "spectacular" so she lowered my glyb/metformin from 10/1000 to 5/500.

What my doctor told me to do "if" my sugar numbers went too low was to take a glucose tablet -- luckily I haven't had to do this, but I do keep them close everyday in case I need one. I got mine in the pharmacy at Walgreens but I know they are in any pharmacy. I've talked to a few others who have Type 2 and they haven't had any trouble with their numbers going too low either.

Hope this helps -- there is a section of this board that is for diabetics -- you might try posting there also.... Diabetes & Atkins Low Carb Living - Atkins Diet

Exercise is non-negotiable according to Dr. Atkins. You do what you are physically able to do. So if you can only manage to walk to the corner store and back, that's what you do.

Rose, I use my very outdated 2003 Microsoft Front Page. I could write the HTML but I am too lazy... and too cheap to splurge on a new program that it would take me forever to learn!

                          Re: Exercise during Induction phase

Exercise is necessary, but hopefully you are working with your Doc on this. Exercise tends to have a hypoglycemic effect, and with the Atkins (less sugar and starches) you run the risk even more.

Be safe about it (it seems like you have been doing fine as far as checking your glucose levels).

                          Good luck!
