  • Fullness on Induction

    Okay, another question.

The other night before dinner I had some celery too close to when I was going to eat my dinner, which was something I had not planned on doing but it worked out that way, so when I sat down to my dinner which was

    Steak
    broccoli
    mushrooms sauteed in butter

I was soo full!! I was also drinking a lot of water before during and after dinner. I ate only half the steak but made myself finish most of the broccoli so I would get my veggies in.

So, I am wondering if anyone else gets really really full on Atkins and if you are supposed to feel this way or stop eating before you do? I feel like this is a pattern pre-Atkins for me so it feels strange to be so full and feel "bloated" after eating my dinner. The last time it happenned which was 3 days ago, I think, I woke up feeling thinner and had lost a lb, so it was weird. I wonder if I am doing something wrong? Guess I have to get around to posting my menu and see if something I am doing is going wrong but I have lost weight and my ketosis sticks are turning a light color, so I know I am losing ketones. Could this be the excess water that my body is holding onto?? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

    Re: Fullness on Induction

You should not stuff yourself with food until you're bloated. Eat only enough to satisfy your hunger and, if necessary, eat more often. You should also not go without eating for more than 6 hours.

Appetite suppression is a consequence of ketosis. However, it has it's advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are obvious for anyone who experienced the opposite symptoms while on a high carbohydrate diet. The main disadvantage is that, as weird as this may sound, some people simply "forget" to eat enough and are consuming an amount of calories significantly below their daily needs.

Are you using FitDay or any other similar tool to track your foods? That will tell you how much you are eating and help you plan better. Posting a few menus in the "Review My Menu" forum is not a bad idea either.

A significant part of the weight you lose during the first week of Induction is water weight. But after this period, the water balance is restored and you are mainly losing fat. From around the second week of Induction on, the reason for "wooshies" is that, when you lose fat, the fat cells will replace some of the fat lost with water, in an attempt to keep the pressure at the surface of their cellular walls constant. However, these cells can only hold on to a certain amount of water. When they reach a saturation point, a chemical is produced which helps flush the water, hence a sudden drop in weight. This is one of the reasons why it is good to take body measurements too, and not go exclusively by what the scale says.

I have that same feeling!!!! I'm actually getting mad because it's my hobby to eat. I'm full most of the time.

I just signed up for fitday last night so I'm curious if I'm doing anything wrong or if this is a good thing.

I did gain a couple of pounds. I'm thinking I'm just eating too much at a meal.

      Good luck,

      Lyn

Georgiana, thanks for this great explanation. I'd always wondered about this.

Thanks for the responses! I did not intent to stuff myself, I think I just drank too much water before dinner and had the celery too close to dinner. Then I did not feel really full until I was in the middle of the meal at which point I left half of the steak and just finished the veggies so I could get my veggies in. But now I have spread my meals and snacks out more and it feels so much better!!

I tracked one day in FitDay but have to keep doing it.

          Thanks!!!
