  • Beginner Question

    Hello all!

Ive done the Atkins style diet before and have had good success. This time when I started (2 days ago) I have put on approx 6 lbs from my starting weight. I have monitored what I eat very closely and have not had anything except some steaks(plain), some cheeseburgers minus the bun, beefsticks( less than one carb per stick), eggs, and string cheese. I have only drank water (lots of it at that) and had a couple diet cokes with splenda. I dont remember doing this the last time I went on the diet, but maybe I just didnt notice it. Is this normal or do I need to change something?

Who ate your vegetables? You need to have three cups per day during Induction and most of your net carbs should come from there.

You should read the book; here we go by the 2002 ed. of "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution". There are also sticky threads on top of the Atkins Diet 14-Day Induction forum. You'll may want to read those too.

Welcome to ADBB, by the way.

Hey Justin, Welcome! I agree that your best bet is to read the book, especially beginning with page 122 the Induction Phase. (I don't know I have a photographic memory lol). Anyway, Reading your post, I'd have to ask where the cheeseburgers came from. Home made? or did you get them from like, McDonalds and take off the bun? I make EVERYTHING at home, that way you know exactly what goes into it and con better control the carb count. If you got them from a restaurant, there could be anything in there. And remember, condiments count. So if it had Ketchup, your screwed. Mustard is ok, Hellmans Mayo is ok, Taco Bell "Restaurant" sauce in the tall bottle from the grocery store is ok, etc. Be positively sure you are reading labels. Anything that goes into your mouth is a carb count. Even a stick of gum, 2 carbs right there. And trying to stick below 20/day adds up QUICK. I strongly suggest for the best results, eggs, chicken, salad, and water. PERIOD. At least until your in ketosis, and you'll know cause you'll literally taste it. A wierd fruity/metallic taste that doesn't go away until you eat too many carbs. I'm rattling on here lol . Good luck buddy! You got my support!!

Those are great choices, but there is no reason why one should restrict himself/herself to these foods. Red meat, fish, shellfish can be consumed just as well. It is also not necessary to eat salad. You can cook all your vegetables, even the vegetables on the "Salad Vegetables" list. Plus, many of the vegetables on the "Other Vegetables" list taste better cooked, in my opinion. Besides meat, eggs and veggies, you can also have cheese, 1/2 avocado, 10-20 olives, etc. If it's on the Induction Acceptable Food List, then you can have it as long as you stick to the other rules of Induction.

Just keeping it simple . Georgiana's 100% correct, there is absolutely no reason to restrict yourself to chicken, eggs, and salad, you CAN have all those mentioned and more. It's just been my experience that most people I've directed to Atkins don't read the book, and when you get into counting veggies, they consider it a hassle and quit. If they start out simple, they get psyched with the immediate results, and then start to "realize" all the other things they can have, making that much better. My post was meant with good intent, and I apologize if it came across wrong.

What I should have said is, as a beginner, I strongly suggest you obtain and read "Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution" which will outline 100% the food items you can and cannot have, the correct steps to take to reach your goal weight, and successfully obtain the goals you've set for yourself. This is the best way to have a complete understanding of the journey you're about to take. Although everyone here is "dieting" under the same guidelines, you will likely get many varied responses when asking advice on the forums. Only you know your tastes, and the book I mentioned above provides lists of acceptable foods which will allow you to custom design your meals according to your personal preference, resulting in a menu that will be easier for you to maintain your "diet" and reach your goal weight. Good luck! You have my support!

              Hi Justin and welcome aboard.
You've had some great advice, so I hope you see results very soon. If you stick with the program and do it the way it's meant to be done you'll be successful for sure.

I'm moving this thread to the induction forum where you should get more views and hits.
