12-15 Net Carbs or 2 cups of Lettuce/1 cup of veggies... confused

    Wow, lots of confusion here! I also find the "salad vegetable" list is very light in carbs, but eating green/yellow beans, broccoli, cabbage etc. from the other group will up your carbs. I'm still waiting for my Atkins book to be delivered so I can read the latest version! I do half regular coffee & half decaf so far, and love my meats, so I don't have too much trouble getting to 20 grms of carbs a day. Keep at it everyone, you'll get there, after all, the weight didn't go on overnight, so we can't expect it to come off overnight!

      8.23 grams net carbs in a large head of iceberg lettuce.

      Not to sound rude or anything, but who ever said in the book that you need to have 20 carbs during induction? I do believe it said NO More than 20 carbs. We're shooting for Lipolysis, not Glucosis.

      Perhaps what I need someone to explain to me is what was the purpose of limiting a very fibrous vegetable like lettuce to only 3 cups. That's like 6 bites for me!!!

      I just finished reading the book yesterday and after loitering around this site for the last week and a half, it's almost like some people have different interpretations of the book (kinda like the Bible).

      I LOVE how helpful everyone is though. Hey, we're all in it for the same end result! This is going to be a life changing and for some- life saving experience...

        Salad does not mean lettuce.

        There are about 20 vegetables on the "salad" list. That "salad" list includes peppers, mushrooms, jicama, cucumbers, celery, radishes, etc. These are more filling and more nutritious (more fiber, more vitamins, more minerals) than lettuce.

        Also note that Dr. Atkins never writes if you need to measure veggies in its whole form, sliced form, diced form, shredded form. That affects how much is in that cup. For example, I can stuff 4 mushrooms into 1 cup, but when I slice them into 1/4 inch pieces, it measures to 1 1/2 cups. So it's easy to get the majority of your daily carb intake from vegetables alone.

        He only writes if the vegetable cooks down significantly, the vegetable needs to be measured raw.

          oh my god, i am still waiting for my books to arrive but am starting today and after reading this post i am more confused than i ever was.

          All i was going to do was have a couple of rashers of bacon in the morning with a couple of eggs.
          I have already had my decaf coffee with no sugar and no milk and intend to have some chicken with salad and cheese for lunch and chicken and veg with cheese for tea.

          Is this ok?? and how am i supposed to work out how much salad and veg i have!!!!

          I dont like any other meats so it will be chicken all the way.

          I was getting excited about doing this diet but am now very confused and am terrified that im gonna eat something or too much of something thats gonna ruin it x

            Sounds good to me. You can either weigh your vegetables or use measuring cups. The total should be three cups per day, with maximum one cup coming from vegetables from the "Other Vegetables" list.

            Cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day.

            No need to be "terrified" about Atkins. Even if you mess something up one day, you'll learn from your mistake, so that you don't mess up next time.

                I agree with Georgianna. Copy the Rules of Induction and the Induction Acceptable Foods List. Read them carefully and thoroughly. And refer to them frequently.

                If you do these things that will eliminate the guesswork and any misconceptions you may have (ie: eat only lettuce or eat only eggs and bacon for breakfast, etc.)

                I'm not sure why, but for some reason when people hear the word "salad" they automatically think of lettuce and nothing else. As I wrote there are over 20 vegetables on the "salad" list, so don't condemn yourself to eating lettuce alone.

                  thanks for that, but i am not one of those that think salad is just lettuce and the reason i am having bacon and eggs is because i dont like anything else and that seems the only thing that early that will fill me up!!!

                    Good for you that you are varying your veggies. As Megs wrote, many people do the mistake of identifying salad with lettuce and boy, don't they cheat themselves of nutrients and taste! Then there are other folks who live with the false belief that they can only eat their vegetables raw (in salads) and by the end of Induction they get so bored with their "limited" food choices that they think Dr. Atkins must have lied when he promised Atkineers that they'll be able to eat nutritious and tasty foods. To be honest, I really admire those who are able to stick to Atkins by eating this way -- I know I wouldn't have lasted long... *sigh*

                    If you ever get bored of bacon and eggs, you can have less "breakfasty" foods in the morning, like leftover meat, vegetables or soup, or stuff like muffins, quiche, mock danish, revolution rolls.

                    There is a sticky thread on top of this forum that has some basic recipes suitable for Induction. You may want to check it out.

                        You can also make mini quiches for a quick breakfast and use whatever quiche recipe you like (don't make the crust and substitute cream for milk).
