Re: Egg 1 carb , Say What! Grr these damn snacks

The other thing I just wanted to mention is water. When I feel I am having cravings or feeling hungry when I really shouldn't be, I grab my water. After I drink some water, I might have a snack but feel more in control of my choices. I have a 20 oz reusable water bottle and that is with me all the time. I never leave my house without it. So many times I have been running errands and eyeing the drinks in the store...and I will remember my water is in the car. It has saved me from some mistakes.

Just a thought. I have 3 boys (2 are teenagers), so I understand about the groceries. Its painful at times.

Would this be okay, Trying to keep it simple, If i start doing a bunch of different recipes then all that will on my mind is food. Anyways here's the typical Induction menu from 1999 copy of Atkins.

      Breakfast:
Eggs, scrambled or fried, with bacon, ham, sugarless sausage, or canadian bacon.
      Decaffeinated coffee or tea.

      Lunch:
      Bacon Cheeseburger, no bun.
      Small tossed salad.
      Seltzer water.

      Dinner:
Shrimp Cocktail with mustard and mayo
      Clear Consomme
Steak, roast, chops, fish or fowl.
      Tossed Salad (choice of dressings)
Diet Jell-O with a spoonful of whipped, artificially sweetened heavy cream.

Minus the Shrimp Cocktail and Jell-O i could probably eat that menu 75% of the week.

Here's the problem Ted. We follow the 2002 edition here. The 1999 book follows the 1992 Diet. There are differences between that version of the Diet and the one from 2002. The biggest difference is the amount of vegetables you may eat daily and net carb counting.

When you devise a menu for yourself, you have to ask these questions while looking over the Induction Acceptable Foods List:

      1. What do I like to eat on the list?
      2. What would I like to try at least once on the list?
      3. What is within my budget on the list?
      4. What on the list can I find in my supermarket?
      5. What can I and my family eat on the list?

It will bust your bank account if you continue to have 2 separate meals for you and your family. Get together with your wife and family. See what they are willing to eat on the list. Typically, most families will eat the same protein, like pork chops. It's really the side dishes that will differ.

So on pork chop night, instead of having stuffing, corn and mashed potatoes, the menu can look like this: pork chops, broccoli, salad, and mashed potatoes. You can have the pork chops and the veg. The family can have the pork chops, veg and starch. Two separate meals aren't being cooked nor bought. It saves money.

You seem to really love these eggs. Maybe you can answer my question in this thread: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...egg-brand.html

Re: Egg 1 carb , Say What! Grr these damn snacks

I also have a family of 5...I have a 7, 12, and 13 year old....I tend to eat a few eggs and either bacon or LC sausage for breakfast, sometimes if I feel energetic I will make an omelet. For Lunch, I also like salad, but try to get by with only 2 cups of salad and add in some spinach if possible and then top with your meats and some cheese, maybe a boiled egg cut up on top with some blue cheese or ranch. For dinner, I do like everyone suggests...its a bit easier on the budget to make casseroles and such for dinner but if I do that I will just pull some ground beef out and saute it with cabbage and have that with another veggie that the rest of the family will eat. You will be doing them a favor if you start them now eating vegies so that they don't end up like you in the future. (i keep telling myself this too! rofl) If you need a snack, I sometimes take a can of green beans and mix with mayo and pepper. Another thing I snack on is any meats that are left over from day before. I usually buy bulk on meats and bacon and such at costco's and then cook some ahead of time and refrigerate or freeze some for future use. You can microwave them to heat them up! However, over half of your carbs for the day should be veggies! Just aim for at least half and you should be ok...remember to minus the fiber from the carbs for your net carbs and I use fitday to help with that. Also, watch out for the sodium intake as that will give you a rough time and that low carb ice cream is not going to let you lose weight, sorry to say...try sugar free jello stirred up with some whipped heavy cream as a rare treat! Good luck to you!

While I agree that commercial low-carb ice-cream is questionable, sugar-free jello is sweetened with aspertame which is not allowed. It should be a very RARE treat indeed.

I wonder if there are any to be found somewhere that is not sweetened that way? I mean, are there any that are sweetened with splenda? And maybe its possible to make your own with a gelatin, artificial sweetener and flavoring? or flavored splenda syrups?

As for jello...in the Northeast at least, I can find the premade cups of jello that are sugarfree and are made with splenda. It is the Hunts brand. In my stores it is found near the baking section (near the boxes of jello), not in the refrigerator section.

Not something I eat very often still but I do usually have it on hand.

Is it fried? And have an induction legal carb with it, even if it is a tiny amount. Make sure you are getting enough fat overall and cut back on any dairy.

I found 2 weaknesses on this carb diet i have been on it 3 or 4 months.
One weakness carb smart ice cream.
second weakness Cream cheese & salami.
For 1 1/2 months 2 months i did nothing but indulge in those items.
I have not had any sugar have not had any corn syrup or flour.
Haven't technically fallen off the atkins diet.
The most i have had in a day was maybe, 50 carbs MAX!

The reason this over indulging went on so long is my 18 month old baby was in the hospital for a week and was having problems for over a month and had to have surgery. My cousin whom i have been very close. He and his wife had a premature baby 6 months old whom died after an hour of life.
During this time i would have 3 or 4 cups of coffee and 3 or 4 splenda's per cup. Food was my comfort. (low carb though !)

I would eat half a gallon of low carb ice cream and stuff my face with low carb items.

During this whole atkins process, i have never cheated, but i have cheated in my own low carb way. (Just like the book tells you to do if you need too. Changing it up.)

So anyways, I lost 30 lbs 15 or 16 lbs during induction and 5 lbs a week every week, till my Sabbatical if you will.
For 1 1/2 Months i ate carb smart ice cream and coffee with splenda and was breaking the 3 per day rule SOO BAD.

But I never gained 1lb and never lost 1 ounce. I stayed exactly the same weight.
Now i have stopped eating the ice cream and switched to (REAL) 0 carb sweetener and i stay away from the Cream cheese salami ( it stalls me) and i am losing more weight again.

The low carb ice cream is great stuff even abusing it and eating 24 carbs a day just in ice cream i was still able to continue with the atkins ( on pause) and lose weight. The thing is finding a way of making it work for you without breaking your goals i guess. Even in my darkest
                        Good luck

:::::::::::::::: Edit, my join date was 4-10-09 my starting day was 4-15-09 its 7-11-09 , so i have been on the diet for almost 3 months: ::::::::::::::::::

I don't want to keep editing the above post with dates and periods,so im just going to post below to recap the timer period.

I thought i had been on this thing longer, i guess it was for about a month i indulged.
2 weeks induction and about 3 weeks within 25 carb limit.

                          Take care

I get mine at a Price Chopper. I am not sure how wide spread they are but I know they were in NY when I lived there.
I don't have any of the other places near me. I usually shop at a locally owned grocery store.

Hope that helps and good luck. Jane

Good advice here for you. I for one have many times either thrown out or given away things that tempt me so badly as the ice cream was calling to you. It would be gone one way or the other and better it's in the garbage than on my hips.

If you throw something like that out a couple times you'll find yourself stronger at standing up to the temptations. It builds your will.
