  • Lunchmeat

I have been eating slices of turkey or chicken lunchmeat from my local grocery store. I try to select the lunchmeat that has low-to-no sugar and low-to-no sodium. This isn't easy at all and was wondering where others get their meat from. Do you cook entire roaster chickens, for example, and cut them up? I love the convenience of pre-sliced lunchmeat, so the lack of good options is disappointing.

    Thanks!

    Re: Lunchmeat

When I started this woe luncheon meats were a big part of my diet- then I started reading labels. Now most of what I eat is prepared fresh with plenty of extra for leftovers. Don't really know if it has helped my diet but I sure feel better about it.

I am the same as deerfu. I have for the most part kept away from lunchmeats. So much sugar is added. So I do roasted chickens or roasted beefs when I need to crab meats like that.

You may want to google how to roast a chicken Laura. It is a fairly easy thing to do. You need the chicken, an oven and some salt and pepper as the basic things. Are there some cooking classes where you are. Or you can get a nice basic cookbook. Learning to cook is a good way to learn how to eat more healthy. Those two go hand in hand. So good job on taking on that challenge.

                  Re: Lunchmeat

My local butcher carries a brand called Boar's Head. They are a little pricier but, to me, they are worth it in flavor and because they are more wholesome than some of the brands out there.

I've always roasted a chicken, turkey breast or some kind of roast on the weekend to eat during the week ... I subscribe to the "cook once, eat several times" school!!

                    Re: Lunchmeat

If you have access to a slow cooker/crockpot this is also an easy way to cook joints and whole chicken.

Just put the meat and a little liquid with some spices if you like and cook during the day and hey presto a readycooked joint or chicken awaits you on your return!
