  • Beer & Karma

My 14-day induction wraps up on Sunday. I plan to check my weight on Saturday morning since the family will be driving up to PA that day to visit my mom's side of the family who we haven't seen in several years. I'm sticking to plan and feeling great. I am just beginning to add exercise back into my routine.

One of the reasons we are going up is to celebrate my youngest cousin's birthday. She just turned 21, so I know alcohol will be part of the celebration on Sunday afternoon. Leading into this week, I was fairly confident that I could stick to water at the party since there will be plenty of activity and the kids will serve as an excuse to remain sober.

However, I received an email from my brother who mentioned that the "boys" are going out for beers on Saturday night when we arrive. It might look a little unusual for a guy who was formerly known as "the life of the party" to hang out at a bar with other "professional drinkers" and not have a bottle in hand. My willpower is beginning to crack around the edges.

So why the reference to karma in the title? Well, I know I've been spreading the "tough love" around here when other ADBBers mention alcohol, especially during Induction. I figure I deserve payback so feel free to throw all my "wisdom" back in my face as I stress over my current dilemma of how to handle a family reunion without being the odd ball out.

    Here you go, Eric.

You're a cool guy. I'm sure you'll still be "the soul of the party" even without drinking beer. Take an empty bottle of beer and fill it with water if you really want to make it look as if you're drinking.

Ouch. When I said to "throw all my wisdom back in my face," I wasn't thinking someone would take it so literally!

      Thanks Georgiana.

order a glass of mineral water or spring water or plain old tap with a lime (or lemon) twist in a Tom Collins or "rocks" glass.

Instead of being the life of the party, be the life who ensures everyone at the party gets home safely from beer night. In other words, volunteer to be the designated driver.

Hi Green! I hope you make the decision that's right for you!

I just wanted to share my recent experience. After eating right for 4 weeks, we went to Vegas last weekend. What started as low-carb beer, ended up as pina coladas by the pool, margaritas at the tables, and any food that happened to be close. I started induction again Monday. During my first induction period, it took my less than 2 days to get into ketosis. This week, it took me 4 days! I definitely had a great time last weekend, but that 2 and half days set me back about 2 and half weeks! If I could go back, I definitely won't do it again. Enjoy the time with your family, and like I said, do what's right for you!

Take a centrifuge with you and use it on your beer before drinking. That way, you'll precipitate the carbs and have carb-free beer. After tasting it, all of your beer cravings will go away.

Or have what you Americans call "hard liquor". No carbs, even if plenty of calories.

I used to claim to be a Designated Driver when I quit drinking before and would get free sodas at some places.

Eric Eric Eric...lolz...that darn karma anyway!!!!! Having a drink in your hand does not make you one of the boys. Either they really are going out for a 'few' beer in which case why bother to wreck you 2 weeks of induction...all that hard work...just for a couple of beer? Or they are really going out to get smashed...in which case they will need a driver and if you drank along side of them then basically you would be saying that you aren't worth all the work you have done up to this point. That the booze and 'being one of the boys' is more important. It is one night Eric...if they get Sh**faced they won't remember how much you did or didn't drink. You are going to blow it all for one stinking night? Blow 2 weeks and your health so you can drink for a few hours...nah! You are worth more than that. You are stronger than that. You are a leader. I believe in you!

I went out for 'drinks' after work today. If this was six months ago, I'd likely still be there...(7 hours later). I went, I had 2 diet cokes, hardly anyone noticed there wasn't anything in them. No one cared that I didn't drink alcohol - they cared that I went & socialized. PLUS: I'm still in ketosis and looking forward to losing a couple pounds this week

OH, boy. You are talking to me. I love to drink with my friends. One thing that I have learned on this WOE is just how hard of a hangover you can get. The no-carb liquor (vodka, rum) sits like a rock in your stomach and the hangover the next day is unlike any other in my whole life. If you have any plans the next day to visit with friends, it is really hard to drink the vodka and rum, have no other carbs and be able to get out of bed in the morning.

If you do stick to plan, and I think you will, fill yourself up on legal foods before you go. Who can drink a beer when they are stuffed full of an awesome steak dinner?

Ha Ha - I know that is true! Funny, the Dutch serve beer in little ten ounce glasses and a simple walk across the border... well, you know!

I just love the German Dunkels... Will I ever be able to have one again? I know - maintenance, I will try one out.
