  • Favorite Snacks?

Hi Everyone! I started Atkins on Monday and now as the weekend is here I decided that I officially hate pork skins due to a pork skin overdose this week. Would you all mind telling me what your favorite Inductions snacks are??? I would love to get some fresh perspectives. I don't want to do the Atkin's bar as recommended on the website. I checked out the carb content and !!! I don't see that as being an alternative. But I would like to know what other people do for quick snack-a-roos.

    Thanks,
    Sonya

      Re: Favorite Snacks?

i snack on boiled eggs, or big mac in a bowl, or a bit of cheese with some dill pickles, or you can have sugar free jello with real whipped cream (read ingredients to make sure there is no dextrose).. but you could snack on veggies. snap peas, mock danish...remember the thing you are trying to do is curb your cravings, so instead of snacking, why not just spread your meals out...so instead of 3 big ones, have 4 or 5 smaller ones

during the work week, my day usually goes something like this
      breakfast- 2 boiled eggs
      snack- another boiled egg
lunch, caesar salad (bacon, dressing, and shredded cheese, no croutons)
snack 1/2 cup of fresh snap pea pods or snow peas
      supper- pork chop, cauliflower, tomatoes

if im really hungry and feeling like a treat i make a mock danish. but i did that more the first couple of days than i do now. it seems like the less you give into that sweet craving, the less often that i am tempted.

for example, my husband is going to make some cupcakes today with the kids, and i told him to go right ahead because my sugar demon is gone away. i also learned how to make atkins revolutionary rolls lastnight (it's bread out of eggs) and i make a BLT with it..deeelicious!!!

By "peas", Tracyc means snap pea pods.

I like cut-up veggies with a bit of dip (easy enough to make legal dip, there are recipes here). You get the crunch that many people look for in a snack food, you can prep enough veggies and dip to last several days at a time, and there are so many veggies that you can use as snack food that it doesn't take much effort to ward off monotony.

I also like a bit of chicken salad or tuna salad in a crunchy cabbage cup. Epicurious has a number of jazzy, legal (or easily legalized) recipes for both.

Yes, I agree with Tracy and others. What is a snack? Something you used to eat that was salty or sugary or whatever. I think the word snack brings to mind something naughty. Just eat your regular Atkins planned food, but spread it into 4,5 or 6 smaller meals. My snack yesterday was celery cut into small pieces and mixed with 1 Tab Caesar dressing, and 1 OOpsie roll.
                Hope that helps.

Oh, and I presume you mean the "Official Atkins Company website"? Don't forget, the ADBB does not follow that. They are trying to sell as many Atkins products as they can since the good DR. A passed away!
And yeah, forget those pork skins!!! I have been on the plan since early August and never had one, nor do I ever plan to. I am sure most Atkineers have not eaten them either.

I guess pork rinds/skins are popular in other parts of the US (not here in New England). With all the hoopla about these things I finally tracked some down at my gas station. That should have been my first hint at how these things taste. That little bag sat on the counter for weeks torturing Mr. Ski who continually would ask when can we eat them. (He never had them either but hey, he's a guy and it was food! )

So, the day finally came that I opened the bag. OMG...these things are GROSS!!! Took one bite of one and I felt like a little kid with liver stuck in there....don't really want to chew it and looking for a place to spit it out.

Come on you pork rind lovers...you've got to be kidding with these. Sorry, but they were the worst excuse for vacuous food that I've ever tried.

p.s. Mr. Ski ate the whole bag (including the other half of the piece I bit). After finishing them, he looked for something else to eat to "get that awful taste out of my mouth." And I asked, "Why the heck did you eat them???" His reply: "'Cause they were there." Gotta love the guy even if he is a goof.

Geez, I got so caught up with reliving my pork rind experience I forgot to say what I wanted about snacks.

Are many people really snacking on Atkins? I just don't have the hunger anymore which put an end to that searching around for something to eat between meals. Is it just a habit for many?

People just starting induction still have the snack habit and look for snacks so they will not feel deprived. I believe after a couple of weeks especially after the appetite supression kicks in it is a lot easier to kick the snack habit.

Sorry to all the pork rind haters out there but they are a staple in my culture aka chicharrones just like beans and tortillas. The fresh ones are actually quite tasty but hard to come by. I do like them (even the ones from the gas station) but I don't eat them too often because the sodium is a killer to my tongue. And for those who wanted me to define "snack", I mean something super quick I can pop in my mouth whenever I don't have time to eat a full or even small meal. As it is for the small meals, I am literally scrambling or boiling eggs in the morning to eat as I drive on my way to work but sometimes I have to look outside the egg because after a week I think I am turning into a raccoon from all the eggs I have been eating. Ps...here where I live we have an egg stealing raccoon. Thanks to those of you who gave me some good snacking ideas...

you can cook eggs ahead of time and put them in the fridge so it's a quick warm up in the morning...or boil a bunch of eggs at the beginning of the week, or cut up some cheese and meat to take with you...watch out for sugar in pork rinds, the ones i found have 1gram for every 15 pieces.

Good posts everyone. Pork Rinds are available everywhere in Texas, where I live. I eat them once in a blue moon, but they are so dry on my tounge. Really good with bean dip which we can't have. I agree with some of the other posters about not needing to snack once you get past induction. If I absolutely feel the need to put something in my mouth, I melt some cheddar/parmesan in a bowl. It's really greasy and filling even with a small amount. Or I have a kosher dill pickle. Sometimes for a snack I have a small salad with oil/vinegar, that way I am sure to get at least that much veggies per day.
