  • a mess, what do I do?

Had an official lunch today... the menu was KFC!!!
Just a few of us but I couldn't find anyway out. What do I do?

    I had a drumstick and a thigh.
    I am absolutely miserable!
I came back home and ran to the comp to check out the nutrition of KFC and I could have died. Seeing the carb content on the breading. about 22g (from Calorie Guide for Kentucky Fried Chicken by FastFood.com)

I had about 10g net carbs veggies in the morning

I think my hard work of the last week has come undone. What do I do now? Will I be able to continue with induction for the next 2 weeks till 18th or have I done irrecoverable damage?

Also will I go out of ketosis because of this?

I have decided that I am staying out of office now on for lunch, even though I might seem antisocial for a bit.

Well... you should not eat breading at all, you know. Bread is not allowed in Induction.

    What do I do now?
You just continue. You've learned something. Move on.

Will I be able to continue with induction for the next 2 weeks till 18th or have I done irrecoverable damage?
You haven't done an "irrecoverable damage".

But why do you want to do Induction until the 18th? You have little weight to lose.

Also will I go out of ketosis because of this?
Even if you did go out of ketosis, you'll get back in.

I have decided that I am staying out of office now on for lunch, even though I might seem antisocial for a bit.
Aren't there better choices to make? Breaded meat is clearly a bad one.

You could also bring your own food...

Re: a mess, what do I do?

      Thankyou Georgina.
It was an informal/formal kind of a meeting that we have ocassionally. So I coudldn't pull out and by the time I knew what was on the menu it was too late.

It is a lesson learnt, I think till I am on phase 3 of Atkins, I'll just stick to salads when going out, as its next to impossible to get nutritional value of food here and in our home in india and I may always not have access to induction.
Atleast i can be more careful with salads.
But there were no salads today.

Goodness the salt in KFC is soo much... I just gulped down 16oz of water in one go.

Actually when I signed up at Atkins, and at the point of choosing my phase, i almost thought I was metabolically challenged or something. I am not a heavy eater. But this whole of last year, even being active and eating ok, I couldn't drop even 1 kilo and was also gaining.

My mom thought it was something relating to pregnancy and something hormonal. I was just building up like mad near my hips and on my legs.
It was like someone cut me in half at my waist and stuck another person's hips and legs.

My mom, and me along with my sisters are pear-shaped, so we are heavier on the bottom, but of the four of us, I am the disaster... its been that way for soo long and pregnancy made it worse.

Thats why I got into induction and decided to see how it goes, by the 18th I will have to go to India for 3 weeks and then the real challenge starts. I will post on that later in the forums as thats going to be a huge uphill task and so lost how I am going to handle it.

I might move into OWL, sooner (even before 18th) , but I hope todays disaster has not made too much of a mess .

Part of the learning process my dear. Don't fret about it. You're doing well.
You can try to take the skin off the chicken at KFC but that does not make it perfect. Packing lunches maybe better and perhaps suggesting other places with your colleges where you can eat - subway, burger places.
I agree with G that OWL is going to be the place for you as to gradually turn this into something that you can sustain for a long time.
Hope you have a great day.

Re: a mess, what do I do?

Just a hint...even if you order a salad when you go out, make sure you have your own "safe" salad dressing....the "diet" or "light" salad dressings are almost as bad as regular ones in a restaurant. A tip I've learned and use even at home is to keep my dressing on the side and dunk the salad into the dressing (instead of pouring the dressing over the salad) - I use less dressing, each bite of salad has some dressing on it and my lettuce never gets wilted looking.

If I've converted your weight correctly you have about 12 pounds to loose? When the ladies said to move to OWL and start adding food back it's a good idea, your going to need time to add foods back to your daily meals.

As Georgiana and Liv have said, you have learned a lesson from the KFC meal....move on, move to OWL and start adding food back into your daily meals. Good luck when you go to India.

            Good luck to you.

Re: a mess, what do I do?

              Thankyou liv and imagood1

I will start up on OWL soon, however I think I will finish the induction as I have already started it. One reason being, I am loosing weight and its showing sort of.

I need that to convince my parents and hubbie, what I am doing is working. Then i can be sure when I go down to India on my 3 week vacation, my hubbie will stick with me as things are going to get really next to impossible down there.

Also I wont be able to come online so often for support at that time, if I really need you guys. You all have been so wonderful and supportive and I am soo glad I joined on here.

There is not a single soul I know, who has done or is doing Atkins. So I am up against a lot down here... with the board my only support.

The 3 weeks in India, is going to be a real acid test as I know I will have everyone making fun of me 24/7 and giving me lectures. I mean, they will be shocked when they see I am not eating rice / chapattis or any other carbs. My mom here, is soo certain that in those 3 weeks, I'll bloat to double my current size with eating all the goodies and stuff. We are having a huge number of functions to attend and all that. So this is one reason I think I will stick to induction as long as I am showing weight loss and overall improvement.

It will keep me motivated and strong.. if you know what I mean.

Maybe instead of telling people you are on Atkins you can tell them you are not eating starches or sugars (the whites) but eating low GI vegetables and non processed foods.
Many people will understand that as a sensible way of watching your weight without thinking of the media's incorrect ideas of Atkins which we often have to fight against.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

i believe the best way to keep motivated and strong with this diet is to learn and experience the more you learn and experience with low carb eating the more motivated and strong you will become

i have learned that carbohydrates cause type 2 diabetes , obesity , heart disease , and also very bad for people with IBS and also cause many other illnesses for humans that were not ment to eat them in such large amounts

iv learned that humans have mostly been fat burning metabolisms for over 99% of are entire existence

but i feel for you iv read that Southern India is one of the most unhealthy countries in the world because of there unhealthy high carb diets

The vegetarians of Southern India eat a low-calorie diet very high in carbohydrates and low in protein and fat. They have the shortest lifespan of any society on Earth, and their bodies have an extremely low muscle mass. They are weak and frail, and the children clearly exhibit a failure to thrive. Their heart disease rate is double that of the meat eaters in Northern India. HL Abrams. Vegetarianism: An anthropological/nutritional evaluation. Journal of Applied Nutrition, 1980, 3253-87. The optimal diet for humans can be determined by anthropological research studies that show humans have primarily been meat eaters. Anthropological Research Reveals Human Dietary Requirements for Optimal Health by H. Leon Abrams, Jr., MA, EDS

remember this is just from there diet they have all the potential of any other people to be healthy

Re: a mess, what do I do?

                    thankyou ziggy and Elizellen.

You are right ziggy, we south indians hog on carbs. morning, noon and night. Mainly its rice. I for one, was bought up in dubai, my parents are here and so I am not too fond of rice. My mom on the other hand cannot get through a day without rice. So hence my point.
My mom thinks I am a bit crazy anyways, I love horse riding and horses, again something no south indians , especially women would do. LOL

Then its a natural tendancy for us south indians to put on weight after marriage and kids. Previous genenrations were healthy, as they were more active, however current and coming generations are going to have a host of problems as activity is zilch!.

Elizellen, I shall try your suggestion thankyou. Hope I can convince the whole lot.
