Re: Help with the veggies ......please!!!

Thanks a bunch everyone!!! I'm sooo happy because I think I have figured out fitday. All your suggestions really helped me yesterday. Imagine how thrilled I was when you told me fitday doesn't do net carbs,.....so I probably didn't do too bad yesterday. Today I have a good handle on it....Actually, I'm wondering if I'll even reach 20 net carbs today. I feel much more comfortable with the plan now.

    Again....thank you to all!!!!!

Does your DANDR give grams as the measurement for induction foods? mine says cups not grams so using a scale to measure the food is also not by the book neither.

Besides when one uses cups as the fitday measurement on their foods then they should be eating a cup of the food so they actually get the nutriants eatten that they have recorded for the day.

you will need a 4 cup measurer. just fill it to the 3 cup mark and then add your veggies until you reach the 4 cup mark. pour off the water and you got 1 cup of rinsed off veggies. you can do that with your berries when you get OWL too.
Hey! How come you never gave us that tip before?? That's brilliant!

It does give ounces for some Induction foods.

For vegetables though, cups are mentioned. It doesn't mean cups MUST be used. Dr. Atkins used cups not because there is some magic about 3 cups, but because he thought it will be easier for people to throw veggies in a cup rather than weigh them. As long as one doesn't go over 20 net carbs, with most of them from low glycemic load vegetables from the Acceptable Foods List, one can just as well weigh veggies. And if one eats only greens like lettuce, then one will be above 3 cups.

Are you saying that a "cup" of food in FitDay is measured using the water displacement method? Or are you just saying that if you enter 1 cup of broccoli you need to eat 1 cup of broccoli?

If it's the latter, then you will actually record the correct nutrients if you use weight (grams, ounces...), too.

First time I've heard of that little tip too. Why didn't I think of that?

i'm not disputing you can measure using any thing you want. the OP ask about cups, so I informed her how to use cups for getting an accurate measurement for objects not cup shaped since she didn't want to use a scale.

did you know ounces are also volume measurement not just a weight measurement? 4 ounces is a 1/4th of a cup. there was a editor in the UK who decided to assist readers with the conversions from american measurements to UK measurements and he converted 3 cups of those salad veggies to 24 ounces and from there changed volume ounces to weight gramsin the early UK version of DANDR 2002. you should have seen the posts from the UK folk back in 2003 on this board complaining about all the salad they had to eat and asking how we could possible eat it all.

Yes... I was referring to ounces as a weight measurement. I should have specified this.

2big....your knowledge facinates me! I think the problem is that I'm really retarded when it comes to math. I wouldn't even know where to find the cup to gram conversion ...but I think I do need to know that for using fiday. I wonder what happened to all those people in the UK when they ate all those veggies....did they gain weight? My copy is called The Atkins Essentials so I think your guys are all following a different book. I looked for other Atkins books but couldn't find any around here. I found this at Wal-Mart! I live in Niagara Falls, NY, and contrary to popular belief it's really a sad place...not much here anymore. ok, everyone keep it coming I loveall these ideas and tips! I'm actually getting happy about doing this....

Cinny, next trip to Walmart pick up a small digital kitchen scale. It will weigh your food and you can change the settings to ounces or grams, your choice.
Use that along with your Fitday and you will see things falling in to place.

Use either cups or grams. There's no reason to convert between the two.

That being said, if you really want to see how many grams are in a cup of <insert food>, NutritionData and the USDA database tell you the number of grams in a cup.

                        Nope. You don't have to.

Atkins Essentials is only concerned with the Induction phase of Atkins, so it will not be enough for you. The book we follow here is Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002). It covers all four phases of the diet and it explains in detail its why's and how's.

I looked for other Atkins books but couldn't find any around here.
                        Did you try online?

those folk got a specail section here so we could teach them about the correct way to do atkins and just about all the mods posted to newbies who were not from the US about that darn UK error and the fact that UK nutrtional paneks have the fiber already removed so total carbs is net carbs on their packages.

I used to live near Niagra falls back when they dammed the Falls to fix the errosion issues. Boy was that fun to see them make the earthen dam. We moved the yr they got OJ and became a good football team again grrrrrrrrrrr.

I'm gonna check on line for this edition. Maybe that's why I'm so darn confused.....I'm a bit of a perfectionist and just can't let things go.
Just entered food fo today in fitday and I've only had 9.13 net carbs. I don't think i can eat any more. I've had three meals today and I feel good. That's what I love about Atkins is I'm usually never hungry. It's amazing! I guess now that I know how to do it, I'll have to eat more veggies which is not a problem. I was still a little squimish when I saw I'm up to 1600 calories but I know I shouldn't even look at that. Old Habits.......lol...... Cin

Well, you do not HAVE to have 20 carbs a day. That's the max you should be striving for in induction. Some days are higher than others. Just keep on keepin on!
