Am I included among the "2 laymen"? Because if I am, my reply wasn't "contradicting" the OP.

I wrote that we do not know if Dr. Atkins meant Induction in his interview, since Atkins is more than Induction. This was a comment to what you wrote, so that people don't have the wrong impression that Dr. Atkins recommended Induction for that kid. Maybe it was Induction he had in mind, maybe it wasn't. We don't know.

Then I said that from what Dr. Atkins himself wrote, my understanding is that at the Atkins Center they weren't using Induction for children. This was an addition to the first paragraph in my reply and it is not "contradicting" anyone.

      Re: Doing well!

Hi there! I just wanted to add the experience of both myself and my own kids, Atkineers one and all.

I began Atkins at the age of 14 (induction and all--and the '72 plan!) and thrived. I ate healthfully, slimmed down, and never suffered any problems as a result of being a teenaged Atkineer. My father so blessed me with the gift of Atkins.

Now my four kids are third generation Atkineers! Aged 8-17, all of them have slimmed down healthfully, while enjoying grass fed beef, organic fruits and veggies and hormone free dairy. We have a great time, love our food, and have so much energy now! My kids have followed induction with no trepidations whatsoever. It hasn't been a problem at all. In fact, they love veggies and meat and fat! I haven't seen them healthier happier and more mentally acute.

Really, it is a gift to start kids out in life with the aminos that keep their brains happy (seratonin) without poisinging them with grains and high fructose corn syrup. It is not often you hear the words, "we're three generations of Atkins fans" but we are! Thank you, Dr. A!

We also have a teens forum here for Atkins kiddos. You might want to check it out!

Your kids are lucky that you're giving them the gift of Atkins, too!

      Go Atkins moms!

        Re: Doing well!

Teenagers are notoriously poor eaters and will grab a pizza and a coke and call that a meal. Give me a break, if they eat as they are suppose to on Induction, they will be 10 times better eaters than their peers.

He didn't say Induction though... just "Atkins". We know from Atkins for Life that one does not have to start Atkins with Induction.
I would think that when the good doctor said Atkins, he meant the whole, not some of its parts, and if he meant some it's parts, he would have indicated which.

Here are Dr Atkins words from the show.

          KING: Dayton, Ohio, hello.

CALLER: Hi. I have a 13-year-old daughter and I was
wondering how safe it would be for her to be on the diet?

ATKINS: I'm so glad you asked. Absolutely. As a matter of
fact, children who are overweight should start on the low
carbohydrate lifestyle as soon as they become overweight so
they don't get into these bad habits. But at the age of 13,
it is absolutely mandatory. How overweight is she?

CALLER: Oh, about 15 to 20 pounds.

ATKINS: Well, that's an easy thing. That means you should
be able to get her back to her ideal weight within five or
          six weeks.

          KING: Really?

          ATKINS: Right.
there can be no doubt he meant the weight loss phases 0f his plan. If he didn't he would not have said those pounds would be gone in 5-6 weeks eating the maintenance phase.
and there is no way he would have opened himself up for a lawsuit anwsering yes to the Mother's question about her 13 yr old and safety on his diet if he had meant only a very specific phase of his diet plan.

Woohoo! You rock, 2big and Lynne!

I thrived as a teen on Atkins induction. No acne? For a teen? AMAZING. I was constantly complimented for having such beautiful skin and hair and nails. My sister started Atkins as a 12 year old. And remember--this was Atkins '72. No issues there either. We were able to slim down effortlessly thanks to the efforts of our parents.

              Re: Doing well!

              Hi All,

thankyou all for your input!....it seems I may have opened a can of works...oops!

Well....all I can say is that my daughter is doing really well. She had a slight wobble on Sunday and was feeling all deprived as she wanted crisps. We managed to keep her on track and she is remotivated after her weekly weigh in where she lost 9lb!!!

This is the longest she has ever stuck to any programme.

This is basically a last resort to try and find something to motivate her. She has even been to a well known weight loss camp which holds camps here in the UK once a year. The basis of this was a low fat diet, and despite us spending thousands of pounds to try and help her which we could ill afford, she piled it all back on after plus loads more. With her the issue isn't just her size as she is 194lb and 5' 4". Her main issue is self esteem, hiding and stealing food, mood swings, etc. She feels so bad and guilty about what she eats that we cop it BIG time with her stresses!

So...I'm not sure how long she will stick it out but one more week of induction and then she can start OWL. For however long she can stay motivated, we can only support her and guide her through...after all it was her idea as she saw what I was eating and wanted to join in!!

Thankyou all again for your advice and support x

                Re: Doing well!

Good to hear she is still enjoying Atkins and is seeing some weightloss progress to keep her interested

It is also good to know that she is doing it by choice, as that is the only way people really change their way of eating for good. Does she participate in the planning, choosing, buying and cooking of menus? Being in control of one's intake is the best way to feel enabled rather than just following what someone else is deciding as well as making it easier to resist 'temptations' by being able to say 'I choose not to eat xxx' instead of 'I can't eat xxx'.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Have her look thru some of LInda's recipes when she get feeling deprived Pizza is a good motivator and she has some great recipes filled with cheese that would comfort anyone.

Its hard for kids, but low fat would be the worst I would think.

                    Re: Doing well!

I applaud you for providing her with a healthy way to eat and feel good about herself.

I remember being 16 and my mother taking me to the doctor to lose some weight. I at that time had about 35 pounds to lose. The doctor looked at me and his exact words were "Stop eating so much food", no words of encouragement or a diet to follow.

                    Keep up the great work!!!

                      good job

I'd move her to OWL right now if she is in ketosis and enjoying her foods but wanting things. there is no magic in the 14 days it was just to demonstart it would work and detox from all the addictied stuff. with 9 pounds gone she is already not metabolically ressitant and as the frist step in OWL is 5 more net grams of those yummy induction veggies.

your crips are our french fries and you can make her some from cauliflower if she likes it, you can even make her hasbrowns from zuchinni, jicama or radishes

                        Hi All,

Elizellen...I'm finding that I'm eating around her choices really as she doesn't like meat that much but we are managing to keep things varied with fish and 'dressed up' veggies! She is eating 100% more veggies than ever before.

I bought 1000 recipes off ebay which had given us some ideas, plus the millions of recipes on here!

Yeah...might move her on to OWL as she having a bit of a struggle at the moment.

                        Cheers again guys x

Oh..bye the way...9lbs now for me too but it took me 2 weeks. Managed to lose 2lbs despite TOM impending which is a miracle in itself(usually put on 7lbs!!). Still amazing resolve and absolutely no cravings. Even going to McD's for a black coffee instead of my usual latte!

if your kid is a vegetarian check out how to do Atkins as a vegitarian. Missy99 was in communication with Dr Atkins medical center back in 2003 when she was doing it and the food lists they gave her are in our stickies. She could have bocca burgers and tofu as her protein sources until she gets to the nuts/seeds of OWl or rung 6 legumes.
