  • Salad Dressing Question

I'm on day 12 of induction. Feeling great and discovering new ways to make old favorites - minus the carbs but not the flavor. For the most part, I've been making my own salad dressings - either saving my heavy cream allotment for the dressings or doing good old oil and vinegar.

My question though... I keep seeing people mention store bought salad dressings that they are using. I've seen mention of Ken's and HVR but every brand I've checked (and I mean every) has sugar or corn syrup. In some cases it's way down on the ingredient list but there nonetheless. Am I missing something?

I ordered the Walden Farms to keep at work but I just saw an old thread that said it tasted like Milk of Magnesia. They are however truly sugarfree. So, any other legal off the shelf dressings? I know I can continue making my own but there are times at work where I'm truly eating dry salad because I've forgotten my dressing at home.

    Re: Salad Dressing Question

in chapter 11 of DANDR Dr Atkins make s a specail rule for prepared salad dressings and it says without added sugar no more then 2 grams of carbs per tablespoon serving. Lighthouse has a no added sugar dressing in the refigerator section.

Marie's bleu cheese is supposed to be carb free per serving according to posts I've seen.

      Re: Salad Dressing Question

Walden Farms isn't in my home or eve will be again - check the ingredients, there is nothin real in the bottle and the taste isn't good. Many people use their products but I prefer Hidden Valley Ranch or Caesar dressing. Like 2big said above, as long as it has no more than 2 grams of carb per tablespoon you can use it. I put my dressing on the side and dip the salad into it -- I use less dressing and every bite has dressing on it.

        Re: Salad Dressing Question

I make my own dressing, put it in a bottle, and keep it in the office frig. My coworkers don't touch it because they think I mix in too much vinegar or lemon juice. So it's too sour for them.

          Re: Salad Dressing Question

So for those of you using Hidden Valley Ranch (HVR) - I still see sugar on the ingredients list. Saw the same for the Marie's as well.
I saw that HVR had 2g carb per 2 Tbs but that sugar was there (don't remember where on the list). Does the carb count make it ok even though there's sugar (didn't think so but I'm open to your advice).

And yes, I've seen the horrible feedback on the Walden's Farms. Ordered it already so we'll se what happens.

          Thanks!

            Re: Salad Dressing Question

I have been using "Maple Brand Farms from Vermont" Sugar Free Salad Dressings. They are sweetened with Splenda and have less than 1g carbs per 2 tbsp. I read the label today and it shows sugar in the dressing, but an insignificant amount and is actually sweetened with Splenda.

Well I found some in Whole Foods tonight (along with some other goodies) so I'll give them a try over the coming weeks. I think one was Anne's or Annie's (sorry, not in the kitchen) and I don't remember what the other was.

              Thanks for your help.

                How about this one?
It is in the refrigerator section. It is pretty tasty.

Sugar is #9 on the list, and corn syrup #18. This is the best store bought Caesar I seem to be able to find.

                  Re: Salad Dressing Question

I use Marie's Chunky Blue Cheese. It is usually found in the produce section, not in with all the dressings. There is no sugar in it. That is pretty much all I use, and all I have used since I have been on Atkins and I haven't had a problem with it.

I also found that a local restaurant here sells salad dressing in the grocery store. That didn't have sugar in it either. I had to really search but did find another brand (sorry I don't recall what it was) that had an Italian dressing with no sugar in it.

So far, I have not dabbled with making my own but I might do that just for something new.

Thanks but Mission - is that legal? I know it's way down on the list but I thought I was to avoid sugar & corn syrup period. - I think that's what is confusing me. Thoughts?

Whatsername - you know, I picked up several Marie's and never looked at the blue cheese (which oddly is my favorite). I'll take a look at that later.

I was looking for the ingredients on their website (Marie's), but they don't show it. I was wondering if they have any forms of sugar in the ingredients.

                      Marzetti's website shows the ingredients.

I guess I will have to check at the store and look at the label.

Marzetti Caesar has 1 carb, but added sugar, corn syrup, added, although way down the list. I am a real Caesar dressing fan. Bleu Cheese --second.

No I guess after thinking over a second time, it is not legal because there IS
added sugar. I guess I was confusing myself thinking it was ok since the sugars are way down the list, but I think that is incorrect on my part.

                          Re: Salad Dressing Question

For those not familiar (yet ) with US labels... if the ingredients in a dressing have carbs, the dressing will have carbs, too. This holds true regardless of what the nutritional info on the package says, because if the carbs are less than 0.5 g per serving, they will be rounded to 0.

If you eat one serving, the difference it will make in your daily net carb intake is tiny. But if you eat several servings, the carbs will add up... so they might not be "zero" (that is, less than 0.5 g) anymore.

Thanks Georgiana. I pretty much just assume 1 carb for things that say 0 carbs. I know I look like a nut in the grocery store inspecting every label but what do you do? Waste a lot of money assuming things are safe (checking the label at home). In the end it's all worth it because I can feel the difference in my body even though I haven't weighed in for the week (plus I got a compliment from someone who doesn't know I've changed my WOE - the "did you lose weight" that we all wait for). The best positive reinforcement ever.

You're not a nut for reading labels----you're a careful shopper and that's terrific!

A few years ago when the low carb craze was in full swing, a refrigerated salad dressing brand had a low carb version. It was about a dollar more expensive than the regular dressing and it held about 3 ounces less. So I compared the labels. Both had the same number of cals, protein, fat, and carbs. And the ingredients were the same too. ( <----what the manufacturer was doing to everyone who bought that low carb dressing. )

So keep reading those labels! Even for products you use normally because occasionally the nutritional info or ingredients change.
