  • Too MANY calories??

    Hi all.

I did atkins years ago, with my mother. I hadn't had children then, and I wasn't rounding the 30 post back then either. I had great success, but when I got married and then pregnant, I left low carb behind. (after all, what pregnant girl shouldn't indulge in oreoes every day??) Yikes, now 3 kids and 5 years later, I'm 50 lbs heaver than when I got married.

I want to do atkins again, and I'm on day 2 of induction. I'm finding some things have changed, or maybe I just didn't know them before. Mom had the book, and I just followed her lead.

Anyways, I totalled up my food on fitday yesterday to keep track of my carbs and found that I'd eaten 2000 calories. That seems like a lot to me. I followed the rules, no cheating.

Today I'm already up to 1500 and I still need to eat dinner.

I'm 5'4, weigh 157 and I'm 28. Am I consuming too many calories? If I am, I want to figure out a way to eat fewer calories. I don't want to screw this up and have to redo my whole induction, haha.

I dug around on here but I could only find posts about people concerned they were eating too few calories. (lol!)

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Re: Too MANY calories??

From what I have experienced, when I eat too many calories, I do not lose, although I have eaten all legal foods and stayed in ketosis. I do not gain either. When I lower my calories, listen to my body, and eat to satiety, I then lose. However, everyone is different.

I always find that, when first starting out with Atkins Induction, I eat more calories. Then, after a couple of weeks, I naturally begin consuming less. Part of that lovely ketosis appetite supression I guess. Also, I feel full faster.

        Re: Too MANY calories??

I'm not eating until I'm stuffed... thats the hard part. I'm eating a sensible breakfast. scrambled eggs with cheese yesterday, scrambled eggs with 3 pieces of bacon today. For lunch both days I made a big salad with romaine, fresh spinach, a few sprinkles of parm cheese, about 2 oz of chicken breast, a sprinkle of bacon bits and some *real* ranch dressing. For dinner last night, I had a steak, broccoli and a salad. For dinner tonight I'm planning on egg salad and a veggie. For snacks, I do a handful of olives, a little bit of of cheese or a hard boiled egg.

I feel like I'm staying on target and I'm definitely not stuffing myself... I'm not letting myself feel hungry or full...

You need to have your own copy of the Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002).

          carbs
          Net or total carbs?

          I'd eaten 2000 calories.
Are you hungry for 2000 calories? If you are, then you should be fine.

You might want to post a complete menu and let us take a look at it. Please include quantities and net carbs for all foods.

If I happen to come across a used copy, then I'll snatch it up... but so far I'm just doing careful reading on the atkins website.

I'll work on getting my menu up tonight. Thanks!

Well, it's not the best source. Their Acceptable Foods List is not correct, for example.

when you first start you will be eatting more then you will once your appetite suppression hits as you progress with your ketosis.

then just feed your hunger and stop each time you feed. It might take just one egg for breakfast some days. listen to your body and feed your hunger and you will be fine.

                    Re: Too MANY calories??

I just assumed that the actual atkins website would have the most up to date information on the diet. I don't understand why they'd publish that information if it wasn't correct?

I can't buy one online though.

Well, I have 3 kids, so chasing them, haha!

We actually do dancing at night after dinner. Turn on the music and dance our little hearts out. (I have 3 little girls). I try to get some aerobic moves in during that. Once or twice a week I make it to my treadmill and do about 45 minutes of hard core walking. When it warms up a bit, I'll take back up with walking to the park (a little over a mile) every day.

For example, string beans are among the Induction vegetables in the book, yet they do not appear in the Atkins.com. Other vegetables that appear in book but are not on the Atkins.com list are mache, sorrel, scallions, dandelion, bean sprouts and beet greens.

Pay attention to the fact that the peas mentioned on the Acceptable Foods List at Atkins.com are with pods. DANDR refers to them as snow peas. And in DANDR 2002, avocado is listed under "Special Category Foods," not under vegetables; this makes sense since avocado is, after all, a fruit. Olives are also not vegetables in the book, but "special" foods; they are limited to 20 daily.

Although this is not mentioned on the Acceptable Foods List at Atkins.com, sour cream is limited to 1 oz (about 2 tbs). This appears in the book.

Also... organ meats are limited to 4 oz. Same holds for mussels and oysters.

Some carb counts on the Acceptable Foods List at Atkins.com are incorrect. For example, 1/4 cup of cheddar, diced (33 g) has 0.42 net carbs, and 1/4 cup of cheddar, shredded (28.25 g) has 0.36 net carbs. So the carbs are NOT zero.

Eggs and mayonnaise DO have carbs, although the list says 0 net carbs.

All spices have carbs as well: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ts-spices.html

Among the beverages allowed, things like cream, tea or coffee also have carbs, so make sure you count them towards your tally. As a beverage, cream (heavy or light) is limited to 3 tbs.

Lemon juice is limited to 2-3 tbs per day (and of course, it has some carbs).

And if you download the PDF list available at Atkins.com, you will see beets listed there. Beets are NOT acceptable during Induction. Beet greens are, but not beets.
