  • Confused about simple things !!!

    1st meal on induction, not going so well....

    2 eggs, fried w/1pat butter (5.36 or 1.2 ? )
    1/2 c fresh mushrooms (1.4 g)
    1/8 c cheddar cheese (.07)

    When I looked up eggs on hidden carb diet tools it told me 5.36 for two eggs but Atkins carb gram counter says .6 each? I am sooo confused. This is a huge difference and I need to get it right.

    How many carbs would you put in for this meal?

    Would you total up the carb grams and then round up or round up each ingredient?

    Okay... I suggest you stop using that hidden carb calculator, because you're only confusing yourself.

    Look up the nutritional info for an egg in the USDA database. That's accurate.



    You can use FitDay to track your foods. It uses the USDA database.

    Choose a carb counter you like... and stick to that.

    Since I only buy whole foods (no low carb bread, tortillas, etc.), I never needed to use a hidden carbs calculator.

    I'm nerdy, so I calculate my daily carbs with a two decimal point precision.

      Don't forget to count NET CARBS, not total carbs.
      Net carbs=total carbs-fibre.

        Thanks! I didn't think one of the main staples of Atkins would be confusing. I decided to stick with the Atkins book. My meal came to 3 grams. Much better than I had feared........and with that I finished off with my first 2 ounces of water. WooHoo

              Also just in case you did not know - stay away from pregrated cheese - contains starches.

                Liv -- Thanks for a heads up on the pre-grated cheese. Never occurred to me to look and I used it all the time before.


                Julie B -- The picture actually looks like a backwards age progression -- after seeing your pic I took a face-only shot for my records. Hope to see the same "fountain of youth" ! lol

                  ok, i don't understand what i'm doing wrong.

                  Atkins bar states 2 net carbs
                  After eating it i was looking at the label
                  22 carbs - 10 dietary fiber = 12 net carbs

                  how do they come up with 2 net carbs? what am i missing?

                    quick put down the bar and run from it.

                    that 2 on the front says 2 net effective carbs not 2 net carbs.

                    those are called frankenfoods with the mythical magical noncounted counting carbs. Some studies have been done that show that for regular weight folk those carbs don't effect the blood work within the normal 2 hours testing. However becuase those carbs are slower digested you will get a spike when your body does digest them so count them all and use the net carb 12 from the nutrtional label that the FDA told atkins nutrtionals NO for putting things like hydrogenated starches sugar alcohols and glycerine in the fiber totals.

                      You're missing a sweetener/filler called glycerine. The Atkins company does not count the carbs on in on the front of the package but they have to do it on the label (because that is what the FDA ordered them to do)


                      BUT - be aware that it contains what we would consider illegal ingredients for induction and also many find that it stalls their weightloss. So be careful. Stick to whole foods as much as you can.

                        Lovely, and I was doing good for a 1st day. It killed my sweet craving but it wasn't worth 12 carbs! Ugh

                        However I am down 3 lbs. in first day. I know it's water weight, but it still feels good to be under 200.

                          The bar wasn't 12 carbs though ... the count on the front of the package is correct.

                            Since your doc doesn't say "I know you have X number of water pounds in that scale number so I'll just remove them from your weight I chart" be proud of each and every pound you shed doing your atkins.

                              Could you explain in more detail why the pregrated cheeses should be avoided. I've got four of them sitting in my fridge right now.

                              Luckily, I'm not big on cheese and have hardly had any of it.
