  • I need some real help....

    Hi,

    I am a newb to atkins diet.
    I am male, weighing about 240lb 5foot 11.
    i want to lose 40lb in next 3 months.

    so i have started atkins diet.
    This is my 8th day of induction.
    I have been trying hard and i am so determined to lose weight.

    This is what i have been eating for past 1 week.

    * Beef steak (different kinds)
    * Cabbages
    * Lettuce
    * Chicken Fillet
    * Grilled Whole Chicken from Metro (removed skin)
    * Lots of mushroom
    * Lots of water
    * beans (not too much)
    * Broccoli
    * Lots of chicken wings
    * one Brussel.
    * Eggs

    now this is about everything i ate last 1 week.
    It looks like i am losing weight as i lost weight around my chin
    but when i go on scale i didnt lose any weight.

    I didnt exercise but i tried to walk everywhere i go.
    Today i wanted to see if i am in ketosis so i bought ths stick
    and it did not turn into any color.

    i didnt test myself in the morning, i ate chicken+mushroom + water.
    can that dilute my ketones????

    I am sure i was in ketosis by day 3 or 4.
    beacuse my breath was bad and i was waking up in the middle of the night.

    I didnt eat much out of ordinary except at one point i tried this sauce
    and i think it had sugar in it so i didnt try it any more. i only tried like a tiny tiny drop of it. Can that take me out of ketosis?

    Or Hot Sauce for chicken wing at St.Louis Bar has sugar in it? it was just hot sauce.....

    I am really frustrated, its day 8, i dont think i lost much weight, ketostix shows negative... am i doing something wrong... i am really tired (literally) but i dont want to give up..

    **Can tiny bit of sugar by mistake kick me out of ketosis....

    unless you are metabolically resitant no a tiny bit of sugar will not kick you out of ketosis.
    I have to ask since atkins is a ketogenic diet where ar eyour fats? I doubt you got 65% of your cals from fat with that list of food unless you ate a lot of chicken wings.

    You need to list amounts for folk to know if you are over eatting anything on your Atkins.

    That said relax stix do not tell the true story of atkins ketosis since they only measure one type of ketone body and that is the same type we use for energy production.

    Congrats on getting your exercise going with all that walking. DO you have a pedometer so you know about how far you go? if so come join the ADBB pre4s challenge and have some fun counting your exercise.

      I hope you realize that Atkins isn't a quick fix, but a way of eating for life.

      Scheduling your weight loss rarely works, so don't be disappointed if you don't lose 40 lbs in 3 months. That's almost 1/2 lbs per day, every day... and there can be days, weeks or months with no weight loss.

          I am not really sure how much i am eating, but i really dont eat too much.

          I try to eat 3 times daily, i am a student living by myself so i actually find it hard to cook variety of food and get it regularly but i try to eat chicken throughout the day.

          I like to eat chicken and beef steak as well as eggs and pork rashers.
          however i am used to eating healthy so i tend not to eat too much fat but try to eat more chicken and lean beef.

          am i doing it completely wrong.. should i be eating more fatty stuff?

          basically through out a day

          9am - 2eggs, cup or two of beans or any veg i have (usually brocolli cabbage or lettuce) and chunk of chicken thigh

          1pm - whole chicken (just grilled chicken with sauce (lots of sodium, i just checked) but i remove the skin so probably not much sauce on them.

          5~6pm - beef steak or chicken (like wings or thighs.. here and there) + vegs again.

          i drink lots of water...
          usually my mean plan is as above.
          i try to eat regularly because i dont want to miss a meal.

            yea, its just fresh meat, i cook it with bit of pepper.

            and for the chicken i buy from metro,

            it's just grilled chicken with this spicy sauce on them

            but i just checked at the back of it and it has 0g for everything except sodium was at like 200.

            but i remove skin so i dont think i really consume it.

              yep you are doing it wrong. atkins is a high fat moderate protein and low carb eating plan.

              Try plugging your foods into something like fitday.com for free on the net and see if 65% of your cals are from fats. I think you are going to find you are too low fat for atkins.

                Most of the chickens are injected with flavorings so the sauces aren't on the outside but inside too. Does it actually have a list of ingredients, you can't go by the nutrition label. Also on Atkins you eat the skin, it has the fat you need in it.

                Many hot sauce/wing sauces do contain sugars so again that would need to be checked.

                Also by beans do you mean like brown beans? Beans are not an induction food. It sounds like with a little tweaking you'll be back on track and see that scale moving down.

                  wow, i really didnt know that. i thought the whole point was at consuming less carbs and more meat.

                  If it is okay, could you tell me some of the things i should be eating? what kind of meat should i consume? i can't cook meals, i would rather just fry or grill meat and eat it with veg as i have no time and tend to get lazy when i have to cook.. i dont want to give up though..

                  also can i exercise? like 30min of cardio with 30min of weight training? i used to do that every day before i started atkins.

                    Exercise is an important part of Atkins, keep it up. Do you have the 2002 book? If not there are links here to what you can eat. Let me see if I can pull them up for you.

                      i just had that grilled chicken again and i think so too. I am not sure what the ingredients are but i just checked the labelling.. it was just regular chicken bbq spices.

                      I shouldnt have eaten those chicken wings with that hot sauce then...

                      i really didnt eat much beans, it was like one day. i eat more steamed cabbage and lettuce....

                          I have 3 different BBQ rubs in my cabinet, all have sugar in them so they are all off limits until I find one without sugar or make my own. I think just about anything BBQ you buy commerically made is going to have sugar for that sweet/tangy taste.

                          Maybe try cutting it out and adding in your fresh cooked chicken or beef. You can prepare it ahead of time so you aren't spending all your time cooking. I like chopping my steak or chicken and putting it in sandwich bags. Then when I make a salad I just grab out a bag of meat and toss it on top.

                            What are you using as a source for how to follow the Atkins plan...?
                            It sounds like you may not have all the info you need.

                              since you are jerking the fat off your cooked chicken and I understand why you need to add fat back and maybe add some to your veggies. We don't add cups of fat but a teaspoon here and a teaspoon there and by the end of the day you got enough healthy fats, moderate proteins and low carb veggies to be a legal atkinseer.

                              You can use any nonhydrogenated fat you like everything from butter to a veggie oil is legal. Just make sure it is manufactured in a healthy manner.
