  • The bars are a lie

    Hi:

I visited the supermarket and went to the diet section. I found a box of Atkins bars. The box says that the product is okay for all phases of the Atkins diet. However, I read the ingredients to be certain and there was a potent poison!!! Tapioca STARCH!

I then immediately put the box down without giving a second look.

If the product is okay for induction, then why the @!#%$ does it contain tapioca starch?? Why does it contain any starch?

Lucky for me, I go through the ingredients of anything I buy just to make sure.

My suggestion is to stay away from these bars. They may be tempting. They may appear to be Atkins-friendly, however, they are as toxic as simple sugars. So steer clear!

Re: The bars are a lie

Many of us say this over and over.....the bars and shakes have ingredients that aren't induction legal...regardless of what the Atkins company says -- the company has profit ($$$$$$) in their sights, not our health or well being. They have changed the plan to suit their needs also for making money - that's why we don't go by the "latest & greatest" version they come up with - Dr Atkins put his stamp of approval on the 2002 book - not on what they are doing now.

Good for you reading every label and making sure you aren't ingesting things you shouldn't be!!

While tapioca starch is not an Induction ingredient, I would not call it "toxic".

I don't think sugars are "toxic" either.

And no, I don't recommend products.

Well done for reading the list of ingredients rather than just the other stuff
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

IMHO Since the passing of Dr. Atkins, the company has forgotten all about why he wrote the book and is all about $$$$$.

I refuse to buy any of the their products.

I thought that too until I started exploring atkins.com more thoroughly. I find their message (esp. to newbies) to be confusing as in the tutorials fresh, whole foods are stressed just like in DANDR and on the same page is the link to buy bars/shakes. And the Induction menu planner suggests these products daily as snacks. Two products/day average about 400 calories and a hefty amount of carbs. I can see why newbies eating their required net carbs of veggies PLUS the 2 Atkins products get frustrated with poor weight loss results. And how the heck do you explain "make sure you read the ingredient label and don't eat anything not on the list" when the ingredients in the bars clearly violate that?

ANIs rationale behind the products is to give people options for sweets/candy bars as some people would quit Atkins if they couldn't have these things. Perhaps. I'm of the school of thought that one needs to retrain their palate to get away from such foods. Yes, it's difficult at first but without doing that, the temptation (and likelihood) of returning to a sugar-laden and processed food WOE is high. JMNSHO

Re: The bars are a lie

It's easier for people to continue to have the foods they "crave" in place of changing their palate and finding out how foods really taste. I tried the bars before I started and decided after the 2nd bite they weren't anything I'd be eating again - they tasted dirty and the shakes had a gritty nasty taste....

I never felt I was being deprived of anything eating the Atkins way -- but I hear so many newbies talk about how hard it is to go through induction because they feel deprived....
