I am starting day 4 and was wondering, my mother-in-law is coming over with chinese food. Is there any chinese takeout I am alowed during induction? I am doing pretty well so far and don't want to sabotage the progress I've made. I'm averaging over a pound and a half a day!

Re: Staring day 4-Chinese food?
Chinese food is one of the most difficult types of food to include on Atkins (in any phase). It is often full of sugar, and almost always full of starches (sauce thickeners). Unless I cook it myself, I avoid it (too bad, because I really like it
). If you search these boards, you will find some suggestions for dishes that are less likely to be sugar/starch laden, but it also depends on how you order it (no sauce, sauce on the side, stir-fried in oil only...etc), so if your MIL is doing the ordering...

Re: Staring day 4-Chinese food?
On day four I would make myself something else to eat and enjoy that. Chinese food is not generally easy to deal with. I suggest staying away from it for now.
I like to make fired cauliflower "rice" with ginger so if you want something stir fry like you can make that.

Re: Staring day 4-Chinese food?
I agree with the others, make yourself something 'chinese-y to eat alongside what your MIL brings for everyone else.
Stirfry using grated cauliflower instead of rice sounds a good option to me. I usually grate mine raw then microwave to desired softness than add it to the wok after stirfrying my meat/veggies.
Instead of using a lot of soy sauce (which will probably be wheatbased unless it is the very price-y brand) I add 5-spice powder to toasted sesame oil and sweat that first before adding the meat & other ingredients to get a good chinese-y taste.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: Starting day 4-Chinese food?
I have to agree... Chinese food is the ABSOLUTE HARDEST thing to eat on this WOE. The only way to do it, is cook it yourself. It is unfortunate, because going to eat at a Chinese buffet was my #1 favorite way to eat out. And Chinese takeout -
But both are absolute no-no's for me.
I know how frustrating it can be to be around relatives who are eating something that you love, but cannot eat. My family does it to me all of the time. It was Chinese food once, and more often, it is Italian food.
Wish I had better news for you!

I'm with the others. I STILL don't eat Chinese. I can't. Chinese buffet and takeout are big (fat) reason I had to lose weight in the first place!! Still miss it. Still think about it now and then, but I avoid the heck out of it! I lived in Asia for 2 years growing up and I have to tell myself I got my fill for a lifetime there! Find something delicious and look the other way!

Re: Starting day 4-Chinese food?
Although I am being beaten up
pretty badly for admitting I ate rice rolled sushi (3), 1 crab rangoon and a fortune cookie!, the rest of what I ate was extremely low carb.
First, I went to a buffet that has a raw food bar that they then cook for you. I took celery, mushrooms, bean sprouts, shrimp, scallops and beef. I had them cook it with water and chicken broth and then add a tomato-based hot paste (for the sweat factor) The rest I got off of the salad bar and a very select few items from the rest of the buffet (greenbeans and cheese-stuffed mushrooms) based on their nakedness (no sauce or breading) no noodles, no wantons, etc. Hot and sour soup is great.
Could I have left out the sushi...yupp! It was a choice I made and was prepared to live with. It was into the 4th week, and...and... I faltered! I was bad, I should be punished, any good spankers out there!
All that being said, if someone is bringing Chinese food to you from the buffet, unless they are on Atkins too (and maybe not even then) I would pass.

Well done for not falling into the trap of 'I ought to eat it in order not to offend'

Egg foo young (yong?) that you make yourself is okay (basically an omelette with meat and a couple of bamboo shoots. Pretty tasty. Tell them no rice on the side an no gravy. Also, ask the rest. to make sure they put NO corn starch in it although they normally don't add any to the egg-foo-young itself, but to the accompanying gravy.Ht: 5' 3/8" (kidding about the 3/8ths)
