  • Quick Something Before GYM Workout

    Wondering if anyone can give ideas for something quick - nothing big I can have before going to the gym in the mornings. I'm on Induction - just starting 2nd week. Atkins Shake is out since it's not really for Induction.

    Also, really don't like eating that early in the AM - I'll have my breakfast when I get back.

    The shake would probably be your best bet, then.

      You could make the 'egg-nog shake' which has a whole long thread in the 'exrended induction' forum if you feel the need for something before you exercise.
      As far as I know it seems to hhve a better fat content than most of the commercial shakes which tend to be too high in protein for Atkins
      Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

        I don't know how long your workout is. But I often have a split breakfast. I cannot eat too much before working out or I feel not to good. On induction I very common just have a boiled. It usually keeps me going throughout the workout and fine till it is time to have the rest of the breakfast. I keep my boiled eggs in the fridge for easy eating.

        Once you creep up rungs you can other small things like nuts or cottage cheese.

          Thanks Everyone
          I'll try your suggestions. As far as the Atkins shake, I've read that if you've "stalled" or slowed down and are drinking the shakes or eating the bars, it could be that is the culprit. So, for now, I'll forgo the Atkins drinks and snacks.

          I can certainly do the hard boiled egg and I'll check the Eggnog shake.

              why do you need to eat before you hit the gym? as an atkinseer you should be burning body fats any ways. All you need is to hydrate.

                Like Liv, I don't feel well if I eat too much before I work out. Eggs are a definite no-no for me though...I usually eat a piece (about an ounce) of cheese if I need something before my workout.

                  I usually need something before exercising but it has to be small for me one of those egg nog shakes would be too rich. A piece of cheese may work yes.

                    I can't eat before working out or I am ill the whole time I work out and end up cutting my work outs short because I feel crappy. I am usually starving after working out, even if I have eaten before so I usually just wait.

                    But if you have to eat maybe try a little bit of chicken or turkey dipped in mayo. That is my go to snack. I get my protein and fat in that way.

                      Hi there,

                      I've found that a cup of coffee with a splash of cream gives me enough energy (and a few calories to go on) to get through a good workout. Makes the meal afterwards that much better, too! I used to eat an apple (pre-Atkins) beforehand, and coffee with skim milk, but I've found this new plan works even better.

                      Any more food than that (if doing a morning workout) and I feel slow, sick and crampy.

                      If doing a more hardcore very heavy weight workout I might have an egg 30 minutes before as well. Feeling weak while lifting is terrible. Cardio performance, on the other hand, seems to get better when I have nothing in me.

                      Just my experience. Hope you find something that works for you.

                        Thanks, but what may be good for some isn't for others. For various reasons, I don't have a lot of energy, and I find I get a bit better workout if I have "something" before the workout and a protein meal after the workout. That's why I did the Atkins shake before around 6 AM, and hit the gym. Today I had a hard boiled egg and then tried the Egg Nog Shake when I got back.

                            Actually, not bad. Didn't sleep well last night (or for that matter, the past 3 nights), so my energy level is quite low. But beyond that, with the hard boiled egg before, 35 minutes on treadmill and 45 min weights and strength training - I got through it and had the egg nog shake when I got home.

                            Wasn't as gross as I thought it would be and it is certainly filling. I put too many ice cubes in it - it almost turned into a slushy! Good though.

                              Glad your workout went well and you stayed with your induction eating. Sounds like you psyched your body out with the eating and hitting the gym since the egg isn't even digested if you swallow it and hit the gym. you are basically working out on what your already had in your body before you ate from the previous meals you ate and your body stores. That is why low carbers don't need to nor can they fuel up immediately before or after a workout.

                              after the workout the shake immediately rehydrates the atkinseer and then slowly digests over the course of several hours providing amino acids and fats to be reacted to make fuels.
