  • Hormel Natural Deli Meat

    Hi,

I am new here and you can read my introduction on the spotlight forum section. I do have to the book but I had a question about deli meat. I really like deli meat and I found some with no preservatives or nitrates, its the Hormel Natural brand. I was wondering...would this be okay to snack on?

    Thanks in advance

Based on the ingredients of the turkey:

All Natural Ingredients - No MSG Added - No Artificial Flavors or Colors - Gluten Free - Minimally Processed Ingredients: Turkey Breast Meat, Water, Salt, Turbinado Sugar, Carrageenan (from seaweed), Baking Soda, Natural Flavoring, Lactic Acid Starter Culture (not from Milk)

      there's still sugar in them.

      The roast beef:

After Cooking, Contains Up to 14% of a Solution++ Natural Caramel Color Added ++Solution Ingredients: Water, Salt, Turbinado Sugar, Baking Soda, Natural Flavoring.

      the chicken breast:

Ingredients: Chicken Breast Meat, Water, Salt, Turbinado Sugar, Carrageenan, Natural Cure (Celery Powder, Sea Salt, Lactic Acid Starter Culture), Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

      one of the hams:

After Cooking, Contains Up to 22% of a Solution++ No Nitrate or Nitrite Added - All Natural Ingredients ++Solution Ingredients: Water, Salt, Turbinado Sugar, Natural Flavor, Lactic Acid Starter Culture (not from Milk).

Yes ... they don't have any nitrates, but...

I presume that the "honey" and the "turbinado sugar" were red flags for you!

Buy a real turkey ... or a turkey breast ... and cook it yourself.

                That's right.

As I suggested, you can buy turkey and cook it yourself.

                    Re: Hormel Natural Deli Meat

It seems a lot of people here buy their ham/bacon/deli meat etc. from supermarkets. Why, don't you have local butchers? they usually smoke the deli meats on the premises and have no need for nitrates, and they will tell you if there are any sugars. eg. My butcher simply told me to stay away from the honey lamb and sweet chilli sausages, the rest were sugar free. Supermarkets are for convenience and prepackaged stuff. Fresh meats & fruit should come from Butchers & green grocers, far better quality than foodstuffs that have been sitting in freezers for months.

                      Oscar Mayer has one:
                      Natural Oven Roasted Turkey Breast
                      100% natural
                      No artificial ingredients/minimally processed
No added nitrates or nitrites/except those naturally occuring in sea salt and celery

                      Ingredients:

                      Turkey Breast
                      Water
                      Sea Salt
                      Potato Starch
                      Celery juice

                      Nutritional info:

                      3 slices per serving

                      Calories 60

                      Protein 12g

Potato starch isn't on the ok list but I don't see how it is different than having sugar in dressings and mayo as long as it's further down the list. Sugar isn't even listed on the nutrition panel. May be a better choice if you want lunch meat.
