  • Is Korean BBQ at the restaurant okay on induction? (sugar + pear marinade)

    Hi friends!!

I'm currently in Induction (although I'm almost two full weeks finished, I do not want to "loosen up" on my last couple days).

My best friends are flying in and visiting from out of town, and they all want Korean BBQ- tonight.

Korean BBQ, which I'm sure most of you are aware of- is a sizzling, delicious, aromatic, irresistable low-carb, UNLIMITED high-protein, moderate fat, high-veggies meal - extremely delicious and extremely low-carb friendly (if you skip the rice and the rice wraps).

However, I am Asian myself and I grew up eating these meats- and the marinades are 99.999% prepared with:

    apples
    pears
    WHITE SUGAR
    HONEY
    RICE wine (sake)
    garlic
    onion

which are CARBS, CARBS, CARBS galore! If I SKIP even the lettuce/salad, skip all the hint-of-carbs-side-dishes, and eat just the MEAT (which is all-you-can-eat, by the way), isn't there STILL a chance that I'll hit 20grams of carbs due to the pure sugar in the above ingredients?

I know the meat doesnt SWIM in the marinade, but c'mon- everyone puts a decent amount of marinade while serving BBQ at restaurants...

Furthermore I'm definitely thinking I should eat at least 1 or 2 cups of lettuce/salad...

Thank you SO MUCH- as my friends are flying in, CRAVING this, and this is seemingly VERY Atkins-friendly, just not induction-friendly, I guess??

    [/SIZE]
I know this is pretty long, so here's my ultimate question:

I'm not going to turn my friends down when they ask me to take them to the best Korean BBQ place in town- so I am indeed going there - I'm guessing- just eat VERY very limited portions of the meat? Any thoughts and opinions deeply appreciated.

    Thank you very much!!!!!

ps. It will be tonight. So far, I had my breakfast (1.5 carbs total), lunch will be chicken with cheese (about 1 or 2 carbs total), as I'm saving my "carb allowance" for Korean bbq tonight.

sugar & fruit are not allowed in any quantity. Pick a different restaurant!

wow! thank you for your response.

There are a COUPLE meats in particular, however- seafood and pork, which do not have marinades on them- I can stick to these, right?

Just not the beef (which have sugar and fruit), I presume?

Bad idea to "save" your carbs and blow it on one meal. That's a sure way to spike your blood sugar.

Also eating high protein is not Atkins. Excessive dietary protein is converted to sugar, which is eventually stored as body fat. That's counterproductive. That's why Atkins is a high fat diet. Fat is about twice the calorie density of carbs or proteins and it doesn't spike blood sugar or gets stored as fat.

A better strategy for you is to eat a normal Atkins meal before you meet your friends tonight. Then if you are hungry, you can eat some of the meat without going overboard.

Going out with friends and socializing is a part of everyday life. Fill your stomach tonight with good conversation and good company.

I would have to say.... go out with your friends... but, as someone else mentioned, eat BEFORE going. Then, you can just have a side salad and a couple shrimp to tide you over while socializing.

You have to LIVE your life and not stay in hiding... but, you have to do so in ways that are going to be productive to what you are wanting to achieve. So, go out, have fun and say away from sugar & fruit! !!!!

great idea to eat beforehand, and not to overload on protein. i do believe i have overloaded on protein during my induction, as that is the easiest most convenient thing to prepare- chicken, beef, pork, etc.

i would always eat lettuce or half a tomato or other veggies with the protein, but if i took away so much protein, i would find myself getting a tiny bit hungry later...

the result was i did incur upon myself some... let's say... "rarity" in going to use the "bathroom", and really was disappointed to see myself going to the bathroom once every 2 days sometimes. but today i purchased some psyllium husk...

What I did once when going to a similar kind of restaurant was to take a few packets of mayonnaise with me and order my meat plain then just dollop my mayo on top as a dressing. I might have got 'some' sugars from any marinade which I didn't know about but at least I knew what was in the dressing.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I lived in Korea for a while:

You can have samgyeop sal, which is the three layered pork. You can have the seafood of any kind as it is usually not marinated. You can also have the more expensive beef kalbi which is served as is ("dweigi" or pig kalbi is marinated).

Mmmm. I miss Korean bbq. Loved the little lettuce leafs you could pile the meat and veggies on.
