  • I need help with a question

    Ok - so I am a little confused. I know that I am supposed to eat 20 g of net carbs a day according to the book. The book also says that I should eat 2 cups of salad greens and 1 cup off of the other veggie list or 3 cups of salad greens a day. I can also eat up to 4 ounces of cheese at 1g net carb appiece....

    With all of that said, I do not think I am going to get to my carb amount today if I eat three cups of spinach and my four ounces of cheese. Am I supposed to just get to 20 g net carbs or should I follow the amounts of food the book says?

    Spinach is a "other list" veggie & therefore is restricted to one cup.

    The trick is to choose higher carb veggies. You want more than 1/2 of your daily carbs to come from veggies. Don't forget that eggs, mayo...everything except meat has carbs in it...you have to count those too!

    The higher-carb veggies are also the most nutritious - so aiming for close to 20 net carbs/day is ideal.

      Ok. So even though eggs are on the 'eat liberally' list - that is not really the case then.....

      Also, I really do not have to pay attention to the 1 cup of this or that - just watching the net carbs, right?

        No, you DO have to eat 3 cups of veggies, from the appropriate lists (3 cups of spinach is not appropriate), and follow all of the rules - just make smart choices about WHICH veggies you are going to choose.

          1 cup of brussel sprouts will give you 4.6 net carbs. Or choose 1 cup of tomato which gives you 4.9 net carbs. 1 cup of spagetti squash will give you 7.9 net carbs. Some people will tell you to stay away from the squash but if I'm not mistaken it is in the OTHER allowed VEGETABLE list in the book(I don't have my book in front of me. Lent it to a friend).

            Ok - I see. I just need to make sure that I am getting to my 20g of net carbs a day with at least 10 being from veggies and the others coming from other stuff - duh.....

                  Actually, MOST of 20 net carbs would be a number greater than 10.

                  And you can eat eggs "liberally", you just need to account for the carbs in them.

                    Atkinsgal - what would be more helpful to hear would be examples of how i can get the majority of my carbs from the veggies that I have to choose from - can you help with that?

                      One idea would be to sit with the Induction food list and select the vegetables you like and work out the carb counts for them. Then you can mix and match.

                          and we do not have to eat all 20 net grams that is the max not the required amount.

                          if you like peppers spice or the sweet ones they are on the salad veggie list and can increase your total fast.

                          don't forget to count your carbs from your herbs and spices too in your total. anything that comes from a plant will have carbs and some shellfish do too.
