  • Induction - Day 1 complete!

    Hi Everyone,

Well, I just got through my first day of Atkins Induction. I was doing really great until about 4pm, and then the headache started. Normally, I've had about 130 carbs by that time (holy cow), and I just made my 20 carb limit this evening (according to fitday).

Here is what I had today. If you see something that needs to be changed, please let me know. After looking at this, I'm questioning the amount of cheese. I'm trying very hard to go by the 2002 book.

Breakfast - 1 scrambled egg, mixed with 1/4 cup diced tomatoes, mixed with 1/4 cup (2oz) mozzarella/cheddar cheese.

Lunch - Sirloin Tip Steak (small steak) stuffed with spinach (1 frozen packet, 2 carbs worth), 2oz mozzarella/cheddar cheese, and 2 tablespoons of Dijon Mustard (0 carb, 0 sugar).

Snack - 1oz Mozzarella String Cheese

Dinner - 2 cups lettuce, 1 cup diced tomatoes, 1 cup cucumbers.

I also topped the day with 10 8oz glasses of water.

    Thanks!

Remember that Fitday shows you total carbs ... and you need to count NET (carbs minus fiber). You can look in the graph under the Food log to find out how much fiber you had.

    >>2 tablespoons of Dijon Mustard (0 carb, 0 sugar). >>

    This actually has carbs though.

The Atkins carb counter book has it at 0.5 net carbs per Tbs.

Did you have 5 ounces of cheese or did I get it jumbled? The limit is 3-4 ounces.

You did good to have more than the minimum of water. Many find that having 1/2 their current body weight in ounces of water works well.

Why not have another egg or two at breakfast.

      Thanks for the info!

I am on the Atkins website at Atkins - Carb Counter - Condiments .

It lists Dijon Mustard as 0's across the board. Now I'm confused...LOL.

Is there anywhere I can go that counts only net carbs? I may resort the the ol' pen and paper if I can't find anything!

I'm planning on adding another egg in for breakfast on Friday morning. I experimented with just one this morning just in case I didn't like what I mixed in. After eating it, I wish I would have added another in...it was great!

The cheese went up to 5oz, and I didn't realize that until I saw it all "on paper" so to speak this evening. Ughhhh.

        >> I am on the Atkins website>>

They've had some unreliable carb counts since 2004. They haven't had the Induction food list correct since August 2008.

It's simply not a reliable source.

        >> Is there anywhere I can go that counts only net carbs?>>

The USDA will give you both total carbs and fiber ... you just subtract.

You can download it to your PC here:

Ok, looking at my fitday it says I had a total of 19.9 carbs today. It also states that I've had 6.6 of fiber. Am I subtracting from each individual item, or the grand total at the end of the day? I would assume each individual item, but I'm just double checking.

Congrats on your 1st day! It's a small celebration-keep up the good work! I just finished day 5 and today I was tempted to have a drink- but I amazingly kept my will power and didn't give in- I am surprised and proud of myself. You're menu look really good by the way!

That all sounds exemplary to me. You're doing just fine.

In my experience, if you're doing it right, you're being pretty watchful over what you're eating -- and that's what's going to make Atkins work for you. It sounds like you're doing that already.

Don't worry too much day to day; get through the first week, weigh in, and see where you're at. If you think you're not losing fast enough, then go back and look through the rules.

You can subtract the total for the day ... that means you had 13.3 net carbs for the day (about 1/2 what you need). If you click on an item in your food log, you can see the "nutritional label" for that food.

Some people enter all their vegetables firsts, so they know what the total for that food group is.

Then when they enter the other foods, they have their daily total.

Thanks so much guys...that helps A LOT. I wasn't understanding the net carb counting...I'm so glad I asked! I didn't even realize I was half way under what I should have had. Time to switch the menu up for tomorrow...

And remember, there's a learning curve to Atkins ... so don't feel that if a day isn't "perfect" that all is lost!

                          Well duh

But there are a lot of them, and if weight isn't coming off, it's best to go through them again and make sure.

I think this is a great point. If you fall off the horse, the most important thing isn't that you fell; it's that you get back on.
