This is off track, but my husband and I are planning on moving to Scotland in the next few years and would like to know if there are some areas we should stay away from. We are looking at Edinburgh. We would like to be near a major city, but live on the outskirts. My husband has been to England a couple of times, but we are in love with Scotland. We are planning a trip next year to scope out some areas.
Mothers Day not in England on 8 may? How weird is that?
Actually we don't have 'Mothers' Day' here at all :no
We have 'Mothering Sunday' which was the one day in the year that young female servants in the 'Big House' or 'Manor House' were allowed to go home to visit their mother and family.
The date varies as it is always on the the fourth Sunday of Lent.
Traditionally if they worked in the kitchens they used also to be allowed to make and take a Simnel Cake which is a fruit cake with Marzipan topping and/or centre and 11 little marzipan balls on the top (to represent the 12 Apostles minus Judas Iscariot) which is put under the grill for a short time to slightly caramelise.
The 'Hallmark Mother's Day' was a much later USA invention, and though we still celebrate Mothering Sunday on its original day here most of the cards have the word 'Mothers' Day' on them now.
It takes me ages and trips to several card shops each year to find a card for my Mum with the words 'Mothering Sunday' on it as she deplores the Americanisation of the celebration. :sadblinky

I do, Carol - on microwaved flax bread or flax crackers with cheese!!
The recipes are in the recipe database (link at the top of the page) - just type the word flax in the search box to see them.

Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Elizellen, I think I really like the concept of "Mothering Sunday" as you have described - it actually gives more meaning to the day. Thanks for sharing! :yes
