none of us got overweight eating veggies but we have all learned to eat them as a part of our Atkins weight loss program, and veggies are a very big part of Atkins and just about any weight loss program that allows you to maintain your weight loss when you arrive at goal. Dr Atkins said he was eating 6-8 cups of them in maintnenace. I'd strongly suggest you invest the time in yourself and read the book. See if you truely want to do Atkins or make excuses.
You can always create your very own low carb program but if you want proven results and means to handle cravings and appetite then I'd suggest you do Atkins.

If this disqualifies me as an Atkins follower, so be it as long as I lose weight. That is the goal here right?
You won't be healthy at any weight if you do not include any veggies in your eating plan. There are many ways to improve the taste of veggies. At least doing Atkins, you can eat veggies with butter, cheese or high fat dressing.

I would also like to mention that when we eat loads of starches and sugar, we desensitize our taste buds and veggies taste bitter instead of flavorful, and fruit tastes bland, so we douse it with sugar. Trust me, this is the main reason you think you don't like veggies. You need to allow yourself to regain use of your taste buds again, then and only then will you be able to appreciate veggie flavors.

Please also remember that if you eat too much protein, you won't lose weight or keep your weight off either, since the body turns excess protein to fat.

Losing weight is not the only goal in doing Atkins. We all want to be healthy. If you don't eat veggies, you will do your body a disservice, and you will most likely not stick with Atkins. Veggies round out our meals and make them varied. What a boring and non-nutritional plan without veggies!

No... grain carbs cannot be substituted for veggie carbs.

I used to be a veggie hater as well, you really do need to eat vegetables on this woe no way around it. Have you tried cooking them different ways? or tried any new ones you hadn't tried before? this worked for me. Half of my meals are veggies now! check out eh Vegetable of the week stickies that Moochicat has posted at the top of this forum..there are some great recommendations/recipes in there. If you don't eat vegetables you are not doing atkins (i don't believe you can do south beach w/o veggies either.) I really don't know of any healthy diet that does not include vegetables.

The goal here is just not about cutting carbs and losing weight. This is a Way of Eating, a lifestyle change that will make you far healthier in teh long run, with weight loss as an added benefit!

Sure you may lose weight eating meat and low carb bread..but can you really eat like that the rest of your life? The only way to successfully lose weight and to keep it off is to change your way of eating for LIFE. Not just for a few months while you lose weight.

Dont' forget..as said above you do get to add back food groups in OWL..induction is not forever. try the vegetables different ways and give induction a chance it's only 14 days..you may change your mind about vegetables. I did. :yes

Actually the short term goal is weight loss. The overall goal is good health and a healthful lifestyle.

2big is sooo right. I can definitely say when I started to eat pasta, bread, potatoes - this was the time of my life when I did put on the weight. It wasn't as though the amount I was eating was changing or I did less exercise - none of that. One of the mods here once mentioned "asian syndrome" - a term he coined to describe why many Asians weren't as obese as Americans, Australians etc. He said it was because Asians not only did a lot of activities earlier in the day, but potatoes, pasta, and bread wasn't a big part of their diet. Also, I have read studies that show Asians who move to countries like Australia, America and Canada are more likely to become overweight than had they remained in Asia.

Read the book. Dr Atkins actually suggest an overall nutritious well-balanced diet as opposed to just eating the carbs you like.
