When my sister and her husband were working in Manhatten they were renting in Hoboken, N.J because they couldn't afford Manhatten rent. Her monthly rent for an apartment in Hoboken was $3,000!!!!!! :yikes

Our cost of living here is pretty high but not that bad. Most 3 bed 2 bath homes in my town go for at the very least $250,000. Occasionaly you'll find one for under that. Most apartments rent in a very decent range if you're not looking for a luxury apartment. A decent 2 bed 2 bath goes for around $800. Not too bad. We live in a pretty desirable area though. Half way between Portland and Salem. It's about 25-30 miles to either city.
