  • Beware The Dangers Of The Low Carb Labelled Food

I went out with a couple of friends a few days ago, and was looking for a low carb snack to eat on the go. So i went to this health shop and picked up a low carb chocolate bar that listed 3 carbs on the packet. Then when i actually checked the nutritional list the bar contained 21.9 grams of carbs of which 16 grams were sugar. I was mortified!

I mean i was so close to totally screwing myself, can the food industry do this, it was blatant mis-labelling.

I thought it might apply to if you had like 100 grams of the chocolate bar but sure as sugar when i checked it was for that individual bar.

Yes,it's VERY important to read the entire label, including the ingredients.

I've seen products that have in tiny print on one side of the box with the words "Not appropriate for the weight loss phases of Atkins".

Also be sure to compare the low carb product with the regular version. I compared one "low carb" line of salad dressings to their regular counterparts and the only difference between the two were the bottle-shapes, the amount the bottle contained and the cost. The both contained the same ingredients, but the "low carb" dressing had less dressing in the bottle and was about 75 cents more expensive.

I had a similar experience the other day. I was running around doing errands for several hours and decided to pick up a jar of sunflower seeds to get me by. Three days later, I was finishing off the jar and I just happened to glance at the ingredient list. Ack! There were about five forms of sugar in it! Whoever thought of the idea of adding SUGAR to sunflower seeds? They're a perfect food right out of the shell!

Not that surprizing. I can't remember which brand, but one brand of pumpkin and sunflower seeds in the shell has cornstarch or flour on the shells. I guess they use the flour/cornstarch to help the salt stick to the shell.
