  • nuts?

Just curious, are any of you eating various nuts to get your needed fat and carb intake? OR do you really need to be eating meat and veggies instead?

    Thanks!

    Dear Micha,

Nice to meet you first of all! From my understanding of induction, we aren't supposed to eat nuts at all. I am eating proteins, cheese, and have been having a few cocoa/whipped cream delights this week to get in my fat.

      Re: nuts?

It is my opinion that nuts are allowed in Extended Induction for those planning to do Induction for awhile. This is debatable, but if needed, I can raise the DANDR quotes I have posted before to support my position. Certainly, the majority of your carb intake should still be from veggies as they should be in any phase of this WOE. Nuts are highly addictive and have messed up more than one Atkineer, so take them with portion control very much in mind.

          Re: nuts?

          Here are the passages:

After the first two weeks of Induction, when you can introduce nuts and seeds into your menus, you will find they make excellent snacks and often an unexpected and tasty ingredient in an entree or vegetable dish. You can also use ground nuts and seeds in lieu of breading before baking or sauteing chicken breasts, veal scallops or fish fillets. Like all good things, nuts and seeds should be eaten in moderation. An ounce of most nuts or seeds contains roughly 5 grams of carbs
          p 62

Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.

            Re: nuts?

Just be careful about nuts. Speaking from the OWL perspective, they are the foods that causes the most problems in terms of stalling and slow downs. Even in OWL, the most nuts are limited to 1 ounce. Cashews are limited to 1/2 ounce due to their high carb content.

The nut problem is similar to the cheese problem: nuts are high calorie (about 100-200 calories per ounce depending on the nut), nuts are allergenic (minor food intolerances can manifest as bloating, weight loss stalls, etc.), nuts carry yeast which can be a problem for those with chronic yeast infection, many nuts are salted (which can cause water retention in some folks), and a small amount is all you are allowed, so you have to be very careful about the portion size.

              Re: nuts?

I'm not eating nuts because I'm on an extended induction, and when I get to the nuts rung on OWL I intend to be cautious with them because I've always been able to eat heaps of them without even really noticing,

Thanks for clarifying the nut issue

I'll also stick to the basics for the rest of extended induction and only introduce nuts when im in OWL. No point in putting in all this effort and having it messed up by a few litttle nuts!

                  Re: nuts?

there are slight differences between 14 day induction move to OWL and long extended induction 1 stress that 1 ounce a day in exteneded induction is allowed.

                    Re: nuts?

When doing modified OWL (extended induction while climbing the rungs) you might try nuts, but introduce them in only two or three times that week to ensure you don't experience any intolerances to them.

Extended induction is generally sticking to induction. Modified OWL is a very restrictive OWL program which allows for a more pure form of a rotational diet.

                      Re: nuts?

I eat them occasionally and the past couple few days too much!!! I won't buy them again for a while but I was eating 1-2 ounces of them a day and that puts my calories way too high... however, whne i buy them I go ahead and weigh the whole cannister out to one ounce snack bags... Otherwise I have no portion control!!!!

BTW, nuts are very healthy, particularly almonds and walnuts, (not so much peanuts) Macadama nuts are addictive and hence I avoid them cause they are soooooo good and soooooo expensive. They make a great crust for pumpkin pie, Not2late was thinking about using them as a thickener for graveys, I haven't heard how that worked out, and they are a great source of fiber, which we all know we need a lot of to reduce those carbs.

While I did Induction straight through to my weight loss goal, I allowed melted natural peanut butter in the evenings - following Induction strictly otherwise. This is not for everybody, of course, but it worked for me. I just love the oil at the top; it has always been my most favorite part.
