  • Flaxmeal a staller?

    Hey Everyone!

Just curious... I am really bad about eating breakfast, but I decided to try the Induction legal flaxmeal muffins to my menu. I would eat 2 every morning with about 1 tbsp of butter (I was also looking forward to the "movement" benefit of flaxmeal) and this is the first week that I did not lose any weight.

I really like these muffins and would hate to have to cut them out.

Anyone else stall after introducing flaxmeal to their diet?

Any food can be a "staller" depending on how it affects your body. If you think a food affects you, drop it from your diet and see what happens. If your weight loss resumes, then you know that food is a problem and it's best to avoid it during your weight loss phases.

Flaxmeal is made from flax seed. Seeds and nuts are one of the biggest stallers for the folks in the OWL phase and the OWL amounts are 1 ounce for this food group.

Fiber supplements like flax, psyllium husk, and wheat bran are acceptable during Induction and are limited to 1-2 tablespoons daily. So there are other fiber supplements that can be used. In fact, Dr. Atkins preferred psyllium husks (DANDR 2002 Chapter 23). Flax meal is favored by many people on ADBB because if provides omega-3 fats and because it can be used as a flour substitute. Personally, I'm not impressed by the omega-3 benefits because the type of omega-3 fat flax contains needs to be converted by your body into a usable omega-3 fat and your body needs about 15 grams of that flax oil in order to produce about 1 gram of the usable omega-3 fat. As for the flour substitute--it works, but if eating muffins, crackers and cookies helped to make you fat in the first place, is it really wise replacing those foods with lower carb alternatives or should you be re-training yourself with other foods?

You can make 'omlette muffins'. Just mix egg, veggies of your choice, cheese, meat, and pour it into muffin tins and bake, then you can just warm them up.
I don't think those muffins are Induction friendly, more for OWL Rung 3.
What would we do without it?

If eggs, meat, veggies and cheese are all that is in them then they will be fine for induction. Just watch you are not going over your cheese limit for a day (3-4 ounces)
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I tried the omlette muffins and found them to get too dry and nearly impossible to swallow.

I tried psyllium husk as a fiber supplement, didn't help.

Stopped the flaxmeal muffins last thursday and have dropped 2 lbs since, so I guess they're a staller for me! *sigh*.

Muffins didn't make me fat... Steak super nachos did! LOL

              Re: Flaxmeal a staller?

were they a staller or were they holding fluids bulking up ther waste in your intestines? whenever you add a fiber supplement to your diet you will add weight as most fibers used for intestinal issues like psyllium, flax and wheat bran or the newer ones soak up a lot of water about 1 cup per tablespoon of product which weighs about 1/2 a pound. they hold this water and anything else that gets mixed into it in the intestines and stomach as it proceeds along the tract. so if you are slow moving say it takes 3-4 days to work its way through you having 2 T a day can add up to 3-4 pounds in your intestines of "fiberweight". Since you need the movement and we are concerned about fat loss not scale loss check your inches and see if you are losing inches of fat while the scale doesn't move. Once you get constipated you can hold many pounds in there as anybody who has weighed before and after constpation relief can tell you.

hey 2big, that's great to know, thanks for the heads up

I'll keep that in mind, since i just started taking fiber caplets. I'll make sure to ignore the scale for the next few days. it would have made me wonder!

oh goodness i thought i read somewhere that those flax muffins were allowed on induction, im almost done with week 2 and in the two weeks i have had 3 of those, they are delicious but i find they are something i crave so i try to eat them every 3-4 days, but not anymore thanks all for the heads up, now i feel like i cheated but i will just pick up my head and move on.

According to DANDR Flax is ONLY used for constipation and limited to 1 tbsp per day. I used it for week #2 because I was starting to get constipated and have had no loss in week#2. I stopped using it and will see.
