  • Bacon, Look Out!

Last night we had a clog in our sink, and I called my FI to come in to check to see what was clogging the sink.

He pulled out the "trap" and into the bucket dropped a yellow icky goo.
He and I looked at it, and it was from all of the bacon grease that I had cooked since starting the atkins diet! Now I am steering clear of all bacon, nasty!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always pour my bacon grease into a little pyrex dish and let it get solid overnight before throwing it in the garbage. I worry about sink clogs, with good reason I see!

Me too. I always heard it was bad to pour it down the sink.

I lay the bacon on 3-4 layers of paper towels with a layer on top to prevent splattering and then microwave it. When it's done, just throw away the paper towels as they soak up the grease.

I've never microwaved bacon. Does it get crispy at all? How long do you cook it?

I cook 3 slices for 2 minutes and it comes out cooked but not crispy, but then I don't like it really crunchy. Of course, you could lengthen the time a little and make it more crispy.

Awesome, I'll have to try that! I hate all the splatter that gets on the stove when frying it. My husband likes it floppy and I can eat it either way so this might work well. Thanks!

                Re: Bacon, Look Out!

When I cook bacon I take the whole package and lay it out on a sided cookie sheet and cook in the oven. The bacon comes out great. I then let it drain and cool and store it in a ziploc bag in the fridge for salads or omelets or whatever else. That way I am done with mess in one shot. And I never pour the grease in the sink, tempting though it is.

How do you do this? Broil or bake? If bake, what temp for how long? I want to try this!

Angel, were you pouring it into a sink with a garbage disposal? I run cold water and send mine down the garbage disposal and I've never had a problem.

                          Re: Bacon, Look Out!

To bake the bacon I use a cookie sheet with sides. I cook it at 375 for about 20 minutes. But my oven is a little nutty so I always have to check. If I have too much bacon to fit on the pan I will overlap a little. You can then pull it apart after it is cooked.

I have a coffee can to put used bacon grease in, when I am cooking something like collard greens, I use the grease for seasoning. It give it just a little extra kick in the fat department to help with the carbs.

                              Re: Bacon, Look Out!

I work closely with the people in my city who are responsible for cleaning and maintaining our sewer lines. They routinely have to clean lines that are plugged up with grease. I have seen video shot through some of these pipes and let me tell you it is truley disgusting and, perhaps more importantly, it's quite costly. This stuff just builds up and up until eventually the effective diameter of the pipe is so small that normal flow can barely get past. When that happens you start getting sewer backups, overflowing toilets, sinks that won't drain etc. Eventually you have to get a plumber in there to clean the whole line and that bill is something you don't want to pay.

Please please do as the link Susan provided says and don't dump grease down your drain.
