  • Atkin Friendly Resturants?

Does anyone know if their are any resturants that have atkin friendly menus? OR that has a low carb menu?

I know that there are a few items you can eat at any resturant most the time..(steak,eggs,bacon,chicken etc.) just wondered if any have a low carb section on the menu. I know applebees only has weight watchers on theirs.

Just stick with whole foods that don't have added fillers or processing. And be very inquisitive about the preparation of your meal!

Salads are a good option, and usually grilled meats are OK, too. However, some restaurants inject their meats with a sugar/spice solution to make them tastier. Omelets are usually ok, but make sure to ask if the omelet is made from eggs only--IHOP puts pancake batter in their omelets. When you eat veggies, ask for them either steamed, or cooked in olive oil or butter, make sure they add no flour or sugar to them.

Ruby Tuesday's has some remains of it's old Atkins menu ... steaks, chicken, seafood. They have yummy veggie alternatives - baby green beans, mashed cauliflower (which I eat with butter and sourcream), steamed broccoli. mmmm! the lo-carb cheesecake is gone, as is the lo-carb margarita!

The Cheesecake Factory also has some lo carb options. Last time I was there, they had grilled artichokes, drizzled with olive oil and garlic. The also have the lo carb cheesecake. (brought home a slice - hubbie and I stretched it out to three desserts each!)

Check out the Restaurant Forum under the Food and Cooking section of this board. There is input and suggestions for many, many places.

Ruby Tuesday around here went almost completely the opposite direction. It used to be very Atkins Friendly and now you can't even get a salad without fried chicken on it. There are a few things, like the Church Street Chicken, but you have to sub out sides, ya know? Anyway...give that forum a try!

Cracker Barrel offers a low carb menu. The smothered grilled chicken tenderloin is very good I am also a BIG fan of Carrabba's Italian Grill. The chicken bryan is to die for, along with the ceasar salad (minus the croutons) and their veggie of the day.

I have always found being the "pain in the *ss" customer by asking for lots for modifications to get most restaurants low carb. Mexican and low carb fajitas are generally an easy mod to get legal. Red Robin and most other burger joints offer low carb alternatives with lettuce wraps or "no bun" items. Having a Cracker Barrel across the street from my work has also been nice too.

How is Cracker Barrel for low carb eating? We have one near me, but no matter what time of day it's like a 2 hour wait! So needless to say I haven't been there yet. I've been to one before, but a long time ago. I'm not much into waiting around...

We went out to dinner last night (yeah I know different country) but I asked so many questions as to what was in the food and the waitress was soooo helpfull - I did explain why! Her husband was the chef and cooked everything brilliantly - had a great night - just had to miss out on the bread and sweet - but they put in an extra cheese course!

We love TGI Fridays. They have low carb options marked on the menu. Very useful and really good food too!

I think any place, (except olive garden, lol) are atkins friendly because you can alter any menu item you like.
Just cut out the starches, watch the sauces, and get double veggies!

Oh I agree on Cracker barrell too, its not that great a food. Its got lots of fat and oil in there stuff. I leave there feeling icky and bloated, Ive not been back there in probably like 3 years..

                              Re: Atkin Friendly Resturants?

I was just going to say, TGIF. When I first started Atkins, no restaurant had a low-carb menu, but Atkin's book used to give ideas on how to alter any menu to suit your needs. I hesitate to quote some things from his original book because it appears a lot has changed since then, both with the nutrional suppliments and the diet itself. But I recall a section in the book about eating out... "Can I have a cheeseburger? A: YES! You can have all the cheeseburgers you want, you just can't have the bun." Or, "Is pizza allowed? A: Yes! Just be sure to pull the toppings off the crust first, and only eat the toppings". So I'd go into any old diner and order up a cheeseburger, yank off the bun, and instead of fries I would get cottage cheese, and a diet iced tea. I had lots of fun at Red Lobster, substituting steamed veggies for the potato and had all the shellfish I wanted. At Chili's I used to get the spinach artichoke dip and instead of chips I requested veggies, but now they actually have that on the menu just like that. So there's lots of things you can do to everyday items to make them acceptable (at least it was acceptable back then).
