  • I went to the GYM !!!!

    well only for 45 minutes - hard work to burn off 200 calories!

    What I would like to know though is............is it the amount of calories we burn off that is important, or the actual exercise?

    my main exercise was walking - on a steep gradient at 6km per hr - most of she stuff in the gym is beyond my abilities ( joint trouble)

    The excercise and the length of time excercising is what counts. Calories are pretty irrevelant to be honest.

    Congrats by the way on making that step.

    It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!




    I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      so it doesn't have to be an aerobics class!

      half an hour on the treadmill okay? - will try to get to the gym and do it about 4 times a week.

        Woo hoo!! For me, the HARDEST part is getting the exercise done. I'm just lazy at heart

          I'm with the, "if you're moving, you're doing" idea of exercise Sounds like you got a great plan to me of 30 minutes 4 times a day at the gym. Have fun with it!

          You might even invest in a cheap/nice pedometer to track your miles. Sometimes just walking around during your normal activies will give you anywhere between 2-4 miles a day!

          I do 2 miles a day every day on purpose; mostly without thinking about it because I'm constantly thinking about life while walking..LOL. Although, there are some days I do more depending on which grade I subsitute for....LOL...6th graders make me move faster than the 2nd graders for some reason.

            Just the fact you did the exercise means more than how many calories you burned while doing it. Remember that exercise boosts your metabolism so you increase the amount of fat you burn during your daily activities. So it's win/win! Congrats on taking the plunge.

                wow I met someone in the gym today that I hadn't seen for ages and she said that I had lost "so much weight!" wow she really needs new specs - I am actually about a stone heavier than last time she saw me - so maybe the inches are soming off - I really should have invested in a tape measure. Week 4 and still stuck on 12lbs - so hopefully the exerise will give it a push.

                  Congrats on getting to the gym! Wonderful!

                  Re calories burnt... remember that the number the exercise machines tell you you've burnt includes the calories of your BMR in that time frame... so, if thinking "weight loss due to calories burnt" you'd have to knock those off the total... and it can be around half!
                  Lots of people go to the gym, burn "so many" calories and then go out and eat something that totals that same amount of calories, thinking they're "safe". Wrong.
                  It's building muscle that keeps you in shape... muscle takes more energy to maintain than fat... the more muscle you have the more you can eat without gaining.

                  The gym is great... but as Rich says, the "calories burnt" don't mean much.

                    and of course - muscle weighs more! - but I am happy to go with the idea that I will be beautifully toned for the summer! for when I dare bear my legs! and as long as the exercise improves the maetabolism than it should be good - and I won't be eating the burnt off calories.(I hope)
