  • Low Carb Bread?

Hi all. Today is the end of my two weeks of induction, however, I think I am going to continue on the induction. If I remember correctly, I can do it for up to a month. I find Atkins VERY difficult to do. I have tried Atkins many, many times over the years and never lasted more than a week. The fact that I actually made it to this point, and am going to continue in induction is such a huge thing for me! I can't even tell you how big it is.

The thing is though, I did what I had to do in order to stay on the plan....and that was to eat the Atkins bars every day. I lost between 4 ounces to a pound every day, for a total of 9 pounds lost to date even with doing the Atkins bars. So even though I am going to try and do the induction again to continue losing at this pace, I'm wondering if anyone adds the low carb bread into their induction. I've never done it before. A friend of mine gave me some Atkins cookbooks and all of them talk about using low carb tortillas or low carb bread during phase 1. So I got some Healthy Life brand wheat bread today that has 5 net carbs per slice.

Has anyone had any luck with this? Any advice at all? I do plan on having at least one Atkins bar a day, so that I'm losing slowly, steadily...but I don't want to rock the boat by doing an Atkins bar AND the low carb bread if there is a problem with the bread.

    Thanks!

    Re: Low Carb Bread?

Are you familiar with the OWL phase of atkins? if not i suggest you read up on it, you'll see that bread isnt added into this WOE until the last part of that phase.

Youve had a great loss with 9 pounds, congrats, you may find your weightloss will stall out if you stick to using those bars, so be prepared to drop them if that does happen.

Sorry, but no bread for a long time...........unless it's flax bread, which you can make yourself. There are recipes in the foods section of this forum.

Your next step is to add more veggies. After that will be dairy, I think. Anyway, you have to follow the steps.

So cool about the bars and that they haven't hindered you! That is fantastic. Do you need them because of a sweet tooth? You know there are many things you can make and eat to indulge that, just as legally, if you get tired of the bars.

      I survived a two-month stall!

        Hi Shams,

Congrats on your losses so far! Bread is something that is a treat much, much later on up the carb ladder.

Why do all of the cookbooks I have say that low carb bread and low carb tortillas are ok??? Why would anyone even follow the cookbooks if they are giving recipes that don't work with the plans? How annoying!

          Thanks guys!

            Re: Low Carb Bread?

Are they Atkins books or low carb books? atkins is kinda different, we introduce certain foods gradually so that we can work out what foods we can eat and cant eat...

if its Atkins its most probably made by Atkins nutritionals who are just out to make money, they didnt appear until AFTER Dr Atkins death...

Have you read DANDR 2002? if not i suggest you invest and read it, its a fab book that will teach you to do this way of life perfectly!

              Re: Low Carb Bread?

I have three of the books and all three say they are Atkins books, and they have the Atkins symbol with the big red A. What gets me is if the nutritional people at Atkins are introducing this stuff knowing that people aren't going to do well, it would make people fail on the diet, and then not use their products because the diet isn't working for them. I don't see how it benefits them. Regardless it's annoying.

I used the bars because I am a very busy mom and do not always have the option to have fresh, refrigerated foods at my side. We are always on the run. So I always have the bars in my purse. Some days I was eating up to two bars and was still losing. But I don't think I want to push the limits with the bread. I mean, I only have 10 pounds to lose...10 left...now that I just lost 9 in the first two weeks. So I guess I will have to play around a little bit. I have one of those scales that shows me ounces lost. That is probably one of the single reasons I am still doing the diet...because I can see that every day ounces are disappearing.

I haven't heard of DANDR 2002. I'm assuming I can get it anywhere?

              Thanks again!

                Re: Low Carb Bread?

yep, most book stores, ebay even

i would suggest you hopeon over to the OWL forum, as you only have so little to lose you need to get to moving up those rungs! read the stickies in there then post any questions!

in regards to the bars i really dont recommend them, but i know people will do best with what works for them, the best bet is to take one day, do what you can, plan your week out and freeze some supplies and avoid the bars as much as possible.

The big Red A is atkins nutritionals, theyre the money makers... i agree its a shame, my mum thought she was being nice buying me their recipes, okay sos theres stuff i can h ave when im maintaining and at goal, but for now theyre staying at the back of my cupboards.

                  Re: Low Carb Bread?

Emma is right - many of the Atkins products are really not 'legal' till you reach the higher OWL levels/rungs.

Dr Atkins told us to check the actual ingredients of any foods to help us decide if they are 'allowed' for the stage of Atkins we are at.

So if the bars (or other foods) contain milk, yogurt, nuts, seeds, fruit, soya, grains etc they really are not 'induction-legal' according to the allowed list of foods for induction and need to be left till you are on the relevant OWL rung that allows all of the ingredients.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                    Re: Low Carb Bread?

Oh the bars...I still have a bunch of them in the kitchen cabinet somewhere.
The ones I have even say they are good for all phases incl. induction and yet I decided to leave them out of my diet until they are actually legal.
Believe me, I've had 3-4 of these bars a day and kept losing while I still did a general low carb diet but I decided to drop them when I went on Atkins as I wanted to do the diet 100%.
They might not stall you but they are definitely a crutch...kinda the easy way out.
Instead of taking several bars with me to work, I now prepare my food the evening before or in the morning before I leave for work.
fresh veggies and cold chicken or meat balls (no fridge needed for that).
It works well and you actually know what you are eating....maybe you can try it, that way so you don't need the bars anymore.
Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

                      Re: Low Carb Bread?

Congrats on your loses so far Shams!

I will repeat what Sera said with alittle planning you can eat real yummy food. My biggest fear for starting this WOE was time. We have 3 children which in itself is alot to handle daily. However, my youngest is autistic which means life revolves around her. I also work part-time (which is a joke really i get paid for part-time but work many more hours). But we have not only been able to adapt, but are saving tons of money. We used to eat out almost every night. Now the whole family gets to enjoy healthy meals at home. Usually we cook dinner the night before we plan to have it and we use left overs for lunch. I also keep backups for nights the kids dont wanna eat our food. I know its hard to start planning, but I am sure you will find like us there are many many benefits to it. Best of Luck and congrats on your future success.
