  • Coffee? How Does it affect your weight loss?

Coffee is the world to me. I can give up just about anything, but coffee is and has to be the hardest to avoid while doing Atkins. Coffee curbs my appetite, its' hot and it just tastes soo good, especially one in the Morn and night. My usual intake of coffee is only 3 cups. I think it may be part of of my weight loss stall lately.

Just wondering. How many people are drinking coffee, how much and for those who have done atkins for a long time, how has coffee affected your weight loss?

    Your coffee story please

Re: Coffee? How Does it affect your weight loss?

I dont drink coffee any more so cant say anything about how giving it up might affect your own weightloss journey, but I noticed you have lost a fair bit of weight already and wondered why you are still on induction?
Many people find their weightloss increases when they move to the next phase of Atkins (ongoing weight loss) and start to add more foods and you do need to make sure you are able to conduct the great OWL experiment before you are too close to your goal.

    Edited to add:
Also many people experience a 'hiatus' in their weight loss a few weeks into Atkins as their body seems to take a breather and sort itself out. Often they find they are losing inches while the scales stay stubbornly static or even rise!
As you are now starting your 4th week of induction this might be happening to you.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Coffee? How Does it affect your weight loss?

I sure wish I was not a coffee drinker. I envy my husband who makes good use out of his carb intake on atkins using more veggies then I.

I know that I should move onto OWL. It's a physiological issue, that I admit. I think because of feeling weak, hungry and no changes in weight loss this past week ( even a bit bloated to be honest ), I assume that I am doing something wrong towards my last few days on my Induction that I should stay until this problem sorts itself out.

Note: For dinner tonight, I ate a very high fat meal. That did the trick. So I wonder if my fats are not high enough to sustain, even though I was eating the right foods on Induction. I opened up fitday tonight to use that to help keep track.

In your opinion, do you think it's wise to move into OWL even though the way I feel is unstable?. The book sometimes confuses me. The test in whether to move into OWL ...I fail horribly for how I feel which is an indication to move forward. Yet, yes I do want to utilize OWL with weight loss pounds still required to get me to my goal.

I'd certainly move to OWL. Most people have no probs losing at all at rung 1 and many lose even more than in induction. OWL is supposed to be the main weight loss phase of Atkins and it takes time to find out how various foods affect you.

As for coffee... I never had any issues with it, but have never been a coffee addict... I switched to decaf happily and now have "real" coffee occasionally, with no probs.

Re: Coffee? How Does it affect your weight loss?

During my first week of induction, I gave up caffeine at the suggestion of someone here after I expressed my frustration at what seemed to be snail-like weight loss. The next week I dropped 8 lbs.

I was also a BIGGG coffee drinker, but I am willing to forgo the coffee in exchange for seeing the pounds drop off ~ I switched to decaf herbal teas instead (I might have a small decaf coffee here & there when I have an emotional need for it, LOL)

          no more caffeine for me!

I think coffee affects my weight loss as well. However, so does diet sodas (with aspertame), I won't lose if i drink/eat too much aspertame. I love coffee too but this week I took it out.

Where am I going wrong? should I totally cut out my De-caf coffee? or Cheese? or aspartame that I have in my de-caf Coffee? God I am sooooo confused, I dont know why Im not losing weight, sure as **** losing faith here
And then I read all these posts and I think to myself am I the only one NOT LOSING, for everyone else it seems to be working like the Magic Pill...

                  Hi Me

It is discouraging to see others losing weight when your own scales are being mean to you Are your clothes fitting any differently? Are you feeling any different healthwise?

It might be there is some simple adjustment to your chosen menus needed to get you started.

We have a special forum here where you can post your daily menus to see if anyone can suggest ways of improving your food choices. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...aysprune=&f=50

                    Thanks Elizellen you're a sweetheart!

Thats very generous of you to point me out to the right direction. I will most certainly jot down my menu in the link you sent me and hope that there IS A PROBLEM, so that I can resolve it and start seeing some results

I posted in another part of this forum, and the atkineer was sweet enough to point out that too much of the 'allowed food' too can sometimes put a damper on your weight loss. And it hit me that maybe Im having way too much of the good stuff Nonetheless, I will be posting my menu so all the experts can give me some feedback where Im going wrong.... God I soooo hope Im doing something wrong and thats why my weight isnt moving, so if i can isolate the problem then I can definitely resolve it....

                    Love you all....

Re: Coffee? How Does it affect your weight loss?

                      Hello!

I am an AVID coffee drinker and I this is my second time on Atkins. I have to say that I haven't been able to cut coffee out this time as I work in an office and it is just great to have while I work. I have been having Decaf Americanos from Starbucks just one a day. I do fear, however, that my weight loss might suffer from it but I am going to wait and see what happens on my next weigh day.

I have to say that when I was on Atkins before (I did extended induction for about 2 months) I lost about 40 to 50 pounds between the middle of March and the beginning of June. It was great and after about two weeks I would have an extra large latte with sugar even and i did just fine. I had "whooshes" every other day. Losing 3 pounds every other day at some times. So it really depends on how your body adjusts to caffeine. It might give you a boost but then again it might tempt you to delve into other things!

Just listen to what YOUR body is telling you!

I'm like you. I have to have my cup of joe to get moving in the morning!! The first time I did atkins, I was losing steadily with no problems and drinking about 2 cups a day. Same goes for this time around, I haven't found it to stall me at all...but everyone is unique, so I guess it's a trial and error thing

I lost 60 lbs in 6 months on Atkins and I drank 2 cups of coffee with Splenda and cream every morning, but that's me everyone is different. However it does go to show you that the idea of no caffeine is not low carb dogma you have to gauge it for yourself how you respond and adjust accordingly.

I can . It doesn't affect my , and frankly, the world is a better place for me not having to give it up again.

                            BUT....

I didn't drink it for the first 2 years I was on Atkins. I gave up caffeine entirely, then added some decaf coffee in....then half caf....then the occasional diet cream soda...and now I usually drink half-caf, but sometimes leaded stuff. I've learned the caffeine does not affect me personally with weight removal. I know that to be fact because of the way I went about introducing it back into my diet. YMMV!

It's one of those things where if you're drinking it and you have trouble...drop it and only it for 2-3 weeks and see if the scales/inches/cravings/etc start moving or go away. If they do..then you know what the culprit is. If they don't..well...

The first time I did Atkins I was very determined, I abstained from everything, followed the book to the letter, and was very successful. The second time around I didnt do as well, and I wholeheartedly believe it was due to the coffee and alcohol I didnt give up. I didnt gain but I didnt loose either. I was drinking reg. coffee like a fish, w/cream and splenda. The alcohol consumption was casual, mostly rum and diet. From what I read both on this board and in the book, and from my experience, ABSTAIN, at least until you get to OWL.-jm2c
