Re: So Ready to give up

If you're "doing everything right" and not losing weight. You're NOT "doing everything right"...unless you're losing inches and not weight, or gaining muscle, etc...

It is not possible to "do everything right" and not see positive changes. Whether it be weight-loss, inch-loss, muscle-gain, increase in energy...etc.

From what I've noticed, is that when people aren't losing weight, and they think they're doing everything right, they're not. You can't just walk around eating whatever you want that you think has low carbs. There IS a such thing as eating too much on this diet, and there are things that can stall you even though they are supposedly "carb-free".

Also...one of the main questions I wonder about people who don't see weight loss is 'are you exercising?'...I mean, 20-40 minutes of cardio, 3-5 times a week. Sure, walking is cardio...but there are things that you can do that will increase your weight-loss/endurance...etc. that are more efficient than walking. For instance:

    -get into a HIIT routine
    -do walk/jog intervals
-change your routine (yes your body gets used to your work-out, and it can become ineffective)
-wear a heart-rate monitor and try to get into your target heart-rate.

When I fail, or I stop losing weight, I rant and rave in my journal or to friends "I hate atkins! it doesn't work!! im doing everything right"...but I'm only venting because I want atkins to be easy...i usually know what I'm doing wrong (ie: not enough exercise...drinking alcohol...ignoring sauces...eating out..)

If you genuinely don't know what you're doing wrong, and you're not just having a fit of self-pity (I'm not getting down on this, everyone has it at some point)...then do this:

write down everything that you do and eat for a solid week, everything! Post it in the forums here, and get feedback.

There is no reason why anyone and everyone cannot succeed on this diet if they put enough time and effort into it.

    You all can do it!!!!!

edit: Also, look for the thread about how weight loss is not linear, and keep this in mind----

If I go for a period where I do not lose weight (3days-4weeks), but I am doing everything right, I remind myself that...as long as I keep doing what I'm doing, i WILL lose weight...I certainly wont gain weight!! Which I would if I quit. There is a cycle that a lot of people, including myself go through, some refer to them as "wooshes"...when you plateau for weeks, then all of a sudden you gain a couple pounds, and the next day you lose 4-5...this is very common.

The other thing that people need to keep in mind, is that Atkins is a way of life...do not think of it as something that you can "quit" whenever you want...YOUR HEALTH IS NOT AN OPTION. QUITTING ON YOUR HEALTH IS NOT AN OPTION. Do you quit your job on days you don't like it? No, because you know that having a job, and making money is necessary for living, being successful, and having a happy life, and being there to support your family.

Your health is something that you need for living, being successful, and having a happy life, and being there to support your family!

Re: So Ready to give up

Carbless in Seattle has given such good advice. In the original post, you say you are doing everything right, but you also say you are still on induction and had a "binge" day. My husband is always saying, "you didn't gain ita ll in one week, don't expect to lose it all in one week."

Stick with it. Give it time and really really monitor what you are doing carefully. Good luck

Hi Girls, I am new to this group, but not to the diet/life style. All I can say is if you cheat on this diet you need to get right back up and work even harder. It seems to me each time I went off it was a little harder to start again. If you do cheat and fall out of ketosis, DON"T go wild and eat everything in that moment of despair. I have found that if I fall out of ketosis and I stick to the plan that I come right back into ketosis in a day or so, but if I got side tracked and ate gooey gobby stuff it can take a week to fix it! For me anyways. Also, don't weigh so often, it is better to stick to the plan whole heartedly and then get that big WOW the next time you weigh, that way you don't notice the little ups and downs that can get us all down. Remember, it is a life goal! Good Luck, stick with it and Best Wishes.

so true! my weigh-in days are wednesdays...if i actually waited till wednesday, and only that day to weigh-in, I'd have seen losses every week...instead I weigh everyday, which is silly, cause the other day i was 163, now im 157..day-to-day weight fluctuations can get you really confused.

Re: So Ready to give up

              Facts:

              1. Atkins is a fantastic way to lose lots of weight, but it is not an "overnight miracle diet"! You didn't gain the pounds overnight and you can't lose it over night. It is not magic.

              2. Your weight might do strange things the first few weeks. Your body tries hard to maintain the status quo, and it takes a while to convince it that you really mean to lose this weight and give up addictive foods. It will try to trick you into giving it it's carb fix, just as if you were going cold turkey off drugs or booze. Stay off the scale! Do not weigh until the end of a clean induction. Do measure yourself right now and then again at the end of 14 days clean induction.

              3. Dr. Atkins said to not count calories, but he never said that calories don't count. You are supposed to eat any time you are physically hungry and then eat until you are satisfied, and not a bite more. As a moderator says in her siggy: "Just because it's legal doesn't mean you can have three helpings."

              4. What's this stuff about I'm starting the second week of induction and I can't get over this plateau? You are not on a plateau or even stalled until you have gone 4 weeks without a loss of pounds or inches. If you are still in induction, especially if you are not following every single rule (<20 carbs from foods on the list, exercise, water consumption, 3 servings of artificial sweetener per day and no more, 3-4 oz. hard, aged cheese per day), you couldn't possibly be on a plateau or stalled--even if you have not lost a pound.

              5. Attitude is everything. The negatives will defeat you every time. If you say, "I can not stop cheating!" you won't be able to. Your mind gives you results according to the input it receives. Change your attitude; change the results.

              6. Losing weight and changing a lifetime of bad eating and exercising habits takes work. Hard work. Anything in life worth doing is going to take effort and work on your part. We, as a society, are too used to seeking instant gratification. We want what we want and we want it yesterday. Most of the food we stuff in our mouth is about the instant gratification thingy and not true hunger.

Make up your mind what you really want. How bad do you want it? Then decide what you are willing to do (price you're willing to pay) to get what you really want. Pay the price, move forward and don't look back.

              Sunny!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

"Some men give up their designs when they have almost reached the goal; While others, on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting, at the last moment, more vigorous efforts than ever before."
