  • Extended induction rocks

I believe this will complete my 19th week.It is so easy and wt loss is slow but consistent.Don't have a set wt goal but I suppose I can only lose 10 lbs, 15 max.Really only visible fat is vanishing love handles and a little pinch on lateral chestwall under my armpits.Ribs are becoming visible for 1st time in MANY tears. My hunger is controlled and lately I have been eating Bfast and dinner only. Not really hungry for lunch so I skip it.That is the great thing about keeping the carbs really low.Keeps insulin levels low thus hunger is controlled.Caloric intake must be in the 2000-2500 range but I can count on an average of 2 lbs lost each week. I have to admit I love the comments at work and social settings.Good luck to all, Phil

Since you are staying on induction until you hit your goal weight, what are you planning on doing carbwise after you hit goal?

Good for you that you're losing weight, Phil.

However, since we are following "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution" (2002) at ADBB, members should know that
      • doing Induction until you lose all your weight is not how Atkins should be done (DANDR 2002, Chapter 17, page 224)
      • one should not go more than six hours without having a meal or a snack (DANDR 2002, Chapter 4, page 46)
      • not eating vegetables is not Atkins, since even the Induction phase of Atkins requires three daily cups (DANDR 2002, Chapter 11, page 123)
      • weight loss is not the only principle behind Atkins; there are three more: good health, weight maintenance and disease prevention (DANDR 2002, Chapter 22, page 286)

So those who wish to gain all the health and weight loss benefits Dr. Atkins promised should follow the diet the way Dr. Atkins wrote it, not the way they believe can be done because someone managed to lose X lbs following his/her own version of Atkins. This is why at ADBB we recommend all members to read the book before starting the program and follow the plan the way Dr. Atkins designed it based on his experience with thousands of patients in over 30 years, not on one person's Y-week long trial.

        That's awesome, Phil! Grats man.

I just finished induction Tuesday, and am now on extended because of the amount of weight I need to lose. Will move into OWLs at 320'ish. Joined meetup.com, and going outside of my house to social events for the first time in 3 years.

Up at 2am cause I can't sleep. Too much energy. Life is good.
        What I do:
Elliptical gym machine 1 hr Tue-Sun
At 320, switch to cycling on my Trek 500
        2 filtered containers water/day
        Daily salads/veggies

        Goals:

Stop needing High Blood Pressure meds - DONE!
        Workout in a XXXL shirt
        - DONE!
        Workout in a XXL shirt
        Workout in a XL shirt
        270 on the scales

          Congrats Phil,
I am also doing extended. I am six weeks and going strong. When I lose over half of the weight I will move on. I agree though don't skip as your body will get used to you missing that meal. Even if you grab a cheese stick or a salad.

Thanks for the concerns. Why should I eat when I'm not hungry? Those actions were one of the factors that led to obesity.I eat only when I am hungry. My body is doing a good job of that.Sometimes I am hungry mid day, other times not.I eat a filling Bfast and same for evening meal.My caloric intake is more than enough to meet demands.I tried atkins before, followed it to the T, and after moving up the rung, hunger returned back.Like many others, I gained it all back.If I could control hunger with will power, I wouldn't be obese in the first place.Too old to yoyo diet again.YES, I have made modifications to Atkins diet.It is working very well for me and I have no plans to change. But again,I understand your views and appreciate your input.

Congratulations Phil. Glad things are working for you.
I can understand that you are a bit gun shy with that previous experience that you had. But is it possible that you did not do things right last time? That you did things too fast? For a carb sensitive person I would think adding carbs are still possible but you would have to do it slow and take one tiny step at the time.

I am very happy to know that things work so well for you but I too worry a bit a bout you. I worry that you are not getting all your nutrients. I worry that what you are doing is not sustainable. I worry that one day you will just give up and jump right back to carb loading again. We all want you to be healthy in the end and end up with an eating pattern that is sustainable. I am sure you want that too.
Sorry about worrying so much. Just want it to work for you in the long run too.

Phil, while I don't agree with your strategy (I foresee trouble in the long run), I must admit that you fascinate me.

Since you pretty much don't believe in carbs (even veggies), do you mind sharing what you typically eat for breakfast and dinner? Also... at the risk of TMI (too much information), I just have to ask - since you don't get any fiber, how do you *go potty*? (Sorry... I had to ask. Inquiring minds need to know.)

To everyone - I just want to make sure that you understand that my asking this does NOT imply that I endorse his interpretation of controlled-carb eating. I'm just nosey.

                BTW, congrats on your loss.

I skip breakfast. I just can't eat in the morning 99.99% of the time. Some times I don't eat for a couple days, I know it's bad. Ever since I was 13/14 years old ( 24 now ) I have had this problem where I am actually never hungry. I have to remind myself it's been a while. I try to remember throughout the day to at least eat something small but my memory has gone down hill since I had postpartum depression psychosis and post traumatic stress disorder from 2006- late 2008. Normal weight for me was 110 LBS at 5'3"... when I got pregnant in early 2006 I gained a TON of weight. I ended at 205. I'll fill you in with the problem with skipping meals....

Since I have had this eating problem since my early teen years, my body thinks I am ALWAYS in starvation mode. When I got pregnant I ONLY ate for the sake of my daughter. I ate breakfast lunch and dinner everyday weather I liked it or not. Every bit of food I put into my body my mind thought " YES FOOD, I'll store this away for later since I'm starving to death " and so it stored up all the food I ate. I still have this eating problem but I am trying to correct it through atkins... eating as much as a normal person should, but still lose the weight. Like I said I miss meals here and there but it's not really intentional due to my horrible memory. I honestly know how it feels to eat when your not hungry. You probably feel like you might as well of got done eating in an eating contest and went out for dinner right after. It's really hard to eat at a normal time like everyone else when you don't even feel hungry at all.

Just whatever you do, don't take it further than skipping lunch... it can mess you up like how it has messed me up. Since I know how it feels to force yourself to eat when your not hungry, I don't dare tell you to eat lunch anyway. It's so hard. Maybe find something small, really small, to snack on at lunch... cheese stick?

Thanks Jilliian. I eat when I am hungry, and only when I am hungry. Most of my life I ahve eaten the traditional three meals a day plus snacks. Finally have become in touch with my body to know when I am hungry or not.I contribute this to a low insulin level and a constant blood sugar. It takes 8-12 hours after a large meal before I become hungry. When the hunger comes, I make it top prioroty to eat right away.

Thats good then. My husband can eat and eat but never gain a single pound. He's also ALWAYS hungry and never moves from 170LBS. I can eat a large meal, and just like you said, I'll be good on eating darn near the rest of the day. I still feel like I just got done eating the meal 6+ hours later. As long as your not intentionally not eating it's good in my opinion. Which obviously you are not intentionally doing that.

I'm glad to see your success!
