  • So some extra 'foods' came to mind

Two things I've found that I think are really awesome are the Joe's Whole Ground flaxseed, which has per 2 TBSP I think 4 grams of carbs, and 4 grams of fiber- It's like five bucks at my local Warehouse Market.

Another thing I've been doing is making 'faux california sushi rolls' which is basically the seaweed nori with an ounce of cream cheese spread straight through the middle, sprinkled with half a cup of broccoli slaw (pick out the carrot if you must but it's probably two tiny little sprigs) and with half a chopped avocado down the middle. Fold, eat and enjoy. Tastes an awful lot like a california roll- haven't tried it with cauliflower 'rice' but I might soon.

The best thing about the seaweed is dependent on the brand it may be ALL fiber. So not only are you getting fiber and potassium from the avocado but fiber from the seaweed as well. Makes me excited to eat, and they taste good, too. Although you have to be careful what brand you get- not all seaweed nori is created the same. The first stuff I had in my cupboard was all fiber, but the next batch I bought had NO fiber and was two entire carbs for a whole wrap. So make sure you look at the label.

Another thing- for drinks, if I crave sweet stuff, at Dollar Generals they sell this stuff called 'Nevella' which is a sweetener just like Splenda- same ingredients, etc. Haven't tried it, but it's a lot cheaper. Anyway I buy the Lipton's decaf cold brew tea and mix some Nevella with it.

Anyway- anyone else have any really amazing, quirky ideas for stuff you've found outside of the 'norm?' I know there's already a LOT of recipe forums out there and recipe websites- but anything, I mean. What you drink, something you've come up with, etc.

When you choose to do "extended" Induction, all it means is that you are following the Induction Phase for longer than the initial 14 days. So you are still following the Induction Rules and still eating the foods listed on the Induction Acceptable Foods list.

So something like Nori seaweed isn't allowed on Induction, extended or otherwise, because it isn't on the Acceptable Foods List.

If you want to expand your menu, then move to OWL Phase.

Someone posted this a while back, since you like sushi, you might be interested:

      Scattered sushi low carb-style
Here's a link about scattered sushi: Making Sushi: Making Sushi: How to Make Scattered Sushi (Chirashi) | Quamut: the go to how to
I'm replacing the rice with "rice" made from grated cauliflower and yellow summer squash. And I don't use "seasoned rice vinegar" because the "seasoning" is salt and sugar. But instead, I toss the cauli with alittle rice vinegar, just until it's tart enough but not too tart. Instead of fish, I have shrimps and crab meat.

Re: So some extra 'foods' came to mind

Great idea, but I don't really like 'fish' style sushi. I've never been a big fan of fish since we live in the breadbasket. Frogs and crawdads, yeah, lol.

And not2late, I'm still sticking to every other induction rule- I feel like if it doesn't impact my GI (it actually has the opposite effect in every clinical trial I've looked up) and doesn't raise my carbohydrates beyond the 20 limit and it's still a vegetable and not a frankenfood then there's no reason NOT to have it and still be in induction. If the kind you get has minimal carbs and is made of complete fiber then it's a win-win situation altogether. I am aware that this forum sticks to the 2002 version of DANDR religiously but since Dr. Atkins has died he hasn't had a whole lot of time to revise. The world of vegetables is amazing and diverse and it stands to reason there would be a large amount of salad vegetables out there that do exactly as the other vegetables do.

The important thing is I'm still losing weight and the addition of it doesn't A. impede my weight loss B. elevate my blood sugar, in turn causing a craving and C. send me beyond my 20 carb threshold. So I feel like I'm safe.

Anyway, a link for seaweed's beneficial effect in clinical trial-

The page is in French/Spanish but the text of the article itself, including scientific references is in English.

Amazing stuff, really- and they hold your food together so well.

As I wrote: "Extended Induction" simply means you are choosing to follow the Induction Rules and eat off the List beyond the initial 14 days. It's not a separate Phase where you are allowed to pick and choose whatever food you want provided it doesn't interfere with your weight loss, push you over 20 net carbs, etc. Quite simply it's more Induction.

Alot of people have the idea that extending their Induction means they can do whatever they feels like doing as long as they don't exceed the magical 20 net carbs daily. That's not Induction Phase. And it's certainly not "Extended" Induction Phase.

If you want to add foods not on the Induction List, then move to OWL Phase.

PS: Nori seaweed was around when Dr. Atkins was alive. Sushi restaurants were very chic in Manhattan where Dr. A. lived. Yet, he choose not to put seaweed on the magical List.

True, but you can't pick only the Induction rules you like and still call it Induction. I mean, you can call it Induction if you wish, but it isn't Induction according to DANDR 2002. In any case, since you finished your 2-week Induction, it is perfectly fine to move to OWL. You do not need to increase your carb level beyond 20 g, nor do you have to add foods other than "extra" non-starchy vegetables for now. You can do OWL Rung 1 by simply adding additional veggies and sticking to <20 g net carbs, and you can do this for as long as you are satisfied with your OWL Rung 1 food choices.

Since you had already added Nori seaweed to your diet, you are technically in OWL Rung 1 as per DANDR 2002. Enjoy it and happy low carbing!

Nathan, no one is trying to be on you back. It's just that it is easier for those responding if your Ring is accurate, and more importantly, it is much less confusing to others still in Induction since they may eat things you are eating under the assumption that those food items are allowed on Induction after seeing Induction listed on your post. You may call you plan extended Induction and that's fine, but I am sure you don't mean to possibly undermine another Inductioneer's following the program.
