  • Counting Carbs

I've been on extended induction for some time now and my weight loss has pretty much stalled over the last several weeks. I think it's my body's way of telling me it's time to start re-introducing healthy carbs in the OWL phase.

Until this point, I've never sat down and officially counted my carbs each day, but I know it is crucial to keep close track of them in the coming phases.

Do the majority of you use FitDay? What others do you guys and gals use?

    Re: Counting Carbs

I generally used a notebook, with my trusty Dr. Atkins New Carbohydrate Gram Counter.

I had dial-up at the time, and using Fitday was painfully slow.

When we got DSL, I used Fitday to trouble shoot ... because by that time, I was pretty much done with the losing.

Fitday is good, though many find that having to figure net carbs on their own is "too much" ... All Things Food and Diet - FatSecret does allow you to show net carbs.

I think the best way is the way that works for you.

      Re: Counting Carbs

I love NutritionData. Love love love it. I've added the meals I eat regularly (my daily omelette and standard salad and snack, among others) as separate recipes, and each day I track is a separate recipe, as well. That way, my daily planning is as simple as throwing three or four recipes into my recipe for the day instead of having to add 20-30 different ingredients to each day. I'm also able to customize my caloric consumption, vitamin and mineral recommendations based upon my own stats (very nice, since a sedentary senior male and an active, pregnant female would have obviously different needs).

I use FitDay -- bought the program so I could customize it the way I wanted to and didn't have all the pop-up ads for food and other diet sites.....I couldn't have started without knowing exactly how many carbs I was eating daily -- I have tried to stay as close to the top of the amount of carbs I was allowed on whatever Rung I've been on so I was eating the best variety of foods available.

Glad you've decided to move on to OWL -- you'll enjoy more variety and should start loosing again soon. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll give FitDay a try and see how it goes. I'm going to stay where I'm at as far as extended induction goes, to see how many carbs I'm currently averaging.

Don't overstay your welcome on Induction.

The 2nd phase is called "Ongoing Weight Loss" for a reason.

              Re: Counting Carbs

I quit counting carbs a couple months back. I felt that I was getting too anal about it and getting frustrated when I would stall and such. So now, I pretty much eat the same stuff every day. 3 eggs plus, peppers and either sausage or chicken with shredded cheese. At lunch I would have 1 to 2 chicken breasts with shredded cheese and sometimes I'd have a salad. I'd buy those pre-shredded salad bags and use Newman's or Ken's low carb or no carb Caesar's dressing. I'd top the salad off with some Bacos. For dinner, I'd have more chicken or a beef sirloin patty (or turkey patty) and another salad, or just eat the meat. Sometimes I'd have more eggs, or just eat some Brown and Serve sausages. Did you know Brown and Serve sausages are only 2 net carbs for 3 links? Yum.

Also, I make sure that I drink plent of water. I'm probably not getting as much as I should, but I make sure that I'm hydrated. The days I don't drink enough water, I'd retain weight, but days I drank upwards of 2 liters of water, well, the weight would come right off.

Oh yeah, Fitday. I still use it to track my weight. I also use Google calendar to mark my weight and my goals, too. I had bought a program called ProTrack 2008, which in my opinion is far better than FitDay PC. You could also download workout exercises from their site for free. This program was abound $20. Works like Fitday, but better. The only thing it's really missing is the ability to add your picture, but you could always export your reports to Excel and use Excel to add a picture to the report.

                Bacos
Not acceptable during Induction (and personally I wouldn't eat it at all). The ingredients are textured low-fat soy flour, salt, natural flavorings, non-gmo caramel color.

Did you know Brown and Serve sausages are only 2 net carbs for 3 links?
One still needs to check the ingredients though.

The free version of FitDay shows total carbohydrate in grams with dietary fiber broken out in grams below it if one is viewing the calories tab at the bottom of their food log page.

I use FitDay to figure out an entire recipe's nutrition info and a day's food if I am monitoring/checking where my calorie count is at. Otherwise I use the gram counter, USDA and FitDay to get the nutrition info and log it in on the Notepad document I use to journal my food intake.

That's fine you want to chastise me, but I'm losing weight at the rate of 2 lbs every 4 days.

Not chastising you. I am pointing out the correct way to follow Induction. If you don't want to follow Induction correctly, that's your problem. I don't really care since it does not affect me. All I can do is give advice... either for you or for other members reading this thread. It doesn't mean you need to take it.

extended induction shouldn't be treated as the same as the 14 day induction, IMO
Your opinion differs from Dr. Atkins' though. Soy flour is not allowed in Induction, "extended" or not.

I'm quite sure you're eating food with Splenda, Aspertame or other artificial sweetners
You don't really know what I eat...

that's not good for you, either.
If you believe they are bad for you, you can choose not to consume them. They are certainly not required in your diet.

And besides, I do know what you eat. You're a by the book Aktineer... all one has to do is read the book to know exactly what you eat!

As I have said, just because some foods/products are "acceptable" (e.g. artificial sweeteners) it does not mean one is required to eat them. So you don't know "exactly" what I am eating. All you know is what options I have.

How are you going to add 5 net carbs during OWL?

How will you know what your CCLL is?

Of course, if you count or not doesn't matter to anyone but you! This is your journey, and you can do it anyway you want.

Just as Georgiana pointed out, what you eat only matters to you.

Seriously, as a magna cum chubby graduate of the "I will customize any diet and do it my way" program, it is because of the no nonsense advice of posters like Georgiana and ADBB in general that is the reason that I am successful this time in my weight loss efforts.
