Is chicken breast or thigh good for Dr. Atkins diet?

  • Is chicken breast or thigh good for Dr. Atkins diet?

    I have checked the low carb recipe site http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/chicken_recipes.html and all the ones I looked have suggested using chicken breast. But chicken thigh fillet has more fat than breast fillet and Dr. Atkins suggested to eat chicken with skin on and so on.
    Can someone shed some light on this question? Is chicken breast or chicken thigh good for Dr. Atkins diet?

    Yes.

    Substituting one for the other may work in a recipe or it may not.

      I use all parts of the chicken, depending on the recipe. Sometimes breasts work better than thighs. I also love the drumsticks (they make a great portable meal or snack) and LOVE chicken wings.

      So, all parts of the chicken work with Atkins WOE (even chicken livers). Skin on or off works too according to the recipe and/or personal preferences.

        Yes! Of course you can eat Chicken Breast or Chicken Thigh!
        I had a Chicken Breast for dinner myself!

          Thank you for your prompt responses. It was mentioned elsewhere in the forum that we need to eat high fat-moderate protein-low carbohydrate. Majority of the calories should come from fat. I have been eating fatty parts of meat or chicken and in fact I even ask the butcher to add some extra fat.

          So I can be a bit relaxed on the breast fillets which are good on some recipes. I am on the end of fourth of induction and willing to go on extended induction for next 6 months as I have to lose 138 lbs.

            That might backfire on you though.

            Many people who stay on a long Induction don't end up being successful, because when the inevitable stall happens, they become too afraid to do what they should have done earlier ... move to OWL.

            Remember that OWL = Ongoing Weight Loss and is the phase where you should lose MOST of your weight.

            Induction is about getting your body ready to lose ... the losing happens on OWL, not Induction.

            Please check Chapters 12 and 13 very carefully before you commit to something that may not help you in the long run.

              Another thought on lean vs. fatty cuts of protein...when using leans (chicken/turkey breast, white fishes, pork tenderloin, etc.) you can either add fats while cooking or serve with a tasty sauce (hollandaise, bernaise, etc.). OR sometimes with a grilled lean protein I'll add fats (butter, sauces, etc.) to the veggies served with the meal.

              It all makes for tasty Atkins cuisine. Low fat dieting never tasted this good!!

                I prefer chicken breast but that's my personal preference. I use other parts of chicken for many recipes - it's pretty much up to you which ones you want to eat. Also remember, turkey can be used for any of the chicken recipes!

                  As far as I'm concerned, any cut of chicken is perfectly acceptable in any recipe and in any phase of the Atkins plan.
