  • Has anyone tried the fat fast? Advice?

I've been on Atkins most of the past year. I lost maybe six pounds the first two weeks, and then maybe two or three over the course of the next month and a half. At that point I gave up caffeine entirely, and lost another twenty in the next 6 weeks. It was great.

At that point, I wound up at an on site job location for several months, where eating on campus was the only option, and a low carb lifestyle was at odds with the chef's preference. I gained fourteen pounds back over the course of the few months I was there. Once I returned home, I maintained a basically low carb lifestyle although I wasn't really focused on losing weight.

In the middle February, I went back on Induction full time and since then have lost seven pounds. I thought maybe I was cheating and not realizing it so, I dug out my book and for the past two weeks, made sure my diet was impeccable. No caffeine, no soda, less than four ounces of cheese, two cups salad sprrinkled through out the day with an awareness towards the salad dressing, 1 cup allowed veggies and then meat and eggs. I haven't eaten any protein bars (even Atkins Advantage), low carb candy or even low carb ice cream. I walk at least an hour a day with at a 15 minutes per mile clip. I've realized, when following the book letter perfect, that I'd actually been doing quite well for the past several weeks. Anyway, being meticulous for two weeks, I've only lost 1 and 1/2 pounds.

I don't think it's plateau because I've realized that I've spent most of the last year (with the exception of when I wasn't at home) eating almost entirely in this manner. Being completely conscious of what I put in my mouth hasn't changed my eating patterns. Other than a very occasional glass of Diet Slice or Rye Crisp with Laura Scudders peanut butter, nothing else has changed. And the infrequency with which I had those - once every three or four weeks, certainly couldn't have hindered weight loss that severely.

The lipo strips virtually never move out of the "trace category" regardless of how meticulous I am - although they are almost always there. They've registered "medium" only once in the past year, and "small" maybe a half dozen times.

Anyway, I re-read Atkins this morming and I thought I'd try the fat fast and just see what happens. I like being on Atkins, and even if I don't lose weight, I just feel so much better. But I have a wardrobe full of really fabulous clothes that I'd love to wear and I find myself avoiding business meetings because I'm self-conscious - and that is costing me money.

Any feedback or experience you have is appreciated.

I say no way on the fat fast. You have been able to lose weight on this WOE. Move on to OWL and see how things go there.

I have yet to read someone who has had real success with the fat fast...several have tried it but I haven't come across any follow up reports...have you ever had your menu analyzed by one of the experts here?

Fat Fast is only for the people who are metabolically resistant to weight loss. Your loss shows you aren't.

Post a couple of menues in the review my menu section.

And have the folks in the Exercise forum critique your exercise routine.

No, I haven't. But other than those few months, I work at home and have total control. I follow the book pretty meticulously - that was the point of the past two weeks. I wanted to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes that I was unaware of.

I get up, have two eggs with a slice of cheddar, sometimes with a little bit of ham or sausage (yes, I check carb content and avoid nitrites). I have a small salad for lunch with a chicken breast or tuna with mayonnaise - that kind of thing. Usually a little more salad later in the afternoon so I don't accidently eat to many carbs at once. And then your basic atkins dinner - meat with a cup of veggies and occasionally an Atkins approved desert. That's pretty much it. I have good variety of meats and veggies and eat a fair amount of fish. I avoid caffeine and soda and drink eight glasses of water a day.

Before I go to bed, i'll frequently have a few more bites of chicken or tuna, or whatever protein is at hand.

Because I work at home, I try and avoid having even Atkins approved food around that's too tasty. It's way to easy too walk to the kitchen and munch. So I keep satisfying but relatively bland food on hand so that over eating isn't a problem.

As far as the eating goes, I'm fine. I'm happy and content and could eat like this forever. What I'm not happy about is my weight and I'm just not sure what to do next.

As for exercise, I walk one to two hours per day, at a fifteen minutes per mile clip.

what kinds of Atkins approved desserts...even if you think you were eating perfect...by giving an accurate and detailed menu helps the experts pick out trouble areas you may not see...the problem I see is that sometimes when you list something you say "a little bit of this..." You shouldn't be eating just a little of this a little of that. If you are not eating enough fats/cals/carbs it can stall your loss. I know you have a busy schedule but have you tried punching in a days menu into fitday.com?

LOL - I had no idea what he was talking about

so ignored him. Thanks for the heads up.

I didn't know about fit.com so I'll check it out. I did post a complete breakdown in the review my menu section...so we'll see.

Atkins approved desserts are like, sugar free jello or a little whipped cream with Splenda - that sort of thing. But even that I avoid because I don't want to accidently go overboard. Since I don't crave sweets usually, it's not a problem for me.

                      I'm 50 and 5"3.

My highpoint was a year and month ago, at 228. I got down to 200 before I had to leave and gained 13 pounds on location. I'm now back down to 205. I'd very much like to get back to 122.

Your menu looked pretty good...Isabeau made a couple of suggestions...here are mine...try alternating your exercise routine...sometimes your body gets into a rut and throwing in some other forms of cardio can kick start your metabolism...try dropping the cheese...I noticed that some people(me included) stall or have a slowdown in weight loss because of the cheese...some people are more sensitive to it than others...may not be the problem but you might want to experiment with it...try adding some protein to your lunches...a piece of chicken or fish...no more occasional rye crisps and peanut butter also...make sure to take your vitamins...try drinking green tea...it has been known to act as a thermogenic...2big has posted about it in the past...and also...how much water are you drinking?

I am fairly new this way of eating, but I just read in the book that some folks have stalls because of yeast. There is a whole section devoted to it in the book. Could you maybe have problems with this and arent aware? There is also a forum here on this website that addresses this. Thought I would mention this, because it sure caught my attention since I have been pron to yeast infections alot thru out my life and it makes sense that it could hinder your weight loss.

have you seen your doctor for a check up to be sure you don't have a medical reason for your stall as he points out in chapters 15 and 20?

BTW you don't want a protein snack on Atkins you want a fat snack as fats drive the Atkins ketogenic weightloss program not proteins. A protein snack will in effect fix your hungry by raising your blood sugars stopping your fat burning till those sugars are dealt with. That is why Dr Atkins tells us not to do our Atkins too high protein or too low fat. eggs are great Atkins ratio snacks.
