  • Im absolutely gutted :-(

I have been good keeping to my % on fit day, eating all my veg, drinking all my water etc etc well so I thought.

Ive been having Hellmas mayo which I love. I have having the Hellmans mayo with garlic. Guess what, Ive just checked the label and it contains sugar. I am sooooo mad I just assumed it was OK. I am so gutted

Well, that's ok. Now you know, and you can use regular Hellman's. Everybody makes mistakes. And the takeaway lesson from this is - read the labels!

    Mini goal 1: 180 1/23/2010 2: 170 4/25/2010 , 3: 160, 4: 150, 5: 140 Final Goal: 125

I think regular Hellmann's mayo also has sugar. Most people are fine with the small amount of sugar in mayo.

        I also know exceptions though.

Where does sugar come in the list of ingredients?

Is there only the one sugar?

                Hi Sandra,

If you can get to a Sainsbury they are selling a sugar free brand called "Delouis Fils" I think Waitrose also sell it in the bottled & a fresh version.

Ingredients as follows:- Sunflower oil, egg yolk, dijon mustard(mustard, vinegar, water, salt) Vinegar, salt & lemon..in that order.

It is very yummy but does have a very different flavour to Hellmans.

                Hope that helps

                  Re: Im absolutely gutted :-(

A reasonable rule of thumb is that if sugar is NOT one of the first 4 ingredients, and if the net carb count is 2 or less per serving, then the item should be fine.

Some things I will simply not have ... corn syrup, HFCS ... regardless of how far down it comes.

Some people are more sensitive to sugar and do want sugar free mayonnaise.

                  Your Mileage May Vary.

Is a rule of thumb that you consider for most all foods? I am just asking because my mom is also on this woe and is struggling because she won't buy anything that has sugar in it. Not because it affects her, but because she is assuming that anything with sugar is not allowed. (even if it says zero carbs on it)

                      Re: Im absolutely gutted :-(

Thanks for all your replies. I do feel a little better now. I have checked out Sainsburys website and have found the sugar free mayo, which of course Im buying today.

I did try making my own but it was, not so good, to put it politely lol Im going to have another go though. Everyone says how good homemade mayo is, and at least you know what goes into it.

                      Thanks again.

If you have a hand blender, there's an easy recipe here:

                        Homemade Mayo – Minute-made delicious:days

You can use the same recipe even without a hand blender, but it will take a little longer.

She is perfectly correct. Dr Atkins said we should not use dressings 'with added sugar'.

However many people either assume or have discovered through trial and experiment that a small amount of added sugar does not afect their losing efforts.

Personally I do not buy foods with sugar listed unless the number of carbs per 100 grams/mls is less than one. Hellmans fullfat mayo in UK has 1.5 carbs for 100grams making it 0.21 carbs per tablespoon.

However in USA they can list zero carbs for a very small serving if it has less than 0.5 carbs in it, so eating a few tablespoons of a dressing that has a zero listing for one teaspoon might mean you were eating several carbs!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

We have Hellmans Mayo imported from the US, but relabeled for the nutritional authorities in this country and it lists 1 gm of carbs/100gm and 0.13gm of carbs per Tbsp (13gm). the jar i'm quoting from is imported from Unilever Chicago.

i also have a jar of Hellman's mayo that DH brought back from the US (where it is less than half price of whAt i pay abroad) and the ingredients are exactly the same, in the same order but the nutritionAls are rounded down and our heAlth ministry doesn't allow for that. 0.13gm/Tbsp is fine 4 me and it is Also the lowest carb mayo that i can buy in this part of the world it doesn't trigger cravings (4 me) and the sugar is minimAl.
