Yea, I have gone thru 4 different medications before settling on Nexium as the best choice. After being on it for several years though it doesn't work as good as it used to so now I take that every morning and the Prescription Zantac 300 at nite.

Everyone is different in what works for them. Mine had progressed to Barretts before anyone diagnosed me correctly, I slept sitting up for most of 15 years because they kept telling me it was just stress! Now I have 7 ulcers in my esophogus and have to have biopsy's every 6 months to check for cancer!

Whatever you do, don't go off your meds just because you feel better unless your doctor tells you to. Sometimes the lack of pain is what gets you into trouble! Once it has turned your esophogus cells into pre cancerous cells (Barrett's) you may no longer feel the intense pain like before and think its getting better...it may in reality this is a bad thing.
So please don't take anyone's advice on this board, talk with your doctor and do what he/she recommends. :yes

Dr. A thought the carb restriction was most likely the reason Atkins WOLifers experience reduced or cured acid reflux.

An excerpt from Larry King Live interview with Dr. A in 2003:

CALLER: Before I started your diet, I used to have to take heartburn and acid reflux medication every night. But once I started your diet, I no longer had to take that. Does your diet have anything to do with me not having the heartburn and the acid reflux any longer?

ATKINS: Oh, that's very, very common. Of course it has to do with that. There's no question if you went off the diet, you would get your heartburn again.

        KING: Because?

ATKINS: We don't know why but we assume there is something in carbohydrate that would aggravate the stomach function. Because that's the one thing that's restricted.

Oh no, I will not be going off my medication unless my doctor advised me to do so. I just meant that with the elimination of the main culprits of my reflux thanks to this diet, my symptoms hopefully will go away for good. In fact, they have improved a lot. I still get the occasional flare-up, but that is due to my eating something spicy usually. My doctor does not believe in sugar coating anything and explained fully what could happen if this disease is not monitored dealt with correctly. When he brought up the word ulcer I did not really get nervous, then the word cancer came up and he had my full attention.

I hope you heal quickly and completely, MotherofGizmo.

          Thanks, guys!
